I would like to bring something up about Sona

This isn't about if Sona's weak or strong or not , but this is pointing out that there is an actual fundemental problem with her reworked kit

Right now, in Sona's current state with her current kit, Sona is performing better as a "build as much AP as possible, poke your enemies to death" champion instead of the AOE buff support with actual support items that she is supposed to be

As an example, Sona needs 200+ AP just to get 50+ on her W shield and heal

This is the average Sona build

https://i.gyazo.com/561c6ca65a972a29f848372f2b5e04a5.png

Sona basically has to build like a mage to find success, due to her current kit Sona players are finding the most success with this build, and Sona is basically shoe-horned into building it due to her current kit, she currently has a 54+ win rate, Sona is doing well being an AP hungry poke bot instead of what she's actually supposed to be, probably due to most of her power being front-loaded into her Q

Is this seen as ok balance-wise? That a support champion has to build tons and tons of AP on a support budget to actually do well? And is more relied on for chunking people's health rather than actually supporting?

Like, I feel like this is an actual legitimate concern that people who play her are trying to voice, and anytime they try to voice it, people automatically assume that people just want simple Sona buffs when that's not the case at all and there's a bigger problem in the background other than Sona being strong or weak or not

(Quite sorry if this post doesn't flow too well, just a bunch of thoughts I'm trying to put together in a post)

Sona is a tough cookie to crack Her base values on her spells are horrendously low and that is much more emphasized that she is a support champion, she relies a lot on AP because everything she has in her kit scales with it and to do anything visible at all, you need that massive AP number as well as front loaded damage items like Lich and Luden to play off her pretty meh damage ratios, but with those 2 items she becomes basically an assassin, add a deathcap in and her E starts to rival Udyr speeds, and she becomes very fun to play this way, like a true glass cannon, carrying as the support, looking at that damage delt to champions at the end and seeing Sona top everyone However when we give her very little AP, with full support items then she becomes the most boring champion in the game, "am I even doing anything", "I feel useless" comes to mind when I think of full support Sona

I personally don't think it's really a problem, we have Brand, Annie, Zyra and Velkoz all doing what Sona has been doing for a long long time, Sona has more team utility but all these other champions have way more CC and range, I really dont see the problem in a champion who can deal damage as well as provide some decent support too, as long as that support power does not rival other supports without damage, what I do not believe she is pulling off crazy healing/shielding values and haste values (since her E is half for allies)

Though I think I wouldn't be wrong in thinking she will be getting some nerfs soon, as for that I would be fine if they did it in the right area, and not some way that makes her fall off the grid again, but we shall see, Tahms allowed to exist as is, so screw it, Sona should for now

I have to agree with what you're saying, but there are only a few inconsequential inconsistencies.

probably due to most of her power being front-loaded into her Q

Hymn of Valor is factually amongst the weakest, least-damaging, worst-scaling spells amongst the entire support class. It's tied for the lowest base, its maximum potential is sub-par, its secondary active is melee-range(despite herself being ranged) and the bolts are uncontrollable and have a poor targeting system.

Now, take a second look at the 2 item builds and notice these: item 3100 item 3285

A pair of artificial scalings. "So what? Pretty much everyone buys Echo, the item is imba." Ah, but then what about Lich Bane? It's a sub-par AP item, only champs with shitty damage output need to build this EVERY game. Further supporting this fact in Sona's situation, when building Lich Bane her winrate skyrockets to 65% in the roughly 1/3 games she builds it. Considering her overall is only 54%, that means Sona WITHOUT Lich Bane wins an unimpressive 48% of games.

Yet in spite of this, the bleating sheep of these forums try to claim Sona is "good" when her numbers are being artificially inflated by Lich Bane. Truth of the matter is that she's just an overall shit champion, shit support, but is forced to stay this way simply because Lich is an OP item.

Sona also loves the new cdr that Sheen gives. I kinda wish I could build support support sona sometimes, its fun to do burst damage with Q, but id like to help my adc in other ways effetively.

(Am a Sona main myself)

Its so rare for a LoL player to used the word 'imba' and not 'op'

First of all, I'd like to say that I agree with you in how concerning it is when a champions is deemed strong due to the artificial scaling provided by certain items, and is a matter of conern regarding the future plans Riot will have on Sona's balance, which they anticipated only nerfs loom in the horizon. To your analisys, I'd like to add two additional items.

