Bard. He FEELS useless. (long-ish message)

So many champions have a "mission" they try and achieve through-out a game, and if they do well the can see it reflected in their characters stats. For Nasus it's Q stacks, If hes ahead there hes Q does tons of damage. For Cass it's poison stacks, if shes getting lots of stacks she gets AP. For an ADCs its farm/gold, they get items and see that the get lots of damage. (Everyone scales with gold, just not as hard as ADCs) supports get heals/shields/speed/poke/ect Pretty much EVERY champ in the game is like this, if they do well the become more powerful.

Except Bard.

If he gets gold its not like he has any good scales, and shouldn't be buying damage. His heal isn't big enough to bother buying AP, same with Q damage. Hes never focused so tanky-ness doesn't help a whole lot. Getting 40% CDR with good runes its easy, and can be done quickly ahead behind or not.

Random guy: "But he has his passive! thats like a whole system build around how well he roams that gives him stats!"

False. Chimes appear at a constant speed regardless of what Bard is doing, and as long as he isn't COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT he will get almost all of them at mid game when people are going all over the place team fighting and pushing. Even if he almost ignores them early game.

Bard gets no reward for doing well.

Also, hes just weak. His CC isn't great and his damage is amongst the worst in the game, and his heal is almost the weakest heal, unless he lets it sit for a while. His ult and E are great if used right, but are VERY hard to use in an advantageous way. (His ult is arguably the hardest skill in the game) Not only are they hard to use right but if you mess up, they can really hurt your team. For example, lets take a scenario. You have a sona who's been doing quite well, (shes 3/1/14). You get into a fight and she completely messes up her ult, and another skill. You still have a good chance at winning that fight, since shes ahead. Now you have a 3/1/14 Bard . Hes messes up his ult and E. The fight might as well have been 4v6. It would have been better Bard wasn't even there. Heck if he had been 20/0/20 the same would still hold true.

So I've thought up a few ideas that I think would work well. But these are just random ideas, I assume Riot could do much better, if they realized the state hes in.

Reward for doing well

His passive. This should be what separates the good Bards from the great. A great bad should easily get 2 or 3 times as many chimes as a bad Bard , just like a Nasus or Veigar would get 2 or 3 times as many Q stacks.

Idea #1, Roaming Bard : Change his passive so that chimes appear as he goes places, so that a Bard the is roaming will keep getting chimes to appear, as where a Bard that stays in lane will have far less appear.

Idea #2, Meep Bard : Hitting with meeps make chimes appear faster. This way keeping track of when to your meeps are up gets you more chimes. Make hitting champs make chimes spawn even faster. and hitting multiple champs with 1 meep (via the AoE) would be even better. For example, hitting anything: 1 second off of next chime spawn. Hitting a champion: 5 seconds off of next chime spawn. Hitting more than 1 champion: instant chime spawn for each champ hit beyond the first.

Idea #3, Balanced: Simply make chimes spawn faster. BUT make them disappear with time (make it about 3 or 4 minutes) So Bard has to chose weather to get more chimes or help his lane. Good Bards would time roams right to get chimes AND help lanes.

Scaling and less team-neutral abilities His ult is odd, and would be hard to give balanced scaling to. Only one I can think of is improved travel speed or range. I would just leave his ult alone.

But you could give scaling to his E

**Take away the bonus travel speed to allies, and make going thought the portal give a buff. Ethereal residue: Allies In the portal gain 22%/24%/26%/28%/30%(+0.03) move speed, and heal 10/15/20/25/30 (+0.2 AP) every second, this effect lasts for 2 seconds after they leave the portal (Only works first time through the portal). Enemies get the same effect, but are slowed and take magic damage instead. ** Just a random Idea, again I'm sure there are better ideas I'm just throwing some out there. But the point still stands. Bard needs a way to get rewarded. And some scaling.

TL;DR Bard doesn't get rewarded for playing well, and has almost no scaling. Also his abilities are barely any better to his team than they are to his enemies. Changing chime mechanics and giving "E" a scale would probably help.

