Question about MMR

I thought that if your MMR was higher than your rank, you were supposed to gain more LP than you lose? At least, I remember reading this somewhere. Can anyone set me straight on the facts?

The higher your MMR the higher your opponents will also be on average. If you play against harder opponents (have higher MMR than you) then you get more LP and lose less because you are expected to lose. Works also the other way around.

Your MMR > enemy MMR -> Win less LP on win, lose more LP on defeat. Your MMR < enemy MMR -> Win more/lose less

The other answer is correct, but it's probably worth adding a reminder that people don't know their mmr and op.gg and similar are only estimates of mmr. Every now and then people will be all "Aha, the system is broken and doesn't work like that! See, my mmr is normal according to op.gg, but I got low LP gains!", but really it's just their mmr is low and op.gg just overestimated their mmr.
