Emotes should cost IP...

I was so disappointed when i logged in and all the emotes cost 350 RP! Just why though?

Why never let free2play players enjoy something new? Why can't we purchase them for IP aswell?

make it cost 1000 ip or more i dont care as long as i can buy them without spending money on the game....

Maybe not 1000 IP, it's very low... But holy shit 2.50€ for a damn emote? And it's also DISCOUNTED?

I wonder who's going to spend 5€ for an emote that people can also disable, lol.

I own all champs and am i sitting on 30k IP so any amount would be freaking useful to buy anything with it.

AidanWR6 votes

I'm sitting on 80k ip, and there is literally nothing to buy with it except champion shards, and even those don't need to be bought very often. Yes, they will open up the emotes with the blue essence shop, at least that's the impression i got, but still, there's nothing to buy with IP once you get all the champions, especially with the runes rework coming out [slayer-jinx-unamused]

Tbh i havent logged on yet but this is disapointing i thought emotes were going to be the new ip/be sink come season 8 since we wont be able to buy bullshit runes well never use.

CPTSlapahoë29 votes

Lol, you thought riot cared about you. funny.

Warlord Scrap6 votes

But hey really do need to have a long term goal or the playerbase will fade that basic business and a reason that wow started to decline. They need to keep the hardcore players to give newer players a level to aspire to reach.

i miss summoner icons costing ip, now we have to pay money for them all and we dont even get to use them because of thes stupid missions

Loaded boards just to complain about this, so satisfied when it was top post on the page.

Unfortunately, they built themselves off of pay-to-dress and if they back down now, they'll be running money out the front door.

The tragic truth of this is that they have to or they'd be missing the opportunity.

Nonetheless, it would be nice if F2P got a bit.

When I first heard they were going to be 350 at a discount I laughed and now that I see they haven't changed I am just disappointed. Shame on anyone that buys these emotes. This in turn enables Riot and gives them the ability to create more needlessly expensive items. Riot, I love you guys but holy fuck I refuse to spend money on something that is overpriced.

DrCyanide14 votes

This feels like the when Chromas first came out. Everyone laughed at Riot trying to sell recolors that people at home could do in 5 minutes for RP, and said "no thanks," then Riot had to come out with the IP sale and better Chromas.

Zex13 votes

Remember way back then icons were IP? Hahaha...

at least they implemented Hextech crafting so you can get some skins for free...even that though. I don't get many key fragments to even take full advantage of the hextech crafting.

mikemcparty6 votes

Ugh, can we trade? I have like 12 keys and don't have the crates to open them. I don't play many champs :/

Whiteeye Avelyn5 votes

Laughs in 16 crates, im thinking about just buying keys to open these by this point. This is Tf2 all over again

I was so disappointed too because they are meant to show self expression, kinda like mastery or the taunt, the taunt is free, the mastery is free, why not emotes?

I understand some cost RP but all of them? Holy shit, we won't be able to answer our friends or enemies with emotes while they do!

iBelatucadros9 votes

i feel bad for the people who actually spend money on emotes, like, so sad*[sg-ahri-3]*

You would think that them being this good at making RP sinks they would have made at least a couple of decent IP ones as well ?

A Bad Nasus7 votes

College tuition should cost ip.

Ryze100thRework6 votes

No they shouldn't. People are wanting everything for free, completely forgetting that Riot Games Inc. is a company with an ultimate goal of making profit. If you are too blind to see that, then go ahead. No one is forcing you to buy them, it doesn't affect gameplay in any shape or form and it certainly shouldn't annoy you since you can disable them if you don't like them.

A Naughty Kitten6 votes

You're correct in that Riot's main goal as a business is to make money, but its painfully obvious that selling an emote for roughly $3.30~ USD each is not how they're going to do it. The whole purpose of emotes is to show them off to other people, and the idea around it is similar to the Sprays in games like Overwatch or HotS; Because they can be turned off at any time by any of the other players, it severely lowers how much bang for your buck you get out of the emote. Compare it with Skins. If you dislike a skin for whatever reason, if another player uses it in game, its not like you can toggle it off. Also consider all the times Riot has gone out and said they know that older players with mountains of IP need more ways to get rid of it. At present the only things you can spend it on are new Champions, Runes, and Mystery Champion Shards and 2 out of those 3 will be retired in early November when the preseason changes come out.

Skins are different to me because I do not buy them to show off, but because I myself enjoy them. It's not used as a communication tool, but just a small visual upgrade. If other players could turn my skins off, I would still buy them, because they look nice to me personally.

Emotes on the other hand are specifically made to be a communication tool. They have no other use - which is the main reason they lower in value if people just turn them off (like I will). It's like buying a megaphone in a crowd of deaf people.

Leonerdo2 votes

I don't think it's that different that spending 3$ extra on any kind of "over-priced" merch that people get just to show off their appreciation for a thing. Or spending any money at all for posters that you hang on your walls. Like no one needs them, but they look nice, and people like to express themselves.

And keep in mind that you can use emotes on any champion, and you can equip 5 at a time, compared to skins which only work when you are playing a certain champ and which you can only wear one of at a time. If you buy 5 emotes, you can use all 5 in every game; if you buy 5 skins, you are wasting at least 4 of them per game.

So overall, I don't think the price for these emotes breaks any kind of expectation or tradition at all. Of course, anyone who thinks they are cartoony/dumb won't buy them. But the people who do like them shouldn't have a problem spending 3-4$ on one (roughly the cost of 2 bumper stickers).

SpaghettiVase3 votes

But you also forget that they can be muted by the enemy team and your own. I imagine this has happened a lot already. People can't disable your skin, they can't disable your ward skin, they can't disable your icons even, yet this other cosmetic thing is costing more than an icon, and can be practically pointless since they are already going to be perma muted by a large group of people.

