So people keep telling me the redemption is good, and it's obviously not the generic support item stats. The extra heal power is meh at best, especially considering how useless non-lifesteal healing is. The active is...weak? I bought the item a number of times, and it never felt like it had a meaningful result on a fight.
I have stopped buying it, but want to make sure there isn't something on this item that makes it the bees knees like people have been telling me.
You need to get better with using it then, it's amazing, stats are fine, but when you are using it properly, you are more or less making a zone that says to your opponent "If you are fighting here, you are going to be at a massive disadvantage."
The fact that it both heals and damages can turn the tide of a fight, but it does take proper skill and know how to utilize it.
You have to catch several teammates and several enemies in order to make it seem as strong as it is. If you don't get that to happen, it's going to seem weak. The same way a Bard ult seems weak if you hit one enemy with it.
the active can easily turn a teamfight when done right
i feel that 
is more powerful on supports who are enchanters who already build into healing buffs.
however i still build on tank supports while getting

Nope, not trolling.
The damage is ok, but it rarely seems to affect the fight. Things are usually already decided by the time it finishes casting that it's just a formality at that point. I can probably count on one hand the number of times it's made a difference in a fight in progress, so much so that it's more of a "you can keep pushing if you win" type effect.
I disagree Redemption turns the tides of teamfights.
In gold, I've saved so many bad fights that were engaged with that item alone.
