Players should consent to Kalista's spear!

IcyPepper··80 votes·3,081 views

Honestly never liked the whole "click on champion to bond them to you for an entire game" mechanic. How long does a Thresh lantern, a Bard ult, an Anivia ult, and so on last? Something as permanent as that should be consensual (just like real life relationships!).

Right now, it can be abused by dumb Kalistas spearing you in lane or in the jungle when enemies are around. Free damage for the enemy, I guess.

If it was consensual, it could show a thing or two. People could decide whether or not they want the spear: the jungler for better ganks, or the support for better poke. Supports that don't poke a lot might decide it's better for the jungler, and so on.

The only con of making it 100% consensual is that sometimes people just don't want to be Kalista's bitch partner for the entire game. That should say something about her design, Riot. It really does say something.

Ask for consent and respect the reply. Any answer other than an explicit "Yes" is a "NO". And always use a Condemn when ulting. Help promote healthy Ultimate activity in fountain today.

Vi and Cupcait1 votes

Wait... You're telling me that using a Condemn when ulting isn't just a once in a blue moon thing I'm supposed to do to spice things up??? O.O

Simple changes to fix Kalista's soul bound problems:

  1. The ult can not be cast if it will interrupt an allies channeled ability
  2. Kalista's target for soul bound gets a pop up similar to surrender vote to decide if they want to bind
  3. Kalista can purchase new spears throughout the game to rebind(cost increases with level)
Deep Terror Nami1 votes

For #3, you can. They are always free, and you can grab one from the shop at any time and bind someone else.

UberAffe1 votes

last time I tried it didn't actually change who I was bound to, but maybe that has been fixed by now. But even so I think there should be a cost tied to switching who you are bound to.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

It was broken at the beginning, but I just checked it in a custom bot match and it works fine.

The cost is that you can only hold 1 on you at a time, and don't have space for one at full build!

Retillin4 votes

Did you check in the first 5 mins of the game? I thought the problem was that after a set amount of time you can no longer change soul bound.

  1. Allies cannot be pulled if stunned/rooted/suppressed
  2. Kalista stops attacking while stunned/suppressed

Apparently in PBE it used to be optional but nobody would accept it so basically Kalista was ult-less

Also it's usually better on the support anyway because even if they don't poke or want to be thrown into the enemy Kalista can activate her ult so they get pushed to safety.

Everyone is always like "but i dnt wanna get thrown 2 the enemy lol" like...............you can control where you wanna go.

anyway personally i hate her ult and reckon she should get a new one all together but i don't see the point of having the option not to accept

IcyPepper4 votes

Part of it is consent, giving the support the free will to click it is better than forcing it. Most supports, if they want to win and the Kalista just asks, would probably just take it at this point after her release. Less toxic, makes supports feel less like Kalista's bitch and more like a partner. Doesn't change much, but feels better.

And that PBE example... that should have told Riot something. The solution should not have been "Hey, nobody is taking the spear... Let's force it on players!" Should've been a clue that Kalista could use some changes.

Should've been a clue that Kalista could use some changes.

It's a CertainlyT champ. If she's fun for anyone but the player, THAT'S the clue there's something wrong.

A half decent player won't be phased much by a Kalista trolling them with her Ult (even if she's taking them out of a channeled Ult, they're getting a knockup/Zhonya's and free reposition out of it).

On the other hand, if the bound person is the troll they can make her Ult worthless or bait her by just using it to leave instead of the intended engage.

The only people that don't like this are the ones that fail to react. I completely disagree on every point any of you guys ever make about her Ult needing to be accepted.

MajorPain91 votes

As a support there are countless options where I am engaging that the adc doesn't realize is beneficial to us. Wether its because Mid / Jungler are coming for ganks, or to distract bot from an obvious objective secure (ie; Dragon) the fact that another player can DECIDE what my character is doing is completely unacceptable in solo play. If Riot wants to keep this for ranked teams fine, but get it the hell out of solo.

I wish the game gave me a warning when Kalista is about to ult. The number of times I've clicked to move during the ult and not gone where she wanted me to is really high. No matter how many times I ask for a ping before it goes off.

If there IS a warning, I've yet to see it.

It gives you a good second before you can actually fire, and the screen tints to a light green. Be more aware of when you're being sucked into the Kalista player.

Trolls. Terrible trolls.

IcyPepper3 votes

Idiots right before giving a leash (no vision on enemy).

At tower, giving the enemy (if not giving a leash) free time to throw a skillshot.

Trolls.

Drunks.

Generally unfun people. At least Bard ults don't last an entire game.

aaronconlin2 votes

At the very least it should be able to be removed, so you can use it with your support early game then someone else later in the game

MacDthree1 votes

cant you buy another spear in the store? or did it used to work like that? I've never played Kalista, so excuse my ignorance. But I know for a fact I've seen people switch the bond.

CudyDarkyz1 votes

From what i hear, you can only switch in the first 5 mins of the game.

PoisonedPeace2 votes

ITT: Incorrect use of the words bond and bonded.

