ARAM Balancing

Regardless of what anyone may or may not think, ARAM needs balancing. Why? It's "random" after all.

Let me make this clear for everyone, ARAM isn't random. I've played over 1000 matches of ARAM with the same champion pool I have now and one thing remains the same: Everytime you "reroll" a champion, there is a pattern.

For instance if I get a "tank"(in aram terms almost any melee hero) such as Udyr, 99% of the time my next reroll is Jax. This happens time and time again and it's easy to spot considering it happens once every couple of days. This isn't just one insignificant thing either because the same thing happens with Amumu, ill reroll to Garen, or Dr. Mundo.

Another thing that ISN'T random about Aram is the balance of comps. Why is it that all too often one team has an absurd amount of poke/damage/heal and the other team has an absurd amount of tank/melee? You'd think that would be a statistical oddity that happens maybe once every week, but yet it happens game after game after game. It may not be as cut and dry as it seems, but inevitably one team always has the advantage over the other. Let me go through my games and see for yourself:

Game 1 Our team: Teemo, Jhin, Tristana, Zed, Fiora Their team: Brand, Sivir, Sona, Veigar, Kayle Lost Out poked, out sustained, out damaged, out cc'd

Game 2 Ours: Ahri, Viktor, Bard, Morgana, Sivir Theirs: Wukong, Azir, Teemo, Yi, Rammus Lost Azir just flash-ulted, Wukong flash-ulted, Rammus flash-ulted to win after turtling until all CDs were up

Game 3 Ours: Xin, Xerath, Mundo, Blitz, Caitlyn Theirs: Ashe, Kennen, Ahri, Nasus, Mao Won Out ranged, kited them to death and they couldn't do anything.

Game 4 Ours: Tryndamere, Talon, Bard, Tristana, Pantheon Theirs: Donger, Lux, Darius, Jinx, Ziggs Lost We couldn't do a damn thing, nuff said.

Game 5 Ours: Blitz, Varus, Xin, Brand, TF Theirs: Akali, Mundo, Darius, Zil, Singed Won They couldn't do a damn thing.

Do you see a pattern here? I do. Every single one of those matches are lopsided heavily for one team. One team always has cheap champs that can 1v5 our the entire enemy team if they were good enough because of the ranged attacks and CC. EVERY. SINGLE. GAME is like that.

So what should the solution be? Well I wouldn't post at all if I didn't have an idea to fix this hot steaming pile of dung that I love so much called ARAM.

The solution to solve all ARAM problems: Make each team have one of each champion class that corresponds to a champion that the other team also has. Does your head hurt? It shouldn't because it's very simple. Step one is to classify each champion as Marksmen, Initiator/Fighter, Juggernaut, Tank, Mage, Healer, AD Assassin, AP Assassin, etc.

Heres an example:

Team One: Team Two: Blitzcrank(Initiator/Tank) Naut Ashe(Marksmen) Varus Veigar(Mage) Xerath Darius(Juggernaut) Mundo Warwick(Initiator) Attrox

Or even

Team one(A normally very oppressive bunch): Team Two(An equally oppressive bunch): Xayah Twitch Lux Orianna Ahri Fizz Jinx Miss Fortune Karma Jayce

This would fix ALL the problems that players will encounter balance wise in ARAM, there would be no more cheesy wins and epic salt from the guys that play the mode to win(myself included). All that needs to happen is for each team to have an equal advantage or disadvantage so instead it turns into a skill-based truly RANDOM mode instead of "oh their tean gets all the poke and we get the punching bags, what fun this will be." What if there was a game where every player ACTUALLY HAD a tank/jug? Or everyone had a marksmen/assassin/mage/healer?

TL;DR, if ARAM was made to where there were only 5 types or less of champions each player could have for that match, it would make ARAM balanceable and even (in my eyes) eligible for ranked matches. It means that atleast two players on each opposing team will get the same champion type (amumu vs nautilus for instance), or even 6 players on each team get the same champion type. You get the idea.

Why would this not be the fix-all for ARAM?

I agree that ARAM could do with some balancing, but not in that manner. Changes aimed at reducing the frustration around individual champs (Sona being the poster child of problem champs) would be a better solution. Restricting teamcomps by role, while somewhat improving balance, brings a number of additional problems. For one thing, not all champs with the same role are equal. Fizz in the above example should be building as a Tank, which wouldn't make sense for Ahri. Meanwhile Karma should be building Support, which Jayce wouldn't be doing. Secondly, a major skill in ARAM is being able to adapt to the situation, which clashes with role sorting. Whether Nasus is an AP Mage or an AD Juggernaut depends on the situation. Furthermore, role restrictions significantly reduce randomness of team comps, which conflicts with the spirit of ARAM.

All in all, filtering comps and champs by role would make ARAM less suitable for ranked matches. It makes the mode closer to SR-lite rather than being its own thing.