1- Luden's has become core on several mages due to the additional power it provides, but rarely does a mage build Lichbane among their items. That is because their play style does not involve frequent use of autoattacks, and in fact you'd prefer to remain as far away from the enemy as possible. On Sona, however, it is considered among the core items by many players, and that is because she will eventually perform an autoattack as part of her rotation , to use Power Chord Staccato. Lichbane is not only strong on her because of it's artificial scaling, but because Sona does not have to go out of her way to use it. Combine that with the auto attack reset that Power Chord offers, and we have a considerable burst damage capacity. Unfortunately, since half these forums are not aware that Sona can't do more damage after that, and start running away from her instead of taking advantage of that moment of weakness, her burst is usually the first thing nerfed whenever Riot looks at Sona, specifically Power Chord burst.

2- The second issue is the one mentioned by OP, about why she has the best results when building as a mage, considering the disadvantages of Q as damage skill. Sona simply doesn't offer the same level of utility other supports do. She has no pre 6 CC, and even then it's on a long cooldown. Her E is now mostly a self buff, with a very short lived speed increase for allies (old E was pretty weak, but late game it's short CD + aura made the entire team AND THE MINION WAVE travel a lot faster through the map), and the increase in CD made Power Chord Tempo less reliable. W's increased CD and mana cost no longer make her the siege support she used to be, and the shield needs loads of AP to be useful, that without mentioning that the short lived shield does not work well in synergy with Power Chord Diminuendo (before, a Diminuendo'd enemy would be hitting an enemy whose defenses were enhanced by aura buff; but now, by the time diminuendo hits the mark, the shield has already disappeared, so you can't have both elements working together). Due to this, most of what Sona can offer, at least until very late in the game, is damage.

The rework Sona went through only accomplished two things: Artificially increase her vunerability by reducing the AoE of her "auras" (like Sona wasn't already pretty much made of glass, as I remember her being 1 shotted quite often in MLG), and increase the amount of particles in her model, so DJ Sona and the following skins would look more appealing.

How is l ichbane a sup par ao item? It gives 80 ap 10 percent cdr mana and the ability to do 75 percent of your ap as damanage. Its basically like having another spell you can use every 2 seconds. Its got more damanage then ludens echo

GoodBoiPoints5 votes

its actually 50% i think he means that since it gives less AP, it is only better than an item that gives more AP if the champ u are buying it on has bad scalings. I personally agree, it is generally only bought on champions that would rely on burst, but have low/ unreliable damage, like sona.

The Yetii Rider19 votes

This has been a problem since PreSeason 3 with the introduction of scaling utility. Turns out when you build offense and defense with the same stat it goes really really terribly, who knew.

The change to make poke supports have lower bases but higher scalings sent literally all of them mid to try and get more gold to build their items, which got literally all of them nerfed, and then their job was taken by mages like Morgana and Annie.

The reason AP supports have been terrible for two seasons is that Spellthief gave too little gold to afford big ticket AP items (intentional so mid laners wouldn't build it) but AP support items just didn't give enough AP (intentional, so mid laners wouldn't build them).

After two years of tank supports ruling bot lane we FINALLY get a Spellthief that has decent stats and excellent gold generation...and people build it mid. So yeah, Riot was correct in their fear there.

All this tells me is that AP scaling utility was a terrible idea to begin with and it needs to be replaced so the poke supports can be safely buffed, but Riot doesn't like the idea of there being a special utility scaling stat you can purchase on unique support only items.

Spell Thief's went to the solo lanes after its buff because Frostqueen's passive didn't get disabled when a minion got killed.

Would you kindly not spread the myth of "tank supports rule bot lane"? There times when Janna, Soraka, Nami and Morg (and probably more) were strong to the point of being pick or ban.

We kind of got a pure utility scaling thing with Windspeaker's Blessing (and the 8% shield/heal increase), didn't we? It did give supports the freedom to go full utility. Some took the option some didn't.

Morgana is not nor has she ever been a support. She entered into bot lane because her insane ratios allow her to get away with lower amounts of AP and her Black Shield countered Thresh and Leona. She is a COUNTERPICK, not a pick.

Janna is in a similar boat. She is good because she counters engage supports, who are the meta, not because she's good on her own.

Soraka became strong after her rework. Before that, she did indeed go mid, and she did indeed get horribly nerfed.

Nami has never been good, you're just wrong about that.

Windspeaker's scales the base of the shield/heal. It's not an item, therefore it can't be balanced based on price or power. It has to be balanced based on level.

You can't control whether your team mates take the increased shield/heal (and most carries won't).