GrReaper966 votes

I think instead Rito should give out emotes during events instead of summoner icons. That way we wont feel so bad witht he "equipping" mission since we can still choose another 4 and emotes feel much better as a reward than icons

DarkRitual6 votes

Basic Emotes should cost IP (BE after the conversion). Esports emotes should cost RP (helps teams and event prize pools). Special event emotes should be quest unlocks.

Emotes from past events should be available now to anyone who has the appropriate icon in their inventory.

Add me to the list of disappointed people. I got really excited when I heard League will have actual emotes but not only you can't buy them with IP or get them from loot, they even cost more than SUMMONER ICONS . I'd be happy if we could at least buy them like chromas or when the whole -Turn IP into BE- comes. But that probably won't happen because we have to be happy with the loot system and not item 3151 about stuff like this.

Well, Rito is projected to make $1.6 billion this year. That's $1600000000. Quite a bit of money off of skins, ward skins, and icons. Yeah you can buy champs with money, but that's not the primary way to do it. I mean high level players might buy rune pages, so you have that.

With this in mind, how do you get users to adopt the emote system? Most players aren't gonna spend the money they could on a sale priced skin just to get an emote. I for one do spend real money to buy skins on occasion, but a few dollars here and there for a nice skin is one thing. But spending $3 for an emote which can be muted is quite a bit of money. It would make sense if it was only 50 RP, but that's not what they had in mind. Ultimately, I think if you want people to adopt emotes you don't want to make them choose between a nice skin or a few emotes. As of Nov 7. emotes will cost as much as a legendary skin! That's way too much.

Anyway, although I like seeing the emotes, they really do seem like a free feature to me, as do many others here from what I gathered. Ultimately, I don't think I'll be seeing anyone using emotes all too often.

I'm hoping Rito makes them free in the near future, and judging by the fanbase's reaction, they might do so in an upcoming patch, hopefully.

id be fine with even 5k ip for one...

but rp should be for skins

I log into the boards and see a bunch of threads talking emotes and I'm like, "O cool emotes, that's nice." And then I see the price tag and I just laugh like, "Yeah, right"

Now League of Legends looks to me like an other "Money Making" game/company. I mean I understand why they do it.... And why they need money... But I m really curious to know if the money is well spent.... if that "money need" is really needed.

One of the richest companies in game development atm with a very low number of employees. I rlly hate these ppl saying "but riot also needs money" Dude, they are fckign rich. [sg-shisa]

I think emotes should have a dual cost. The RP cost for me is fine- after the runes changes Riot is going to be losing a lot of money (potentially). I love Riot games and I want them to stay strong. Purchasing an aesthetic element to the game that DOESN'T affect game-play is my way of showing support to a game I love ^.^ That being said, I'm a broke asf college student. If there was an option to purchase emotes for 100,000 IP / Blue essence I'd also love that :D

BushidoBlade4 votes

This discussion should have been, Why are there a lack of options to spend IP or blue essence? While Riot games monetizes yet another digital product, they are simultaneously ignoring their community's request for a use for their IP. They produced something that would be perfect for the task yet chose to charge us RP for some emoticons. How can you really be satisfied with Riot's decision here?

ModAttysu The Poro4 votes

Emotes are just... not my thing TBH. I know the price especially puts me off because I could be collecting skins and stuff with it, and I'm a broke high school student, but I can also see why people WOULD buy the emotes immediately. [sg-zephyr]

N l T E4 votes

Talk about penny pinching... Emotes are far less complicated to make than skins yet they're going to be more expensive than chromas, which will be switching to the new blue essence currency once preseason hits. So depressing that it seems like they're not going to follow the same system...

the way you make a game free to play is with advertisements or flair that doesn't effect the game.

the game isn't free to create or maintain so they have to generate revenue somehow.

are you okay with that?

ChuShoe3 votes

Yeah but league is trying to rush a trinity force so.

seasaltcake3 votes

And this is on sale too, they just aren't worth it at full price.

Emelie Cauchemar3 votes

I wonder if this is going to be a repeat of chromas where a player shows a video of just how much "effort" it takes to make a chroma, and then they miraculously disappear for 6 months.

Auroramancer3 votes

While I'm in the same boat as you, as far as emotes not costing IP, let's not be be hyperbolic about...

Why never let free2play players enjoy something new?

We get new games modes, champion updates, etc. Being free2play in a game with cosmetics that you can pay for is literally the lowest tier of benefits. I'm not surprised that emotes cost RP, but come on man, Riot is about the weakest offender for making free2play players feel shafted.

Though it has been getting worse recently...

Galiö3 votes

Im from the future. Whats IP?

StarGuardianWeeb2 votes

Emotes are most likely the solution they had to the money they were going to lose by making runes free, if anything the best we could hope for is that they do the same thing they do with chromas and twice a year they will make it so you can buy emotes with blue essence.

Which BTW if any rioter happens to see this there will still be twice a year sales of chromas for blue Essence correct?

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

A better question is why should they be free? (IP is technically free)

SoonshiL2 votes

Where you dropped as a child?

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

No, really. Why should they be free?

PaladinNO2 votes

...all the emotes cost 350 RP!

That's even a sale price. Regular price is 450 RP per emote. They should've added the x6,5 IP (Blue essence) option.

Promotional sale price at 350 RP, plus a permanent option of 2925 IP, would've been just fine.

Fegone1 votes

Spending money on something that everyone else can disable and won't even see when you spam it, Rito this is insane.

Wynterhøwł1 votes

So you're saying if they were not disable-able you'd buy them?

Fegone3 votes

If they were not disable-able, AND if they were of slight better quality, then yes. Then I would. The ones they offer so far, I don't think are of enough artistic quality to convince me to make the purchase.
