You have to play extremely aggressive or need a favorable matchup to earn significantly more with spellthiefs than with the other two options, which puts you on a clock and forces you to look for interactions even unfavorable ones, while the opponent support can go even or "out farm" you by simply playing safe.
This was not a problem when you could proc spellthiefs more often outside of the laning phase, but now that all support items have a similar range restriction this advantage has been lost.
now you take it for the dmg or you go coin.
except thats exactly why you want to pick spelltheifs, when you have an aggressive matchup. plus, most champions have a ways yo reach you from a decent distance away, so it really isnt that hard to poke from a distance to proc it.