We need ITEMS that give increased power to peeling and utility that do not contribute to damage, and we need to separate utility scaling from damage scaling so that these items feel good to buy instead of "Well I could get that, but Deathcap gives me a better shield AND more damage"

Dengeden2 votes

I actually have to track down the games mid S4 where Nami was picked (on a regular basis)? Seriously? Janna was banned and picked right after passive got buffed, you're talking like I'm speaking in present tense. What you said about Morg is fair enough, even if she was blind picked at times. Soraka's always risen up when nothing was strong enough to kill her in lane (or when her defensive playstyle didn't gimp her team).

Scaling off of levels is technically like scaling with items, since levels increase your stats too. You can at least use the other mastery to increase the defenses you use on yourself.

They feel good to buy anyway, they're cheap and individually gold efficient. Sona is a special case because she can utilize the mage AP items so well. I don't think having an item that buffs up only 1-2 abilities a champion has (and nothing else or little) is a good idea. Shields and heals are already borderline OP. As are (anti-)movespeed items.

Remember that Windspeaker's only increases the base, though.

I believe that the strongest heal in the game (aside from Zilean's Chronoshift, which is just full Health anyway) is Soraka's Wish, which is 350 at max rank. So at level 16 with Windspeaker's you get an additional 35 healing per player healed (someone may be at base or out of the fight), which is a total of 175 additional healing in the best case. Admittedly, that's quite strong.

But Windspeaker's doesn't apply to Lulu's Wild Growth. It only gives Soraka 24 more heals on her Astral Infusion, only gives Sona 11 additional heals and 11 additional shields, only gives Nami 18 additional heals, it's not a lot.

I really wouldn't call Sona an APC with only one ability for damage. 3/4 of her kit is based around utility and too my knowledge she has always been intended to be a support first.

Using AP to scale utility is a mistake, and should never have been implemented.

Unless people are fine with Sona's current state of having to build AP to stay useful, then she needs another rework.

Until her Q gets changed she will have to keep building AP regardless. If her Q would get removed we might be able finally see some improvements.

If that's the case, how should it be changed? I still like her Q as some kind of damage spell, though.

Pre-rework Sona Q does almost same things upon activation, but doesn't chunk down people's health bars, for those that don't know.

Damage spells are fine, but targeted, bursty spells on a SUPPORT are not.

the only part that is "targetted" is the 200 (+50% AP) at max rank portion of it. That is not burst at all. She needs to go into auto attack range and auto attack you with her PC. Her entire "burst" comes from her passive not her Q. I love how people spew things like this like she is able to take out 70% of someone's health at 800 range. She needs to be fairly close to you for her to do her damage and it's very telegraphed when she is going to do it.

Amelie6 votes

This right here is why I stopped playing Sona completely... she used to be my main support. If you don't build AP on her, you feel incredibly useless. I don't want to play Sona as another AP poke/burst champion on my team - I want to transition from a poke support in lane to a teamfighting support with a great AoE ult that compliments the team with both utility items and abilities. But as AP Sona, your main focus is to empowered-Q people.

That's not really asking for Sona buffs, that's asking for the old Sona back... or at least a kit change. :\

RyzeRework2 votes

I feel the problem with sona is she does so much poke in lane from a safe distance and doesn't give up anything for doing it her poke has more range then an adc auto attack and after sheen her power cord q auto can force an adc out of lane she's a super squishy champion but has safety in her kit to eliminate the weakness with her heals and shields her running away and her poke. And the low numbers on her heal and sheild is because she heals 2 people and can sheild 5 people if the numbers were buffed you could prolly just play sona as a mana tank and just spam w all day. I think sona needs to get rid of her safety if she wants buffs on her w

Biffolo7 votes

"safety" Is one of the squishiest champions in the early game and needs to get within 550 range for half her q damage. Wat.

Safety as in she has speed up heals and sheilds and sense her q doesn't have a casting time u can q and run

yeah you can hit a q and run but that just means you aren't going to use her auto component which is where a good chunk of her damage lies. You aren't going to be doing anything to anyone with just the Q bolts unless you are that far ahead in the early-mid game. Her speed up is outright terrible until rank 4 which is pretty much lvl 17 since that's the very last skill she maxes due to how terrible it scales with rank and her shield + heal have such low values and cost so much mana that you will run out of mana quite easily even if you use it very conservatively. Sona blows up the instant anyone looks at her the wrong way, and if she miss positions even slightly she is dead. Sona is not a champion you should ever be saying has any sort of 'safety' since she has none

Having a sheild and a heal is saftey and the reason its low os because its a potential 2 person heal and 5 person sheild and a speed up is still a speed up and even more so when ur in the bot lane and the adc gets 385 speed with teir 2 boots

