What I think Bard needs changed on 5.6

KR LEE S1N··3 votes·9,940 views

I think the biggest problem with Bard is clearly his lack of damage. I think if his ult did SOME, not a lot, but just some amount of AOE damage it would be a great buff for him. As a support main I picked this champ up quickly and like him a lot, but I don't know if he is viable in ranked. I'm still practicing him, but I think unless he gets more buffs I won't use him in ranked when there are better picks, such as thresh, blitz, janna, sona.

Edit: Only does damage to enemy champs, not your teammates (Maybe even heal your teammates?!)

We'd like to keep Bard's ult damage free, since putting a damaging effect on it leads to some conflicting uses and muddies it's purpose (keep dudes out of a fight, whether allies safe or enemies unable to contribute).

We definitely agree Bard needs some buffs though. We held off from doing substantially changes in patch 5.6 since by the time the patch changes locked Bard had only been out for 6 days. That's not enough time to see how people adapt to and learn a new champ, and we've sometimes buffed champs unnecessarily in the past when we've reacted too quickly, so we decided to give it a bit more time. At this point we're confident he does need some more significant buffs though, and have a better idea of where to test out more power. You should see some buffs on the PBE in the next couple of days at a guess, with a focus on base stats, amount of mana restored per chime and faster Meep respawn. We're also planning to test a little tweaking to Chime spawn locations, though that's more speculative and might be more of a feel change than a power one, not sure yet.

Maybe a better option would be to have it give a speed boost to allies and slow to enemies that get caught by it once it ends?

I'd gladly trade Cast Range for Increased Missile Speed.

Deep Terror Nami2 votes

Q is just too damn slow! Also really hard to hit your target even if they're right in front of you, if there are minions in the way. I think it's the only support CC that has that issue. If I may, I have a suggestion off the top of my head;

  • (Q) Cosmic Binding - Automatically calls a Giant Meep to your side for 5 seconds. Your next attack launches the Giant Meep to deal extra damage to the target (based on number of collected Chimes) and slowing. The Giant Meep continues past the target, and stuns if it hits another enemy or a wall.

Basically, Q is an auto-attack buff guaranteed to land on the primary target. Still requires you to time your auto properly to hit the right secondary target or wall.

BottleCapster1 votes

Qs missile speed isn't that big of an issue tbh, Though i'd like it if bard had a better way of dealing with solo opponents who don't stand close enough to wall stun them. But between Slows for days and a miniature summoner 7 , i'm willing to take the single target weakness.

Do you guys have any changes for his Caretaker's Shrine (e.g., mana cost, time to charge, amount healed, max shrines active)? I feel like the shrine does not make enough of an impact in the laning phase for its cost at the moment.

Eeyore2 votes

How about:

  • Cosmic Binding
  • Now applies a knockdown, similar to Event Horizon, Nether Grasp, etc. No longer can Rocket Jump stretch the chord a couple thousand units. You could go one further and have it also "yank" enemies in a fixed ranged of the anchor (this wouldn't apply "airborne", as with Gravity Field).
  • Magical Journey
  • Quality of life change for Quick Casters: Magical Journey will now show range indicators by default (i.e. the ability goes off on-release instead of on-press). Using it on Quick Casting should feel similar to Varus/Vi/Xerath - you can hold the button down, line it up and then let it go.
  • Tempered Fate
  • New Passive: The number of Chimes spawned every 50 seconds is increased by 1 / 2 / 3 (total: 3 / 4 / 5). This pushes the acquisition time of 150 to ~40 minutes down from ~60 minutes. The issue with Bard's passive at the moment is that compared to Thresh, Lulu, Sona, etc, with similar passives - they all reach level 18 long before his passive does anything close to comparable damage, even if he's also level 18.

I followed the Q&A for Bard but I didn't see any response: how does Bard's Q actually work? When I read his reveal I always assumed "searches for secondary targets" was flavour-text and that the ability was functionally identical to Light Binding/Baleful Strike (and that's how its in-game tooltip implies)... however, I have seen a lot of instances where the tether goes off at odd angles to stick to walls (just yesterday I saw the tether hit a wall completely perpendicular to Bard/his target, as if he was playing Vel'Koz or something). Does the ability actually function like Double Up? Does it actually "search" for secondary targets if there's no-one behind them?