Kalista binds champions. The past tense is bound.

IcyPepper1 votes

My mistake. ;~;

ShaftyMegee2 votes

They had that in pve. The reaction was to not accept it. So kaliata was left without a passive (not that her kit isn't over loaded enough)

IcyPepper1 votes

Really should have said something about Kalista's kit. How the hell did they come to the conclusion that making it non-consensual was the solution?

ShaftyMegee2 votes

Honestly man I don't know... maybe they were in a rush to push the champ out? Or they just didn't want to take the time to send her back to the pve with a new description of her kit. Who knows... but I also think that forcing a spear onto someone and essentially making them your bitch isn't too good of a kit

1st-pickers who don't ban Kalista are promoting rape culture.

Remember, always ask first! Consent is hot!

Kalista Sona, I know you're squishy, but I promise to only use my passive to compliment your pokes and my ultimate to save you. Sona ... Kalista If you ping first and consent to an offensive ult for your ult, I'll do it. But it's up to you. Sona ... Kalista Do you accept my spear, and with that an inseparable bond for this game? Sona ... Kalista Please Sona, I don't love you because I need you. I need you because I love you. Sona ... Kalista ...

Teemo Make out already!

Any one hate how if she does bind to you, it's impossible to get cs when she around since her passive w gives her all the credit for the minions kills?

IcyPepper2 votes

To be fair, most of the farm should be going to her, but it does kind of come across as enforcing the 0 cs support meta.

On the bright side, it does make poking supports' poke a little stronger.

Hey, even Satan has his nice moments.

Methran1 votes

the problem with most kalistas I've seen at my level is they always bind to the support.

what's the point of binding soraka when u have sejuani jungle ? If I throw myself into the enemy team I'm soooo dead (as soraka). plus most support don't AA much (at one point if u try to AA the ADC and he retaliates he hurts u a lot more than u hurt him) so the bonus damage isn't always relevant.

kalistas should think much of who to bind.

and for her ult, it's a bit like bard, it works a lot more with team commnication. and u don't have that when u soloQ

MacDthree2 votes

the passive that comes with who you're bound to. Makes her do more damage when they both attack the same thing or something. so it'd be stupid to be bound to the jungle all early game when she can switch it once laning phase is over.

Hèntaî 1 votes

I usually only ult to get the supp out of combat XD

JedenVojak1 votes

They just need to make the spear so the recipient (whosoever that is) needs to click on it to bind with her. That would solve the problem quite soundily.

IcyPepper1 votes

That's basically what this thread is saying.

It's not like Thresh clicks on you with his lantern, now does he?

I WISH I could click on other players with Thresh lantern. Like, just take the lantern, wtf.

Your idea would never work. There are far too many trolls that would just say no, severely hurting Kalista's gameplay.

IcyPepper1 votes

You do realize that it's not just the support who can bind with Kalista, right?

And I don't think it's trolls that would be saying no.

Edit: ...Er, was I wrong? Bonding with a tank jungler isn't a terrible idea, and some non-trolls (especially squishy supports) just don't like being bonded to Kalista. Wait, no, some downvoting spree. Nevermind, apparently I have a reputation and pissed someone off.

SexyTaylorSwift1 votes

I would bet, as was the case with me, you were downvoted because it isn't very good to bind with someone that isn't support. You lose a lot of her kit if you don't bind with your lane friend.

IcyPepper1 votes

They went through every comment O_O

But that's not really a big deal, I view it as more humorous that someone actually went through all that trouble instead of just commenting their opinion.

Anyway, I'd say that at least 90% of the team it's best to link with your support both for their safety and the W passive. However, there are times where it might be a better choice to link with the jungler for a strong gap closer and teamfighting, especially when you have a squishy support that's more likely to be behind you rather than in front (Soraka doesn't trade aa's well against adc's, she's too squishy to throw at the enemy, and her starcall is easy to dodge. She could poke decently with Kalista, but it might be better to link with the tanky cc Sejuani).

It's a sacrifice, but frees up the support to roam a little more mid/late-game, and helps junglers with short-ranged gap closers to really get into the ranged carry's face. Probably best in either premade teams or if you're duoing with the jungler, as opposed to solo queue.

SexyTaylorSwift1 votes

The most annoying thing I find while playing against Kalista's ult, so I'm going to say it's the best part here, is when you manage to catch the support out, CC the fuck out of them, and Kalista can still pull them away. I feel like she shouldn't be able to pull in a CC'd teammate, sort of like Thresh's lantern.

You know, I think the simplest solution is to make the soulbinding ritual instant or at least significantly reduced. Wouldn't change much except prevent trolling. While the current ritual is thematically appropriate, it does make trolling possible.

Plus like on top of all that, it's pretty much part of her whole thing? like it's an "Oathsworn Bond" Bonds are something you agree to. both parties say yes, and you go your merry way. one says no, you gtfo. it's an oath. Her whole thing is about destroying betrayers, so why is it that she wouldn't even say "hey, you wanna be together forever and ever?"
