Newbie with Questions on how to best play for me

Hi Guys,

I'm a relatively new player and I'm wondering if anyone would have some advice on how to best enjoy the game for me.

I have a bit of a unique situation in that I usually play when I'm working my part-time job (working as a medic) or putting in time at the volunteer fire department I run with. Now, these are both very low volume stations with about 2-3 runs per day so in the past, when I've played other games, I just simply take a loss if I have to get up and go somewhere. After all, it is a game and it's just meant for having fun--who really cares about the W-L's at the end of the day. Now, the only other similar game I play is Starcraft so this is not a big deal. However, I'm cognizant of the fact that in LoL, I'm playing with other humans so I don't want to ruin their experience.

My goals of playing the game are this:

  • Have fun
  • Get better with a few choice characters
  • Explore as many aspects of the game as I can (new characters, runes when I get to that level, some cool skins, etc) by earning as much IP as possible

Here is what has been suggested to me so far

  • Only play Co-op vs AI when at the station (so that way my team can still win even if I have to go AFK)
  • Play normal mode to earn as much IP as possible when I'm not at the station
  • If I can find 4 friends who understand my situation and don't care, play Co-op vs AI with them or normal with them
  • If I can find 4 friends at the station to play with me I can play whatever I want at the station because we'll all be in the same boat together.
  • NEVER play ranked at the station (not a problem for me because I'm no where near that level)

Does this sounds reasonable to the rest of the community here? The only thing I'm wary of is if Co-Op vs AI would be a better way to earn IP vs. Normal PvP since with Co-Op vs AI you seem to almost always win, but with Normal, your win rate is closer to 50%. The rest seems reasonable as to how to affect the other players the least.

Also, does anyone know at what point does the leaver-buster system start to affect you? I've played about 150 games at this point and have only had to leave twice--once I had to help move some trucks around in the bay and got back before I was disconnected (gone like 3 minutes tops), the other was an emergency run where I left for a good hour. I'm guessing that a leaving ratio of 1:150 is acceptable, and if so, could I even play Normal or Ranked (when I get to that stage) without penalty even if I do have to leave once every 100 games or so?

Thanks for all the input! It's been a great game and a great experience so far!!!

First of all, thank you for what you do. I really respect you for your career path, and I appreciate what you do in your community.

Secondly, play Normals. For your situation at the station, don't play ranked ever, since those matches actually mean something to other people. But don't only play against bots, you aren't improving that way.

Thirdly, if you're concerned about the effect that leaving would have on your team, I would suggest becoming a support or jungle main. Every team member is crucial to winning a game, but if one teammate absolutely had to leave (and it happens in your case), the one that I believe would be the least harmful to your team in the game would probably be the support. Besides providing CC, peel and maybe some stats (which are important, don't get me wrong), you don't do much else, and some raw damage & poke can still win a teamfight, even with no cc. The jungler is probably less of a necessity late game since most of them tend to fall off, so if you absolutely know that you'll be able to play for the first twenty minutes, get your lanes fed and then let them carry themselves if you have to leave. Also, due to your time limits, I'm guessing that short queue times are in demand for you. With my experience, these two roles have the shortest queue times and usually get you paired with people who want to play their roles, so less dodging.

Finally, LeaverBuster gets you if you do leave waaaay more frequently than you say you are. Usually after missing two games in a row, it gives you a penalty, and after that for ~2 weeks, leaving a single game gives you a penalty.

Good luck!
