Can this be the only season for runes reforged?

And we go back to something akin to the old system for next season, just not with the outdated "rune purchase and page system" and allow players to set runes? I am referring to just runes as masteries started having some garbage in them as well, although no where near as bad as the current rune system.

The reason I ask this is I do not believe the game can ever have any sense of balance with the current rune system.

  1. It provides way too much snowballing in games as every rune choice has it's impact multiplied by the person ahead way too much. Every keystone that has any scaling will do this. There is so much extra power in runes that is hard to compensate over when behind.

  2. I originally thought runes would have a chance for giving multiple builds on champs. I was wrong. You either take the strongest rune for that champ or gut yourself. The runes feel like they are either S tier or F tier with only a few in-between. This has really pigeon holed champs into specific setups. Aside from this, champs are nerfed because one set of runes is way too strong on them. This further lessons your choices of runes as you are hurting yourself more by not taking the optimized set which they were nerfed over.

  3. IMO, Things like Electrocute, PTA, Conquerer, or even Aery are things that should not exist as rune choices. Damage and shielding should come from the champs kit, not these side extras everyone has now. I personally think rune choices should go back to being mostly passive stat increases (whether they be defensive or offensive stat increases) so that you can alter some early stats vs your lane opponent. When you reign dmg back into what is in the champions kit, I would think it would be easier to maintain game balance and allow more champs to come back into the game effectively.

  4. Everytime a new rune is introduced or one is tweaked, we go through this head spinning process of watching a complete overhaul of the roster in what is top tier vs lower tier. The lower tier champs feel like this season gives them less chance to succeed out of past seasons.

Just a little minor rumbling from someone that is not a fan of runes reforged.

No. Reforged is far superior. Fuck spending 20k+ IP just to play the game (assuming you dont buy the wrong runes because youre new to the game and dont know whats good)

The game took a horrific turn off a cliff as soon as Runes reforged came in. It instantly made sooooo many champs irrelevant. There will always be imbalances, just hopefully not this bad. I agree with Lord Loki though, while reverting the rune system would be a faster approach to fixing things, they will not go back. They will keep tweaking until things get better, it is just going to be a painful long process. S8 is pretty much a loss. I bet it will echo into season 9 as well. OP is spot on though, runes reforged actually gave less choice and created more imbalance. I had to have 2-3 rune pages for any champ I played in the old system based on who I was against, and even then I would go in and make some tweaks real quick. I would have to remake rune pages frequently. Now I can usually get away with 1 rune page per champ, and every now and then go to 2.

Riot won't stop now dude, too much time and effort have gone into it for them to give up now. They'll keep hacking away at it until it's right. Should get there by next season though xD

i feel like runes were good.. Just so much more optimization available. I just will wait for the day until phase rush riven is viable again

Runes Reforged isn't really the problem. It pretty much more or less offers all the stats and abilities that old runes/masteries did.

The problem is when they do something to the Rune system to add a new rune which has asymmetric benefits like Conquerer, or Aftershock.
