I need advice on being tanky.

I'm just going to get right into this. I never feel tanky. Never. I play TahmKench , I have a item 3748 , a item 3068 , and a item 3065 , and I get melted in six seconds, and that's including my E. On Olaf I have item 3742, item 3065, item 3812, and item 3110, and I die in moments. I don't get it. I'm not whining about how it's impossible to be tanky, I've seen people go tanky and survive for forever while the entire enemy team is wailing on them, but I just can not reach that level. I just never feel like I'm actually a tank. Just to reiterate, I'm not complaining about how this is an anti-tank meta or something. I'm just saying that I see other players building tank who proceed to 1v5 while taking tower damage for minutes while they wait for their team to follow up, but no matter what I do when I build tank, I get taken down in seconds. Could someone give me tips or advice on my issue? Can I get a speculative explanation of what is happening here? Thanks for reading this far, I guess.

It's not just getting tanky it is knowing when to tank what. If you tank everything you die in no time.

take the vladimir clip in this video 2:32 . This guy knows exactly what he can and can't tank and dodges everything he can't tank. He still takes a lot of damage, but by choosing what spells he get's hit by he get's this magical amount of tankyness.

They are most likely ahead and therefore have a better tank item to enemy pen item ratio. You probably arent getting ahead so you arent as tanky.

Also. you might just be blindly building defensive items instead of looking at their team.

So lets break this down.

Enemy Team comp. Darius LeeSin Orianna Caitlyn Lulu

In this case you want to finish your armor item first (unless Ori is balls to the wall fed and you need to get some MR so she doesnt fucking 1 shot you)

So my build pathing would probably be something along the lines of item 3742 item 3047 item 3065 item 3748 item 3071 item 3512

Now im more used to Jungle build pathing but Id probably run this in Top lane.

I have the same problem as you sometimes and I've figured out it's not a matter of how much you can tank but rather what your team does during you tanking that determines, in your mind, how much you tanked. Let me explain.

All champions, save maybe a full armor Rammus vs an all AD team, melt under team fire. There's no build that can just protect you from 5 champion's worth of focus.

However, this is where don't focus the tank comes in. If the enemy team focuses you as the tank, but your team wasn't able to capitalize on that and hit their carries in that time, you'll melt and the enemy team will still be 5 strong. You'll feel as if you couldn't tank anything.

When you tank 5, and your team jumps into action and hits their carries, suddenly, that 5 focus peels off. You're never the focus when your carries are shredding their carries, so suddenly you seem tankier because the 5-focus quickly becomes much less.

Even if they continue their focus, you die, but so do their carries so even though you got shredded, they lost more and you feel as if you tanked enough to make it happen.

It's mainly mentality but also partly the whole 5-focus decreasing as carries disengage from your team.
