I need massive help learning Gangplank

So, I started playing Gangplank a little while ago, and what can I say. He is probably my worst champion. I either lose every single lane matchup or, if I get lucky against a stupid lane opponent, I may go even. I understand that he isn't an early game champion. But half the time I can't even get enough farm to get to late game because I get so zoned from creeps. It feels like every champion I play against does so much more damage to me early that they can just dive me over and over again until I'm like 0/5 and then there is no chance to come back. I know how to play late game champs that just have to farm early; I'm confident that that isn't my problem. Am I just garbage with Gangplank? Should I give up trying to learn him? Is he just really hard? Am I just trash? I really just don't understand my problem.
