@Riot Please be careful with Caitlyn Buffs

Headshot [ Passive ]: Now additionally ignores 50% of a champion’s bonus armor (same mechanic as Yasuo’s ult)

Please do this extremely tentatively and don't over tune her, I know this is subject to change but sometimes you all go too far with your nerfs/buffs.

Are you concerned that this is going too far? It's nice, but this isn't that major of a buff.

Lastwhisper = 35% Armour Pen, Enemy has 200 Armour, 30 of it is base armour 35% of 200 = 70 Armour reduced total

With buff 50% of 170 = 85 armour reduced 200 - 85 = 115 armour 35% of 115 = 40.25 Armour reduced 85 + 40.25 = 125.25 total armour reduced That's an entire extra 55.25 armour reduced, not to mention she will be critting. So yes it is a massive buff,

PolarTroop2 votes

It is a major buff really. Just depends on how often she uses it lane. 50% Armor pen is dumb but atleast is not as long as Yasuo after ulting.

Sinlaire1 votes

read again. its "penetrates 50% of bonus armor (armor gained from items) on her head shot passive." which only happens once in every 7 auto attacks.

again. she only ignore half of your armor itemization once in every 7 atuto attacks. meaning 1-2 times a team fight.

forget hardly game breaking, its hardly relevant on anyone short of a nasus or leona since if someone has no item armor, it literally does nothing.

Sightless6610 votes

30 of it is base armour

Actually not. A champion's armor per level is considered as base armor for the purpose of bonus armor penetration calculations. So, if I was attacking a Maokai, 96.7 of that 200 armor would be base armor. If I was attacking a squishy target, I'd likely be getting almost no penetration at all from my passive.

It's one out of every 5 attacks, and it's only functional if attacking a target who has built a significant amount of armor. It's nice, but it really isn't that much. It's not a massive buff. This is pretty cautious as buffs go.

junglerboy163 votes

yeah, using that, you would penetrate roughly 50 armor with her passive, and then the penetration of last whisper would be dealing with roughly 150 armor, for about another 50 (I know this isn't exact) where the last whisper by itself would penetrate 70, meaning she would only penetrate a total of 30-35 extra armor. Not to mention the fact that it still takes her several attacks to get the proc off.

All this does is make her not fall off as hard late game, because early game the armor pen will be unnoticeable, and late game it just means she won't be as ineffective against a tank with 300 armor.

AnonymousEnigma1 votes

u sure? I was under the impression that items like void staff/LW were completely necessary for lategame even if the enemy isnt really building MR/Armor (I might be completely wrong)

Sightless661 votes

Void staff and last whisper penetrate total resistances. They do not care about whether armor or mr is bonus or base. Caitlyn's headshot will only penetrate bonus armor, so it will penetrate nothing if the enemy has no bonus armor.

MrBuffington2 votes

I don't think it's too big a deal; I hadn't played Caitlyn in a while, but I tried her out in PBE yesterday, it's nice but it's only every 7/6/5 auto attacks. The damage was noticeable but I didn't feel like it was gamebreaking or anything; maybe the % could be toned back a bit, but idk.

APrinnyDood1 votes

Uh, dude, every champion but Thresh has more than 30 base armor. You get armor when you level up. That's base armor man.

Halo1 votes

at level 11 malphite have 60 armor. now lets say that he have bought and extra 140 armor. That means ha have 200 armor. The average armor at level 11 is around 50 and at level 18 its an average of 80.

lets start with somone who have 50 (base is your starting + armor per level) base armor and 200 total.

150x 0.5= 75

now lets add the base armor.

50+ 75= 125

and then lastwhisper (as its applied after the armor reduction)

125x 0.65= 81.25 =45% dmg redcution.

compared to only lastwhisper

200x 0.65 = 130= 57% dmg reduction.

The thing is because its only every 7th basic attack and also will only really be noticeable vs tanks. I dont really think they over did it. its an avrage of 1.7% dmg increase per attack if you stand out of a bush and 3% while standing in a bush. This only doing something vs tanks i dont see it becoming a problem.

ClatoVerataNicto1 votes

Caitlyn's basic attacks generate 1 stack of Headshot (doubled when attacking from brush). Attacks against towers will not grant any stacks.

At 7 / 6 / 5 stacks, her next basic attack will deal bonus physical damage equal to 50% of her attack damage (tripled against minions and monsters).

The 5 stacks at higher levels is important to your math.

Still, if Ekko gets near you, you be dead. So very dead.

will people stop whining about him already! sheesh, id rather face ekko over any other assassin in the game.

As a person who has played Caitlyn very often, even being one of the first champions I've gotten a 1v5 pentakill on, I think that these buffs are very unnecessary. Or at least with my personal experience with Caitlyn, she doesn't need them. She's like Vayne, extremely balanced already and it would kind of be stupid to buff or nerf her too much. She has obvious strengths and weaknesses and both have fairly high skill caps (yes, I'm talking about the Caitlyns who immediately use their ultimate at level 6 to poke your Leona/Alistar/Thresh vs the Caitlyns who execute the enemy carry from halfway across the map with it.)

