[Idea TB][Comment/Discuss pls] Team builder for draft pick (believe me. It is not like others)
Note: This is WIP and it is mostly meant to try throwing an idea to be improved and re-iterated. My idea still does not work for real life due to it's limitations

Overview
This is a detailed view about improving the soloq and duoq draft pick.
This idea works by giving a team builder(TB) start (for the first phases) followed by a rearrange and adaption on how the draft pick works.
I made this because there is too much trolling in the champion select and the meta's rule (role and champion choice follows pick order) does not really work with the kind of users that appear in ranked. Another reason why I came to make this was because there were people asking for team builder with the draft pick (and I felt the same).
This idea is meant to change how draft pick happens in the user's own team while, at the same time, reducing the trolling and bulling in champion select.
It is also meant to let people play in their favorite role without putting up a fight. My experience says that, usually, this means that they will play better and rage less (TB test times experience and normal q experience).
Intro
This idea is to try to discuss and innovate a way to make a TB-like improvement to the ranked queue just like TB seems to be improving normal games queue. As it is now in soloq, one is thrown to a team he does not know from anywhere. There can even be the ~1% chance (or so) that all players are main supports, which is definitely good a outcome in low ELO (MMR) (happened to me only once in S3 but happened)...
This was developed by mixmashing my ideas with other people's ideas into something that, at least, work.
Sorry for the wall-o-Text but I really wanted to describe properly each thing that this system would have to avoid doubts and to try to make my idea as clear as possible to allow discussion.
How I got information I used to write this (You may skip it, I'm just givin awards)
First I'll write about the main context behind the ideas that I'm using.
What I've been noticing when I try to play ranked in Bronze/Silver is that everyone, with some exceptions, only knows how to play well (for his level) a single role (I only know 2, BTW) with a single or a couple champions. Actually, that's also what is advisable to do by the pro's who give out tips to players (they also say to be decent at other roles but most ignore that part). I don't have personal experience in soloq with high level players (I'm not one myself) but I have been watching pro player streams that contain the draft pick champion select.
Please note that what I'm suggesting is meant to improve draft pick for soloq (or duoq) and not for a 5 member premade team
What is team builder?
For the ones who don't know team builder yet, here's some footage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BYVyUmwfyQ <- This one was when role definition was locked.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5buITeiRHY <- This one is quite nice. Has one or other inaccuracies but it explains well.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find a video that shows when the team leader can select the role the users play.
Now, on to the phases where this system will work on:
The phases
Phase 1
Team leader prepares a team composition just like in the current TB system.
If you don't know what the team builder is, check out the "What is team builder?" section above.
Phase 2
Players are placed in the team just like it works now.
Phase 3
Players confirm that they are ready to play and are ok with the team as it is
Phase 4
Players discuss and vote for the banned champions. The team leader always has the last opinion about who to ban.
(leaving in this phase and beyond will create a time penalty (no LP penalty yet))
Phase 5
Players confirm that they are ok with the decision.
Phase 6
(from now on, leaving will have a longer time penalty than the previous phase and will also include a LP penalty)
The team is matched with another team using a system like the matchmaking that is currently in place for draft pick. Gong happens; players are sent to the draft game view (similar to the current one in draft pick).
Phase 7
Bans are shown to both sides. The order they appear works the same way as it is now except that it is instantaneous.
Phase 8
Champions are revealed one at a time. The order they appear is chosen by the team leader. If the team leader fails to set one, then the order they appear is equal to how the current system works.
- After each appearance, it is given the chance to the players to change his champion. This can only happen as long as it has not been shown to the enemy. (Once it is shown to the enemy, it is locked for real.
- The champion a user changes to must respect the bans
- The champion a user changes to requires approval from the team leader and 1 team mate or from 3 team mates.
Phase 9
Players select their skins and discuss whatever they want while the timer runs out and the draft mode music finishes to play (please don't change it .)
Phase 10
The battle has begun!!!
Leaving: If a player leaves between phase 2 and phase 5 TB will reset change state to phase 2, just like TB works now, without the player that left. After phase 5 it works as follows:
- If the player that left belonged to the enemy team
- Return to phase 6
- If the player that left belonged to the own team
- Return to phase 2
Each phase in detail
(I'll refrain to explain phases 1 to 3 because it requires no changes from the latest TB version that went to public beta)
Phase 4
There are 3 to 6 champions to ban.
The voting happens in an UI that looks like the UI used for the All for One.
There's one iteration for each banned champion. For starters they can be listed on the bottom where the bans for both teams would appear.
