Simple idea for Garen's Q

Make his Q a small leap skillshot. I am talking a dash small enough to make it over small walls and that is about it. Why you ask? Well allow me a minute of your time and I tell you my reasoning.

Garen has two main problems, the first is that he has no hard crowd control (silence still lets them auto and move around) and the second is that he has no way of getting into the fight. As a Bruiser/Tank the first problem is already critical to his identity, if you can't do damage (which will happen if you have a crappy lane) then you need to focus on tankiness so you can crowd control and peel but this is an option Garen flat out doesn't have, but if he did have some sort of lockdown he would be ridiculously overpowered in lane, so what can we do about it?

The answer is simple, we focus on the second problem instead. As a front line melee fighter it is absolutely critical that you be able to get into the fight and provide for your team. All Garen has is a speed boost and that still forces him to try to bull rush into the enemy team. So here is what we do. We change the Q into a jump followed by the normal speed boost. This will allow him a small gap closer to initiate a fight or turn around without providing much else aside from chase potential. This would also stop him from being completely countered by champions with ranged harass without just having to try to charge them.

I had a very similar discussion on the forums. Basically, the community on the forums does not agree with you and I. They believe he should be kept at the minimum for new players, and that he should not see competitive play.

The problems you addressed are the ones I focused on as well. I wanted to employ a dash mechanic where he leaped forward, and then swung his sword out in a conic area. If champions were in the further half, they would be displaced backwards a few 100 units. If champions were closer to the base of the blade, they would be stunned for a short time. I feel that silence is being phased out of the game, due to it being an un-fun mechanic. This new mechanic would help his identity as an aoe fighter, and it would give him interesting counterplay (and outplays).

A few additional problems that I focused on in my post, is that Garen is not fun to play, and "mastering" Garen only means that you look like every other Garen player. In other words, he does not have a high level of replay value. Playing him a lot is not rewarding. Playing him at a high level is not rewarding. Another thing I addressed is that the speed boost itself does not fit with his identity. Most of the time, players use it to run away. He is a front line fighter that rushes into the enemy team doing as much aoe damage as possible. One of the problems that came up in my discussion about this is that giving Garen a dash / leap mechanic would give him too much mobility as well. I suggested two things: 1) the skill could interact with walls through bonus damage / bonus stun timer / etc. 2) the dash / leap mechanic would be extremely short range. The range I gave for comparison was Urgot's auto attack range.

No, just make it like Hec's E. Give him more range when he activates it, and he dashes onto them when he silences