If not, could that work as a tweak to the skill? A mini-Chain of Corruption. "Bard hurls a bolt of cosmic energy that connects with the first nemy it hits, dealing magic damage and slowing. A tendril then extends from the target to bind to a nearby enemy or nearby terrain." (There would be a maximum acquisition radius and slightly larger tether radius). Heck, you could make the tendril last a fixed length of time and continually try to find an anchor, so it adds an element of area of denial.

Apollocliptic1 votes

Don't know about the cosmic binding one, but maybe something similar, or if the spell only hits champions, it stuns if it hits terrain or other units, but it tethers to a fixed point if it doesn't, stopping the enemy chasing, but giving them options to escape, maintaining Bards non aggressive kit.

I suggested a similar passive on E, but I guess it could work on R. Maybe instead, Chimes spawn more often with E, but meeps spawn more often with R?

Wullf1 votes

quicker respawn of Meeps - great mana restore per chime - why not, but I dont think it is needed. Base stats - great if it is base HP Respawn place of chimes - good, it is not nice to have several chimes in enemy jungle before 5 min.

But main problem I encounter while playing him is his Q. It has short range It's projectile is slow Actual width kinda seems more narrow than width of visual effect. And targeting of second target is ridiculous. Right now second target can be almost 90 degerees to the first one and still be targeted by the spell. This makes stunning enemy champ behind minion wave almost imposible. (though range and/or projectile speed would change that)

simply put, Q needs to be more reliable.

I was playing Bard against Morgana and it seemed so unfair that she had similar Q with range many times longer, width wider and CC shorter (though it is stun against root)

These are the buffs I would personally like to see:

(1) Slightly faster Meep respawn during laning. Bard currently has an extremely low threat potential in the early laning phase (which is exacerbated by the lack of any offensive power spike when he grabs his W and E). I'm fine with him having a lower threat potential than other supports (because of his utility) but it feels a bit too low in his current state. The Meep respawn rate doesn't feel like much of an issue once laning's over, because you're able to carry multiple Meeps and skirmishes don't usually happen that quick in succession.

(2) Adjusted Meep spawn locations during laning. I've noticed that Meeps will often spawn based on your location and position relative to the river. This has led to some very difficult Meep spawns in the first five minutes in the game, especially if I'm scouting for jungle invades. This (usually) makes me hit my first few passive levels later, which makes laning much more difficult because of how important the first few passive levels are. I've actually found myself often waiting by the T2 tower to make sure the first two Meep clusters spawn in favorable locations, which is not really helpful for my jungler and team.

(3) Adjust Bard's Q targeting slightly. I'm not quite sure if Bard's Q is just a straight skillshot, or the second tether has some targeting algorithm (similar to Miss Fortune's Q), but I've had some occasions where I manage to tether a second target that I didn't want (usually a minion) when I thought I was aiming Bard's Q at a different target and angle. This isn't a huge issue, and doesn't happen frequently, but it's surprising and disappointing when it happens. I think his Q is fine otherwise.

(4) Adjust Bard's ult speed slightly. I'd like Bard's ult speed to be increased just a little bit (~.25 seconds) and his ult indicator (to allies and enemies) be adjusted proportionately. I've been able to do some very interesting and exciting plays with his ult, but it currently feels a bit more unreliable than it should be, especially with its higher cooldown.

The other buffs you've mentioned (base stats, mana per chime) are nice, but I don't feel like they're much of an issue. I feel like Bard's base stats are comparable to other supports in lane (especially after runes) and I think that Bard is appropriately punished for spamming his heal in lane (he doesn't have mana issues otherwise).

Thanks for taking time to comment on my post, I didn't think it would receive this much attention haha. I think you guys took the right approach on not overly buffing him, because people are still in the process of learning the champion. I definitely think something needs to make him more viable and I'm looking forward to what you guys do. I know you won't neglect a champ, especially a new one so I'm just going to wait until things change for Bard before I go ahead and try him in ranked. (God forbid my team flame me for picking Bard haha).

