Smiting Objectives

Ever since they changed smite to have a number on it and changed baron and dragon to read a number I have gotten significantly worse at smiting objectives. I think it might have to do something with me not smiting it until I finally see a lower number than my smite has. Whatever the effect is I was way better at smiting objectives before this change to objectives. Anyone have tips, ideas, or have a similar experience as me and how they got better at smiting objectives.
