That isn't how it works. An image as the first line of the thread will show up just fine (as seen here)

An image in the first line of the thread with [ ] in front of it (Which I believe means 'make this text link to this image', except there's no text) causes the image to appear in the thumbnail but not in the post. The only reason I know this is because I can always see the post in plaintext for a second when I first load in.

You put empty brackets followed by the link to the picture in parentheses. Ex.

You can also do this to make a link look like text. Ex. [Why hello there](Dunsparce picture link) turns into Why hello there

Also, the first image link in the post will be the thumbnail, so make sure you put it at the top.