Might I suggest change where the cursor will change when hovering over one of Bard's Shrines or Magical Journey? Maybe in the case of the Shrines, a way to indicate "This is a thing that needs to charge, and will be more effective when it fully charges." I've noticed the issue of people either have no idea what to do with Health Shrines, or they pick it up immediately without letting or charge.

My thoughts are, a way to show to an ally "THIS IS A THING YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO INTERACT WITH AND IT WILL HELP YOU" would go a long way in helping allies work with Bard, who DOES need a lot of communication to work effectively.

You know what would be funny, a kalista style bonding, where Bard uses his musical abilities to rally the team, everytime the bonded adc targets an enemy, they get like musical graphics highlighting them. Now the whole team immediately know who the target is, and can focus together. Something similar to that as a buff to his communication moves, like a ping unique pings "I will place a magical journey here" highlighting the end point with the start point as soon as he presses the button, warning allies that there is a better route when chasing or escaping. In fast paced games you just don't have time to ping these things.

Info on the shrines is unnecessary because people will learn that in time (maybe showing the timer until it's fully charged though), but special pings for his magical journey like they did for Reksai's ultimate, outside of that, it's down to the player to quick ping their intent to gank or use an ultimate.

On a side note, should players be able to customise their pings for certain commands (like hold shift for custom ping message) like maokai can ping "I will route Nidalee in 5" or "run I am baiting" for champs like reksai who knows he can escape if he is last to leave a bad engage, or "help I've got barrier" for champs like volibear who look like they're about to die but drop a barrier that buys time for their passive and suddenly drop an ultimate on the foolish team focusing the tank

Any chance of changing his heal in some way? It costs such a large amount for such a low heal, even when it's been down for 10 seconds it's only about as good as others, and you have to wait for it and you need to keep it someplace safe and you need them to walk over it and for all that you get 70 at level 1. Taric does 10 less instantly that ALSO heals himself. I mean, half the time I contemplate if it's even worth it to put a point in his heal at all. Kayle too, heals for just as much, it's instant and the MS buff lasts longer but isn't as strong.

One suggestion I remember reading was for it to heal a % of health if it's been down the full 10 seconds.

would it be possible to give bard bonus damage every 5 meeps instead of every 10? like say every 5 meeps gives him 10, but every 10 meeps gives a bonus 5. so its still 25 damage on 10 meeps with a smoother scaling. and/or make the meeps travel with his auto attack, and not behind it? Because the way I see it and i dont think im wrong, but Bard should start with relic shield and not coin so that when he does roam he isnt missing out on the gold from not being near dying lane minions but the massive delay on his auto hitting and the meep hitting makes last hitting exceptionally rough.

One of the complaints a friend of mine always has about Bard is how little experience the chimes give. Even when his roams are successful, Bard still ends up underleveled compared to what he'd be at if he had not roamed.

tofutime3 votes

His ult dealing AOE damage is a pretty nonsensical buff. Considering you're a support who isn't building damage this won't even do much for him. Think of Janna's tornado for instance. Do people use it for a disengage/knockup or do people use it for the damage? If the damage was taken off of Janna's tornado, not much would have changed on her and people would still pick her. Also think of Nami's ultimate. Same situation here. If you took the damage off of her ultimate, people would still pick her. Her ultimate's damage is not what makes it strong. If you put base damage enough on bard's ult for it to be significant then it'd be OP.

There are 2 options I think bard needs in order to be completely viable: 1.) he has to be tankier. Higher base HP and health per level stats. His Q is short ranged and requires him to be put in a dangerous position. Throwing a meep also requires him to get in a bad position. 2.) His Q needs to be more reliable. It's a very slow skillshot and very short ranged. Either the speed needs to be faster or the range needs to be longer. I don't think it'd be too much to ask if he had Morgana Q range. Either that or the skillshot should be as fast as Elise's stun. If they are going to make him so squishy, they need to make his CC easier to land.