You're choosing to ignore the fact that she has both the shittiest heal AND the shittiest shield of the entire support class. They have a COMBINED value of 65 points, that combined value is weaker than EVERY shield other than Thresh's and is roughly equal to the average heal, only breaking even with Nami's. Then you have the fact that the "shield" portion only lasts 1.5 seconds, whereas literally EVERY other support shield is a minimum of FOUR seconds. Meanwhile, literally every single one of those heals and shields I compared her to has an additional BONUS effect on top of already having better numerical values than Sona. Does Sona's W have a bonus effect? No, it does not.

i really would like to know when sneaky said this since i watch him stream all the time and don't recall him ever mentioning this. Sona has an overloaded kit? she has damage on one skill, a weak heal/shield on another and a speed boost on another while having access to ONE of the following: a damage boost, damage reduction on a single target or a slow on a single target and then an AoE stun that is way easier to miss than you might think. She can almost one shot a squishy... if they have no mr from anything and no sustain whatsoever. Once Sona uses her Q she has no more damage other than an ult and using an ult on a single target is beyond stupid and can cost you a lot. She needs more than just lichbane to deal that sort of damage since lichbane's extra damage is not enough on it's own without more AP items.

Nami brings almost everything Sona brings with the exception of a shield but then she makes up for it by having a much better heal and then you have champions like Thresh. If Sona has an overloaded kit then pretty much every single other support also has an overloaded kit as well

Biffolo4 votes

The speed up?! That thing is terrible. it's 13%, which is 42 MS if you have 330, but it decays pretty quick making it very crap, couple that up with it's hefty mana cost of 65 and you can't do that much.

RyzeRework1 votes

So you have 372 while their adc has 330-320? Not to mention your speed up is also a slow down your heal and sheild also lowers your opponents damnage and your q can make your auto deal half an adcs hp with a q at level 1

Biffolo2 votes

It quickly decays. It's 372 for an incredibly miniscule amount of time. The slow is from your passive, not the spell itself. Compare it to other speed ups in the bottom lane and you will realize why I called it crap. Karma can shield and speed up in one spell, conserving mana, and a mantra q will chunk an adc incredibly hard. Is karma support op as well?

RyzeRework1 votes

Hey uh dipshit. Those alternate abilites are her passive. Her w in no case can lower damage, but her passive can. Learn the kit before you talk shit on it.

oh wow so much wrong in one post... i'm actually surprised. How is the enemy ADC with 325 (the lowest MS you can have)? did you take E at lvl 1? you aren't even going to have 372 MS without buying boots first you know? your E is giving you at most around an extra 20~25 MS for a very short amount of time and it's only a slow after you have used 3 other abilities, you aren't going to have your slow available every time you press E.

Your Q is not going to deal 1/2 of anyone's HP at lvl 1. Let's do some math shall we? passive at lvl 1 does 13 (+20% AP), your Q does 40 (+50% AP) and enhances your next auto for 20 (+20% AP) it also boosts your passive's damage by 40% if you used an ability 3 times so... that would make your passsive increase it's damage from 13 to 18. Let's add those things up shall we? 18+40+20+ auto damage (50 AD at lvl 1) let's also add spellthief which is 10 extra damage so in total it would be: 88 magic damage + 50 AD auto attack BEFORE resistances. Now add some AP let's say 30 AP at lvl one just for the hell of it. 55+25+26+10+auto attack damage = 116 magic damage + 50 AD AA... BEFORE resistances tell me how is this 1/2 of ANYONE'S HP at lvl 1? she might deal a little bit over 1/4th of someone's HP unless you really stack up so much AP in your runes to the point that you are so squishy that a few autos will take out the same amount of HP to you.

Your heal/shield costs so much to the point that is a huge detriment to use it in lane and should be avoided at all costs unless absolutely necessary. I love how people who never play Sona in their entire live come and speak like they know what they are talking about when in reality they are just spewing the same nonsense some other dude said without even looking to see if they were right or not

2 q autos? at lvl 1? without the passive? that is even more impossible and if you mean with the passive you do know that they are regening health right? and safe distance? her auto range is 550 which is average. Unless you are playing someone with 0 range abilities and a brain dead support there is no way she will just Q+auto you with her passive twice without some sort of retribution. I played cass the other day cause everyone said she was weak and went 13/7

people aren't saying she is weak, they are saying her rework is terrible since all she is now is an E machine gun thing and not a poison mage like she is supposed to be

I see a bronze build with no vision. Wonder how that would do in a challenger level game where your team is always in the blind?? Hmmmm with your logic you will solo lcs next year 1v5 every game. Just go glass cannon and complain sona is broke lets see how you do.

The build you're looking at is the most common build she has in Plat+.
