i don't play him but his ult possibly being changed where he has to secure a kill to get the revive seems like it will ruin the champ. do assists count? why would you want to play him ?

Assists count as takedowns. Basically if these changes go through he will not be able to pull off ridiculous towerdives in lane with his ult and get away for free even if he messes up (which is pretty huge in pro play and that's why they're getting rid of it), but he'll be a lot more rewarding in teamfights because if he plays well and sets up kills for his team he'll have his ult duration increased by 5 for each kill/assist, and will get a guaranteed revive upon one takedown.