One of these two buffs need to happen and that would put him in a relatively good place.

KR LEE S1N1 votes

I think what you have suggested would be a good alternative as well, more health and an easier q to hit would definitely make him more viable and worthy in team fights.

I've started a poll to ask whether a bard buff should focus on his "roaming" "tankiness" or "Power", personally I think improving his cc and roaming would be best, but I think making him tankier is a nice alternative

I feel like Bard's identity is in roaming (regardless of how effective he really is at it). Each one of his abilities is conducive to a roaming playstyle.

  • Q is akin to Annie/Morgana/Thresh style roaming where you make picks in mid-lane when your ADC has frozen lane in a safe position.
  • W brings map-wide sustain for the laning phase. Soraka somewhat fits this, but Bard's mobility actually allows him to do so in a faster amount of time.
  • E facilitates more effective jungler ganks.
  • R range allows you to make long-range clutch ults when you are warding/collecting chimes.

Q range or missile speed definitely needs to be looked at, but I feel like his W should be given higher priority. His W feels lackluster and for a support whose hard CC is very conditional, it needs to be bumped up to be just a level below Soraka's sustain potential instead of a high cost low heal.

I'm against this idea. If you don't like support, then don't play it. If you don't like Bard, don't play it. There are plenty of supports who can be aggressive. Not everyone of them needs to be. Bard is a support-oriented champ. Play Brand if you want to be a Mage in the bot lane.

Release Yasuo had less than 40% on release while being really overtuned with that lvl18 720 shield that lasted 2 seconds. Same thing with Azir, however he did have a lot of bugs that made him weaker. Same with Kalista. Being a champ that's so different from the rest it takes a while for people to pick him up as no experience on any other champion will help you play him effectively. Unlike Brand for example, if you have played Lux before it won't be that difficult to figure out how to effectively play him.

BottleCapster2 votes

He's only been out for like 2 weeks, and he has one of if not the Most difficult skillshot to use effectively in the game, as well as the first "Proper" Friendly Fire mechanic in the game. I've been playing Bard nonstop since his release, and I gotta say, i think he's actually in a really good spot. His damage isn't amazing, but what support's is late game? Good use of Q and Meeps give him actually a nice amount of poke damage, and his Ult makes setting up jungle ganks a Breeze. Tbh i just think bard's a difficult champ to learn, and his winrate reflects that

Since when did Jannah have amazing damage lol. Yes Nidalee, lux and Sona can have dangerously high damage for supports, while kayle and karma are limited in the sense of damage verses utility and other support mechanics. I don't think morgana's damage is amazing as a support, while Taric's damage only applies if you stand there and take it to the face, typically he is easy to work around. Bard should not be a damage dealing champ, and should be most compared to Jannah, except his CC is nowhere near as good. Give him a slight cc buff, either improve reliability of Q, or add additional mechanics to W or E (a passive on E, or an Aura from W shrines) His ultimate should not do damage, and riot is not going to go in that direction, at least not any time soon

Wullf2 votes

Janna? Damage? And Soraka? rly? Why didnt you mention main damage supports: Zyra and Velkoz, followed by Lulu

Kinda makes me think you are John Snow.

BottleCapster2 votes

Dedicated supports?

First off, let me just mention the fact that in your list of supports you've primarily mentioned off supports, and conditional damage champs. Late game, Mage supports can deal damage yes, because their MAGES who've found a place in the bot lane. Also you list Soraka, Janna, and Taric on your list of late game damage dealers? Damage is not a forte of any of those champs, and Taric's is conditional at best.

Sona is another territory because tbh i've always felt that Sona is too incentivized to build pure AP or mage rather than support, especially with the crazy amounts of damage and utility she gets from it.

Kayle support is all but dead, and Karma functions fantastically in every lane. Basically end game, support damage is suppose to taper off, unless you're playing a mage support a la Annie, Zyra, Vel Koz etc.

In regards to Bard, tbh the range buff on the pbe is everything i could have wanted save maybe a W buff to deal with its lackluster max heal and Excruciating mana costs, He's really close to balanced, people just need to learn how to play and play with him, and these changes will help him be a little less risky.

