I want to main malzahar. Any tips? :D

I'm silver 1, a jungle main since end of season 5. I decided I'd like to play mid lane to carry my games. And for whatever reason landed on malz. I like the idea of playing at a distance and laying down dmg. Does anyone have any tips for the laning phase or the late game? I always give up one tricking a champ but I want to really learn this guy. Thanks

I wish you could have played Old Malzahar, he was a much better champion :(

You are a higher rank than me currently, but I'll still give a few pointers:

  • Your E+W will push waves pretty hard, so be aware of this for ganks.
  • Your Q has a slight delay on it, takes some getting used to it.
  • Wait for your passive to come back up before leaving the safety of your turret, you are immobile and have no self-peel and you automatically push really hard.
  • A lot of people say ult the carry but that often leaves you wide open for a gangbang and at this elo your team doesn't know how to protect you, its situational (say assassin jumps into backline, they are the target most of the time, sometimes you ult the front line stopping your divers, sometimes you can get the carry).
  • Malzahar is slow and has no mobility, so roaming is difficult, so you want to play with your Jungler a lot. It is real easy to catch enemy jungler out with your R and get an easy kill then turn on anyone who comes to help.
  • Do not forget to hit E + W before you R, otherwise your damage won't be maximized and you will have blown your ult.

Know your matchups, damage, and your capability. Malzahar scales well, but his early damage has taken heavy hits.

  • If you push the wave with E-W, then what do you plan to do next?
  • If you're pushing, are you prepared to deal with the jungler if you stay in lane?
  • What to build into what, and the purpose of the build?
  • Last hitting a minion near the enemy with E to stay out of range works, but do you follow up or just poke?
  • Should you ward enemy jungle to go annoy the jungler, or use it to quick push and roam?
  • Who is most worthy of my suppression?
  • Should I save Q for when the assassin or tank engages to silence them, or use it to hit the backline as mine does?
  • I can use W to block a skillshot, but should I turn because they missed an important ability, or still run?

Questions you have to ask yourself as you play him.

Press R. Literally. Just press R.

Jungler coming for a gank? Press R.

Someone overstayed or over stepped a little? Press R.

Pushing a turret, or diving one? Press R.

Any team follow up at all will result in a guaranteed kill.

If you're going to push, commit, don't lay past the middle of the lane.

Try to cast your voidlings after your opponent uses a skill that can clear them

When Zed ults you you can flash under tower and ult him. Also works on other champs with a skill that brings them to you. I've seen it work on Talon but that was probably an accident, the timing is absurd.

Play with a Rengar or similar on your team. XD Did this where my friend was Rengar top and I was Malzahar mid. Every time our ults were up, he'd roam down and we'd ult the poor enemy Diana out of relevance. Felt bad for Diana, but it was fun times.

Play passively, especially Pre-6. Remember that your spell-shield is there to catch anything that manages to reach you, not an excuse to over-extend. Your E can't kill minions from full health early on, auto attack them and let your minions soften them up before putting the dot on any of them.

When danger is approaching but not quiet here yet, it's good to put your dot on the wave, release the voidlings, and then walk away.

R their carry.

Ward well early, push in your laner, then roam on the enemy bot lane and just flash r. (im no expert)

Here's something important to keep in mind.

  • His E applies a DoT (Damage over Time) on the enemy which lasts 4 seconds. Remember this and W are you primary damage source, which is why you can refresh this E duration with Q and R.

  • So your combo would usually be this when fighting someone E > W > R, remember your W Voidlings deal increased damage towards targets who are being affected by your E DoT.

  • If they engage on you while they still have E, use your Q to refresh it (if you have Rylais Crystal Scepter) the DoT will apply a continous slow, allow you to stay at a safer distance.

  • One more quick farming tip, get Minion Dematerializer to increase your ability damage against minions and always use your E on a Minion who has half health and then keep basic attacking it which will cause it to spread to another nearby unit and keep doing it (provides good farming/pushing). If your E kills a unit, you gain a 2% of your max mana back.

  • You can always use your Q as a poke tool since it has a relatively low cooldown but it has a fairly high mana cost so keep that in mind.

He's trash and all you gotta do is farm the entire game, and press R on a carry.

I don't main malz (or really even play him), but here's my general take on him (from playing against him or watching streams): Your e (space aids) is amazing for safely clearing waves. Try to make it bounce throughout the whole wave once you get a few ranks in it - do this by doing enough damage to each melee minion that it passes on to (and it alone should be enough to kill casters). You may need to auto the melees before using e, or use your Q on the melees.

You get mana back for last hitting creeps. Make sure you get the last hit when possible, don't rely on your e or w, add in that auto attack towards the end.

Your Q is an AOE silence. This can WRECK teamfights, or even just your lane opponent in ganks. Silence prevents summoner spells too. If you're receiving a gank and your jungler cc's your lane opponent, use your Q while they're cc'd so they can't flash away right after.

Be careful with how you use your R. Recommend you play a lot of normals first to get used to it. R seems good, but can be wasted far too easily. If the damage to get the kill isn't there (e.g. it's a 1v1) it's probably not worth using R unless you need the cc to save yourself (get cooldowns back). If you think you're engaging 2v1 and you use R, but other enemies show up, you're a sitting duck and an easy target for them. Basically, when you use R, you cc yourself too, in reasonably close range. It's really easy to use R from a not-great position, and since you're squishy you die instead.

You either want to use R for picks when you have allies around to protect you, or in teamfights when you have a good tank in front of you.

Jinzo Torrance9/8/2018, 1:11:08 PM1 votes

OMEGALUL How can you even ask how to play reworked Malz? Just press E W on wave and the champion will go on autopilot for you, teamfights use Q and R to create disruption and use the free banshee passive to play like a moron

Leto GT9/8/2018, 2:52:23 PM1 votes

Just play him and watch High elo vods. You'll fine put pretty soon that he's not that easy to play. He has a lot of weakness. First one being that he's single target based. Hence, you can't push and harass at the same time (ahri Q or ekko Q for example). Second, he doesnt have frontal threat (anivia Q for example) or mobility. So he's very vulnerable to ganks so you need to be careful when you push. Those weakness are less of an issue when your E is lvled up but ppl will usually jump on you as soon as you've used your E on minions so you need to be thoughtfull. In teamfight, position around your carry and stop flanks from bruisers ans assassins. Make sure to not get caught or you won't make. Press tab often to check who has qss.

SweedishGunner9/8/2018, 3:15:48 PM1 votes

His laning phase is somewhat weak and you should focus on CS'ing until you can get more mana in your pocket so you can push and poke.

Try hold on to your passive as long as you can, it's a safety net that wards off aggressive plays such as ganks.

Don't always listen to teammates who want you to flash R. It does no damage without Voidlings and Malefic Visions already on the target.

Not a salty comment whatsoever, but Malz (and believe me i played him!) has no skill involvement. U literally spam all ur buttons and thats how u play him, because he has nothing techanical too him you spam buttons, and wave clear instantly. (thats how i play him anyway.. Just spam buttons and win 1v1's or wave clear nicely and then i go 3/1/5
