What makes a good support?

When can I say that a support player is good?

I've played with alot of support mains and auto-fills and most of them were really good I think.

Recently though I've started seeing two types of supports:

  1. The engaging support: this support tends to poke and engage a lot putting a lot of pressure on the enemy adc. They help with securing kills and protecting the adc, essentially keeping me well and safe enough to be able to do my job as an adc without much danger.

  2. The Safe support: this support stays under tower. They avoid engaging in any way possible, takes the least risks and do anything they possibly can to stay safe and alive, even if it means being passive. They usually have little experience of team fights and their role in it and may miss their abilities more than hit. The good thing they have is a near perfect kda as they're usually away from danger. The bad thing though is that in nearly every game they play, they're adc is doomed.

With the first type of supports, even if they're not very good, I win most of the time. With the second type, I'm almost always in danger of harass, can't farm because I'm under tower and getting kills requires too much effort.

At first I thought the first type are better supports than the second type so, I've tried telling the second type what to do, when to engage and where to ward. I don't want to sound toxic, but they almost never listen to me instead they go on to play the same way as if I'd never said anything. (They also tell me to stop talking to them and let them play how they want and just play, but that's beside the point) I figured maybe that's a new playstyle for supports, to be very safe.

If that is a playstyle and not bad supporting, can anyone tell me how to deal with that? like how to play and synergize with them and stuff like that. [vlad-salute]

Farm under your tower, as if the lane is 1v2. Act like they are AFK, buy control wards whenever you go back (since they obviously won't even get a sighstone), ask your jungler to gank sometimes, so that they don't push 24/7 and feel a bit of pressure from him. And don't put yourself in danger (like, walking in range of a blitz / thresh Q, staying near a Leona, ...)

Thanks for the advice :D

Is this some kind of new play style or are they acting afk?

Nah but sometimes I play SR and when I don't get my jungle / support, I just go adc. I know some people have no idea what to do as a support, and think they're role is only to engage (yes, I've seen people buying doran ring). I usually just act like this and the lane ends up "good" (even CS / not feeding / getting some kills by the jungler)

nah what? not a new play style or not acting afk? or nah both?

It's not a play style, they just have no idea what to do, so they just don't do anything (and sometimes will try to chase low hp people and end-up getting gang-banged by the entire enemy team, and blaming your team for not following up)

It really depends on the lane matchup.

Like if I'm playing Nami support, and the enemy lane has Blitzcrank then I'm going to play back more instead of poking because I know one grab will be an Insta-death.

I had Sona and the enemy was Rakan one game and she played the same way

That's legit. Rakan has a solid pop-up and a strong charm after if he's past lvl6. Although sona usually pokes more, she was nerfed recently.

Anyway. It can be more complicated as well. Also, I was reading what dead flag blues had to say in their reply, and to be blunt, they have no idea wtf they're talking about.

Playing aggro all the time is just as bad as playing back all the time. You need to read the situation, assess the best way to move forward and act accordingly. If you are getting pushed hard then the enemy lane is going to burn through mana faster, potentially open themselves to ganks, and also be more likely to put themselves out of position, all of which give you the chance to pick one off and gain the advantage. But that means playing safe until the moment to strike presents itself.

Good communication between adc, supp, and jungle is key. And not just pinging for assistance repeatedly. If you see a pattern in behaviour that you can take advantage of then let people know.

So yes, playing back/safe is a legit style/strategy. But successful supports know when to push, when to hold back, and when to change tactics.

So you're saying she was a bad support?
