Vel'koz is really strong

I walk back into lane fresh. Vel'koz hasn't backed for items yet. It's under my turret, sieging the fort. As I approach, I get hit by E, Q, and then it ults. I die. I know that I played like an idiot for running into its spells, but the laser does sooooo much damage. Is it a good pick atm? And may I get some advice on how to avoid its laser?

Pretty funny looking champion, like a flying spaghetti monster or a three-tailed sperm, so I didn't take it seriously. I think there's where I screwed up.

if you are playing mobile champs get behind him during his ult.

coming from a vel'koz main. best thing you can do is probably start the match off with boots against vel'koz. the movement speed will help you dodge his skill shots. champs that i have a hard time dealing with are zed, leblanc, ahri, lux, fizz, akali, and syndra.

however, if your playing a really expeirenced vel'koz player they will more than likely anticipate mobility abilites to get in. so if i was you i would wait and try to bait his E. as its his only move that can save him in a bad situation.

when laning against vel'koz you have to remember that he is one of best true damage dealers in the game. avoid proccing his passive at all costs cuz it hurts like hell. best counter to this is to focus on items that give mr and health. as mr will reduce damage of his abilites while health will somewhat counter his passive as you cant prevent true damage so only more health helps in that situation.

items like item 3156 , item 3001 , item 3091 , and item 3137 are essiently useless as most of vel'koz's damage comes from his passive which deals true damage. you can buy them still if you want to reduce his base ability damage to you which will help a little but not alot.

Make sure to pick a champion with hard CC or mobility. His ult is really strong but easily denied with any form of stun, knock up or knockback and even silence. Popular champions like annie, syndra, viktor and even Veigar can shut him down easily. If you can deny his ult velkoz is pretty fragile if you all in him.

Velkoz is a really strong pick but his kit has A LOT of counter play to it

Thing is he scales better off levels than items, I believe most mages do, mainly avoiding his spells is the counterplay to vel'koz because he is a combo mage whereas his ult will only deal true damage if he lands his abilities 3 times.

So grab item 1001 on your first back, this will help you deal with his ultimate, and his skill shots, be wary of the angle in which his Q can travel.

Basically his Q is one of the few unique skill shots, this one in particular travels perpendicularly where if he collides with an object or reaches max range it will then split travel horizontally which can be used for trickshots, so be mindful of that. I consider his Q the most important skill shot to avoid when facing Vel, it's his poke and a slow which is good for setting up the rest of his combo.