IF you value a champion's worth based soley on how much damage they can do then you shouldn't be playing bard. Bard's strength is pure utility. As such, Movement speed is essential and he scales very well through that. Being able to zip around team fights, stun, set up engages, disengages, roam etc. Late late game, his meeps scale enough to do damage as well as a large amount of cc, so I don't understand why people have a problem with him. A TWO SECOND DOUBLE STUN PEOPLE! ON A FOUR SECOND COOL DOWN DO YOU NOT SEE HOW POWERFUL THAT IS??

I really actually hate his teamfighting. If he sets it up so that he can make a really good use of his E and/or engage well with his ult and/or have healing shrines already set up, then he's acceptable. If fights don't happen completely on his terms, he can easily contribute almost nothing to a teamfight. Even if he's viewed with no regard to his damage potential, he still has a lot of failings.

NAMI BUBBLE IS A 5-MAN STUN ON A 6 SECOND COOLDOWN THOUGH! HOW CAN BARD COMPETE?!?!

He's not going to get every double stun, it's not an amazingly long stun, and it's the only non-ult ability he has that really affects combat once the fighting has already started (that mediocre heal barely counts). It's a pretty nice ability, but it can't cover all of his weaknesses. It also has pretty mediocre damage, and that is a pretty significant weakness when compared to some other supports who bring utility and damage.

There is a lot more to a champion than damage, which is all you seem to think matters. Bard has a ton of potential for setting up plays. Once I get mobility boots and my sightstone I'm usually roaming mid every time our lane is pushed up because he does it so quickly. You can get a lot of good angles for ganks on mid or the enemy jungle by using your E. People that are saying his Q is 'impossible' to get stuns on have no idea what they're doing. You hit the meep slow, the Q is extremely easy to stun off of.

The biggest bullshit complaint I'm seeing is 'If Bard messes up his ult then x". I've had maybe two 'bad' ults so far. If you use his ult intelligently you won't fail it. Even if you snag a teammate with the enemy, you get a free Q stun when the enemy leaves stasis and your teammate can mop them up. People just need to start trying to find the good synergies for him. My duo partner and I love the Jinx / Bard lane. When I have my ult, kills are essentially free. If they don't flash the ult, they will get stasis into Jinx traps into Bard stun then they're usually dead.

Your E change is extremely broken by the way. The ability is fine as it functions now, it offers an insane amount of gank potential that you can use all over the map as well as being a situational escape. Before you argue that, the reason allies move faster through the portal is so you can throw the Q backwards as you exit if the enemy follows you and you'll get the stun 99% of the time.

You can build him several ways. Build him like a traditional support if you want with Mikael's. Build him like I do if you want with utility actives. item 3092 item 3023 are both great to use on him as they give you even more catch potential on enemies. Throw in aegis or frozen heart as well.

TL:DR : Bard is kind of like a Janna. He doesn't offer damage to your team, he offers a ton of utility. People need to give it time to get used to him. His playstyle is a lot different than most supports and people need to learn when to roam and when not to.

Well but janna is the best supp in the game . and building ap on her helps a lot. But I think his q scaling should be increased . his ult should change to how leoonas ult is . does what it does now if in a. Certain aoe then outside that a slow. His ult is more or less meant for drag and baron

They're increasing the scaling on Q for you. I'm indifferent on it, it's not really it's purpose so I don't care. As for his ult, the only thing I would change is to have it hit instantly if he's within the drop point. This would give him the ability to make a reactionary play with it on something like a Vi ult. I've used his ult a couple of times for dragon / baron, but I usually use it as a long ranged catch tool. It has great range and a large radius so you can snag out of position enemies fairly easily.

All I'm saying is they need to be careful with him. He's already good if you know what you're doing. Most people haven't had the time to figure him out. This happened with Yasuo and look how he turned out a month later.

I never said He needed damage. I said he needed scaling, a reward for performing well. And scaling, not necessarily damage scaling.

They should honestly just take his chime count and have it enhance his other abilities. It would play more into his collection of them. Maybe have it increase the speed or range of Q slightly at certain break points, ramp up the movespeed bonus on W, increase the speed allies travel through E / slow down enemies more, and not so sure about it changing his ult without getting too weird. Not necessarily these things, I would just like to see his chimes have an influence on the rest of his kit.