Apollocliptic1 votes

I found a simply way to buff him that would make him much cooler without breaking him or making him too aggressive: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/12lHN7Uk-bard-a-simple-change-to-make-him-viable

Focus on improving his W (giving it a root mechanic that reveals and scales with the heal) and giving his E a passive to increase the spawn rate of Meeps or chimes (and maybe, just maybe a passive speed buff)

If chimes give him gold, and E increases the speed they or Meeps spawn, or if E passively increases the gold you get from collecting them. Roaming bard could build better and smart careful play could make him a strong global support the builds damage into the late game anyway. Read the linked post and tell me that wouldn't make him a much more viable champ

IForgot2buyBoots1 votes

Actually, here's an interesting idea: Nature's Retaliation: When a shrine has reached its full potential, the spirits of nature become angry when that shrine is desecrated by a foe. A vengeful meep joins Bard if a full growth shrine is desecrated; this meep does not count towards Bard's maximum number of meeps, but vengeful meeps are impatient and strike first before ordinary meeps get their turn.

I think that his ult dealing damage to enemies and healing allies would be helpful. Also if his e could be used as a skillshot knockback on champions when it doesn't hit a wall. So he could use his e in a skirmish bot lane.

Apollocliptic2 votes

I think his ultimate is the best part about him, leave it alone and buff his other skills. Adding a damage buff to allies who use his E, or a passive affect for being near him from E (Movement speed would be too much like Jannah, but attack speed buff might be nice, enhancing his own passive application and the adc - plus no other support has it and it would stop it from making him an aggressive play support)

Volt Cruelerz1 votes

Alternatively, what if he fired his gate like a skill shot and it could deal damage and knock back if it hits an enemy before a wall?

If anything I found it refreshing that they tried to finally make a support that isn't about the damage. Seems like they always have to sacrifice the possibility of even more utility in order to appease the people who "gotta get dem mad deepz and frag deeze neewbs".

Honestly I'd love a world where Bard not only had no damage on his Q, but the damage from his passive was removed as well and instead he was made the ultimate utility support.

It would be perfect, you wouldn't have to worry about him being abused in the wrong lane/jungle and Riot could finally just balance a support based purely on being a support and not because some jackwagon tries to go mid lane with him and ruin it for rest of us.

Ok here are some suggestions.

  1. give him atleast as much spell damage as janna (considering she is the lowest damage support in the game.)

  2. give him atleast as much healing as alistar (considering he is the lowest healing power champion in the game.)

  3. give him atleast as much roaming power as soraka (seeing as how soraka has a 40% movespeed buff when running to low hp allies, which is still the worst roaming ability in the game but better then both wall AND chime speed.)

  4. Give him atleast some form of ultimate (seeing as how if you gave zhonyas a 1 second delay, not a single mage in the game would ever buy it again, yet you thought an aoe non-discriminate zhonyas was a good idea)

Right now he is the worst at everything he offers in the game. He isn't even average at anything. He has the stupidest long cooldown on his meaningless skillshot heal. He has a stupidestly long cooldown on his horrible damage CONDITIONAL STUN.

Brand has a 2 second stun on a 3 second cooldown at max cdr. JUST SAYIN

His wall move needs to only work for his allies so you can atleast attempt to justify the ability at all.

Additionally, besides making his wall move only work on allies it also needs

  1. only works for allies

  2. max speed for the duration at rank 1 (no longer scales speed

  3. cast range begins at 100 range. Gains 500 range per rank.

Now he can do a 2100 range skill shotted path if he is good enough which WOULD make for some amazing plays.

Right now it is certainly not an escape and DEFINITELY not a gank ability.

why? Because the portal shows, then 4-5 seconds later the champs pop out because rank 1 portal is basically base movement speed.

Allow Bard's Shrines to damage enemies who take them. It has the option to be a heal for an ally, or damage to an enemy. Perhaps for both, give a better boost to the effect (or another effect) once fully charged up.