The bans work as follows:
The first 3 bans are guaranteed to happen/exist in the matchmaking (they work the same way as they are now).
The last 3 bans are alternative bans that are only used if the other team had also banned partly or completely the same bans.
Here's three examples:
Team A bans: Ammumu, Taric, Zyra, shen, tristana and rengar. Team B bans: Zyra, soraka, lulu, yasuo, karthus and irelia.
The system decides that A is first to ban. So the bans are:
Ammumu(team A), Zyra(team B), Taric(team A), Soraka(team B), shen(team A) and lulu(team B).
This happened because team B had banned Zyra, so team A's Zyra ban was discarded and shen was used instead.
Example 2:
Team A bans: Ammumu, Taric, Zyra, shen, tristana and rengar. Team B bans: Ammumu, Taric, Zyra, shen, tristana and rengar.
The system decides that team A is first to ban. The bans will work this way:
Ammumu (team A), Taric (team B), Zyra (team A), Shen (team B), Tristana (team A), rengar (team B).
Example 3:
Team A bans: Ammumu, Taric, Zyra, shen, tristana and rengar. Team B bans: Ammumu, Taric, Zyra, soraka, anivia and ziggs.
The system decides that team B is first to ban. The bans will work this way:
Ammumu (team B), Taric (team A), Zyra (team B), Shen (team A), soraka (team B), tristana (team A).
(see explanation about phase 7 for more info)
Why like this?
From I've noticed, seems like there's no such thing as counter bans in soloq. The pro streams I had the pleasure to see do not show any (with only very rare exceptions) counter bans (banning a champion based on an enemy ban).
Also, in low and medium ELO, there's a good percentage that the players have already decided who to play with and it's not that usual the situation when they focus on counter picking. On high ELO, they focus a lot on counter picking to gain advantage in lane and win the lanes. It's also very important to select correctly the order at which the champions are picked to maximize counter-picking and minimize being counter-picked.
In this proposal, I try to make this still work for high ELO and for people on low ELO who try to follow the same guidelines that the high ELO use.
Phase 5
It's just like phase 2 where all just confirm they are ready.
This is because this is the last chance to exit with just a time penalty.
Phase 6
When searching for a team to match against, the system takes into account the champion pre-selection of each team. This means that two teams with ammumu are not matched same with a team that didn't ban ammumu (in the first 3) is not match against a team that banned ammumu in the first 3 of the ban list (or such that he'd be banned when joining the ban lists).
Phase 7
Each team cannot see the complete enemy's ban list, only the selected bans. For the example 3 (of phase 4), for example. The teams would see like this:
Team A (sees team B's bans as): Ammumu, Zyra, soraka
Team B (sees team A's bans as): Taric, Shen, tristana
For the rest, it's like it is now.
Phase 8
It is quite similar to how it is now in therms of ordering.
Champion changes would require acceptance because, without it, it would open a huge window to abuse. We can't allow someone going for the support role bottom and then changing to become the 2nd jungler that's dishonest. Allowing champion change is also open for abuse because other can pressure that user to change champion but it is already like that now so it does not solve that part but also does not make it worse (IMO).
Some conclusions
This solves
- Role fighting. Each one goes in the role he wants.
- No fighting about pick order and who knows to play which role.
- Banning is more of a team decision and less telling the leader in the chat.
- It's easier to select weird metas to surprise the enemy all with enough time to prepare them.
- No unwanted troll picks.
- The duo does not smash the other members with their rules (at least as easy and as often as it happens now).
- There's time to discuss a strategy (if they are up for it >_>)
- Most of the current team builder's advantages.
This destroys
- Bans become more complex.
- There are bans that are selected that are never actually used.
- Champion "pre-selection" is not rigid enough.
- If the enemy counter-picks before your champion is shown with the champion you selected, you are forced to change the champion.
This can maybe be solved by asking each player two champions (making the chance of this happening much, much lower) but I wonder about such system as there's already the counter-pick mechanic in this idea.
- If the enemy counter-picks before your champion is shown with the champion you selected, you are forced to change the champion.
- There's more to be done to get into the game.
- Is the extra effort and time used worth?
- It's not as intuitive to use.
- Quite hard to program, even worse than the current team builder.
- Matchmaking would be much harder to process as there's more variables and fuzzy variables (the bans after the 3rd one) to compare and to match against.
Tl;DR
Ranked improvement to prevent trolls and whatnot.
Read the "The phases" section.
Also, sorry for the Wall-o-Text but I wanted to be clear and complete with my idea.
