It is ok for riot to make champs only fit in one role.

it is very understandable because they become ridiculously hard to balance. skarner was forced into jungle, but now he is a beautifully balanced jungler, one of the most balanced imo. then look at naut, he is ok at support, ok at top, and pretty bad at jg. trying to fit him in 3 positions has ruined his balance, id much rather have him balanced in one role. anyways just my opinion.

When Riot makes a champion, they generally have a singular role in mind for the champion. It's the community that runs with whatever they're given, and why ADC Quinn is now considered trolling, for some insane reason.

Nautilus, for example, was designed for the jungle. He happens to be pretty good at supporting, too. It's pretty nice to grab enemies and snare them with a single basic attack. Turns out ADCs love that shit. Who knew?

I beg to differ. the meta is stimulated BY off-meta picks, by pigeonholing champions you stifle diveristy and the meta stagnates. A stagnant meta creates creep (power, mobility) and promotes playing FotM. Playing FotM leads to a very small effective champion pool, and the same 15 champions every game.

A prime example of pigeonholing being a bad thing is Braum; a champion made specifically to be incapable of anything other than support by intentionally having no waveclear and a zoning ultimate that doesnt do much damage. You could make braum capable of being a solo laner, and a fantastic one at that, if you let his Q pass through minions. Its a small change, and it wouldnt make braum OP OP, but it would ENABLE diversity.

The OPTION to play outside the intended role and do the unexpected is what makes MOBAS interesting to watch and play; Who would expect lulu to actually be a fantastic jungler? Galio an ADC? Annie a jungler? Udyr a support? You wouldnt. And that surprise option is what can make or break games.

mf support?

mf support?

Takes a lot of effort and is a specific counter; AP MF isnt really viable since her rework. But support is like tank; anyone can be a support or a tank as long as they have some CC. Supports, however, cannot be anything other than support because of how riot pigeonholes.

The issue is not when champions can be played in multiple roles, it is when they are so good at multiple roles that the push out the champions that are only viable in one role from more than one of the roles they are played in.

Ezreal Jhin Kennen Quinn TwistedFate Lucian Graves Are all capable ADC champions who have been so good in some roles that they pushed out everyone else. Hell, for awhile, graves was the best jungler in the game. He still is top 5.