She's really good at poking, but her main poke can be easily dodged, but still can hurt a lot if you don't + she has a huge, permanent range. However, she lacks real steroids and her passive is very unreliable or just difficult to manage. Her early game is great for the poke, her mid game is trash since she is a very poor teamfighter, and her late game is amazing due to her range and her late game scaling on her Q.

I think that these buffs won't change Caitlyn too much, but I really see no actual reason in them.

junglerboy161 votes

It really will only buff her late game a small amount so that she isn't as hard pressed when facing a 300 armor tank. it seems like a minor buff to just make sure she stays relevant as the game goes on.

A Miss Fortune1 votes

It's a buff to both her early and late game, both where she does exceptionally well in. At level 1 she can do near true damage with a 150% attack damage steroid, which will hit like a truck on top of her other poke.

o9y9pcvBhd1 votes

Naw it is 50% BONUS armor, not total armor so if you dont build armor the passive isnt noticeable

A Miss Fortune1 votes

Oh, I guess I didn't read the bonus armor. But still, Caitlyn isn't really suppose to be an armor shredding ADC it just feels weird.

NorthernDruid3 votes

She doesn't shred though, it's just the Headshot which ignores 50% bonus armor.

Honestly I feel like sniping someone in the head ignoring most of their protection feels pretty right.

Not that Riot cares about such things anymore though.

I liked and like where she is, I'm just nervous about her getting buffs cause more people will play her to see just how balanced she really is, as people aren't giving her a chance.

I am afraid because if they buff her even a little, and her winrate goes up, they will then nerf her to be worse than what she is before said buffs, and that worries me (Because it is what Riot has a terrible habit of doing).

A Miss Fortune1 votes

I feel the exact same way with my main Miss Fortune, she's pretty strong and just my last few games I went something like 14-1, 13-1, 22-4, 14-0. She's an extremely powerful champion that, if you master, can do incredibly well. She's not underpowered or overpowered, she's balanced.

If they gave her just one huge buff, I would be afraid too many people would play her, her steady winrate of almost always 51.70% would go up much higher and then she would get gutted (again).

Caitlyn is already pretty balanced, and it gets annoying enough seeing the enemy Caitlyn who's never played her before use her ultimate at level 6 to poke your tanks, I really want to keep her as a good ADC of mine without her getting nerfed for falsely being accused of being overpowered.

fractalfantasies2 votes

It's a minor buff and tbh, I'm sure everyone is bored of the only adc's (aside from reworked Ashe who is new and interesting) being played are Jinx and Sivir

idoki1 votes

Bonus armor pen, so basically it wont be as useful against squishies (other ADCs mostly in lane) but will make her a tank shredder

Honking1 votes

This won't change anything about Caitlyn , shes just a worse Jinx at the moment.

Cait isn't really a late game adc, she mostly relies on her early game to get ahead cause her mid game is garbage. Her late is decent but can't even be compared to Sivir who isn't even a hyper carry like Jinx

??? Since when Lucian has a good late game?

??? Since when Lucian has a good late game?

Yeah, I was thinking about him before the nerfs where he was doing good damage at every point in the game. That s4 lucy was good, I forgot they nerfed his ult very hard. I should have used someone like Twitch who is more late game oriented.

The Loveless1 votes

Runaans Cait inc

kanacho1 votes

Remember that her passive procs only X number of hits so you need time to ramp up all that damage, but runaan's can make that a lot faster in team fights.

Lugg1 votes

I think it is a reasonable buff. Comparing it to Yas is unfair since his ult can hit multiple people, hers can only hit one.

NorthernDruid1 votes

Especially since Yasuo's is lasting while this buff for Caitlyn is only on her Passive shots.

Ace Access 1 votes

I wonder what it would be like if Cait built item 3035 and item 3071

Fadedpf1 votes

I was expecting her head shot proc to apply this bonus armor pen but when I saw it was with anything I was like WHAT?

ClatoVerataNicto1 votes

Suddenly hurricane Cait might be a thing.

Suffocation2 votes

Well, who cares about AA that ignores 50% of a champion’s bonus armor if you have no damage ^^

Onegarion1 votes

Unless everyone starts building a lot of armor we really won't see it since its only for Bonus Armor.

ClatoVerataNicto1 votes

It's the League of Tank. If you have 3 meat shields fully decked in armor running at you, it might actually be a decent pickup. You know, situationally.

Onegarion1 votes

Even situationally it only hits 1 target. I really don't see it being that usefull tho. I've already hated when people build it now because "MORE CRITS" really isn't that good when other items give you crit just as much plus more useful stats on top of it.

Dedrius1 votes

I don't think it will overtune her, but it will give her a nice boost in this tanky meta to complete with Jinx/ashe/sivir

Forlynn1 votes

Well she will be viable and maybe even op.

Gigablitz1 votes

It's only one out of x autoattacks. I think it smoothens her power curve a bit
