AP itemization is just as diverse as AD itemization

The mage circlejerk has started once again. One person posts a relatively sucessful mage post, another follows up. Soon, you have all these people trying to farm upvotes.

So, recently, there have been numerous posts about AD itemization being more diverse and versatile than mage itemization. However, I find this to be highly disputable. Although there are numerous AD items that give unique passives or actives, such as item 3814 and item 3071, it's not like mages don't have access to other things as well. To name a few, there is item 3157, item 3152, and item 3151. item 3100 and item 3001 also have passives that are quite powerful.

Another thing that has been complained about is that AD itemization also gives more MR than AP itemization gives armor. However, people have not considered the fact that AP itemization also gives more HP. The last two items named above give lots of HP. So do item 3027 and item 3116 . In fact, it is not even the case that AD itemization gives more MR. People believe that most AD champions will go both item 3814 and item 3156 at the same time when they really only take one of the two. They are much more likely to grab item 3814 while item 3156 is used more on brusier champions.

It can be argued that AD itemization gives lifesteal while mages have virtually no forms of sustain whatsoever. These lifesteal items are often only prominent on ADCs, and are usually ignored on other classes. Even then, most ADCs do not get lifesteal until later in the game.

I'm actually seeing more diverse builds when it comes to mages rather than Assasins or ADCs. On Assassins, you usually see item 3147, item 3142, item 3814, some boots, item 3071, and then ethier item 3026 or another offensive item such as item 3812. But when you look at mages, you see all kinds of builds with lots of mixtures of items. Of course, item 3165 is always rushed first, but then it starts branching out into all sorts of items.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that Mages have as much access to variety in itemization as ADCs or Assasins. They have many unique passives. They also give HP, Armor, and MR while AD itemization only gives MR and only one item (item 3071) gives HP. Hopefully, the mage circlejerk will stop one day.

Mage itemization is great right now. Just make Morello less bloated and give it a counterpart or two and it would be excellent.

"Counterpart" of what sort? Because Riot's tried having two different mana sustain items before. It just ended with one of them never getting built.

Right now Morello is good on everyone because it provides everything a mage could need except maybe mana regeneration for utility mages. It has high AP, high cdr, and tons of mana. There is no trade off like: "Oh gee, should I buy this mana item for the high AP and grevious wounds but less cdr, or this medium AP mana item for the high cdr and mana regen?

Once you have a mana item, you DO start making these choices. Your second item could be: item 3135 item 3285 item 3001 item 3157 item 3116 or sometimes even item 3151. You can go raw AP from void staff, poke/burst with luden's, defense and utilty with abyssal/zhonyas/rylais, or just max out your damage against the low mr carries with Liandry's. If you go for damage, you generally lose out on utility or defense.

Like I said.

They tried that before.

When I started League way back when in season 3, I just remember that I was supposed to build Athene's on Orianna and that at some point (I think start of season 4?) suddenly Morello was the better item. Then back to Athene's. Then back to Morello. I didn't understand it at the time, but looking back it probably had something to do with both items giving 20% cdr and athene's having magic resist. Instead of picking the one that better served their champion, people just picked the one that would do more damage to the other item based on AP vs MR. It was just an arms race between offensive and defensive stats. The mana regen didn't make a difference in lane since duels are fought using flat mana, not regen.

The problem is that the two items shouldn't even be competing for the attention of the same champions. Morello COULD be even more overloaded and give 300 HP for the sake of front line mages, but it doesn't need to because Rod of Ages is already serving that class of mage. Because Rod of ages is sufficiently meeting the needs of front line mages, Morellonomicon doesn't need HP or any other defensive stat. In the same way, if there was another usable 20% cdr mana item for the sake of utility mages, Morello wouldn't need as much cdr anymore and could be de-bloated slightly to just 10% and have a cost reduction, which is perfectly fine for burst mages since they are more interested in the high damage it provides. Meanwhile utility mages Like Orianna and Karma would still want the 20% cdr so they can support their team come team fights.

Those wouldn't have to be the exact stats, but I hope you can see what I mean about the items serving different classes of mages.
