The Current Meta and ELO (or MMR) Hell

For Carthage··16 votes·2,440 views

A lot of people refute the existence of ELO hell. You can call them stupid or ignorant, but fact probably stands that they've just not encountered it. And if you have never seen or experienced something, it can be hard to believe it exists, even if others claim it does.

Regardless of whether you believe it does or doesn't, the current meta is exasperating its existence (or, if you don't believe it exists at all, this is a nothing but lunacy). So let's go over how this works:

The past meta that we just got over was incorrectly referred to as the "assassin meta" - it wasn't so much the assassin meta as it was the "damage" meta. It was whatever champ could do the most amount of damage the quickest. Give it a few seconds thought - the same period where assassins were prevalent is also the same period where hypercarries became incredibly prevalent? That doesn't raise an alarm? How about Kha'Zix demolishing entire teams just because he couldn't be outdamaged and CC was hardly an issue to him?

Point is, this is the meta where the saying "carry harder" was spoken more than any other - because you could carry harder. It wasn't about what you could do for the team so much as who's carrying your team and whether or not they could outdamage the one carrying the enemy team. It's the same reason why if you were ahead you would build damage items and if you were behind you'd build tank - because if you were behind you weren't going to outdamage, so you might as well just soak up as much damage for the one on your team that could. If your entire team was behind, well, guess you were shit out of luck - unless you hit a power spike or the enemies played flat out stupidly, you weren't about to come back.

And that's how it was - a period focusing on individual play and power limits. If Akali got fed, that bitch was going to haul her team to victory like Jesus carrying the cross, and if Kha'Zix got fed it was a nuclear wasteland because he nuked entire teams. And you could viably "carry harder" in this meta, you could - if you went a champ that focused on sheer carrying potential, you could drag your team kicking and screaming from the brink of defeat.

But that's not the case anymore. Welcome to the "tank" meta as we're calling it - again, a misnomer. I've seen tanky teams get absolutely annihilated by teams packing no bulk at all, and it's because of the comp. It's not a "tank" meta, it's a "team" meta. Brought about by a myriad of new items, your team composition is now far more important than before, which puts the emphasis on teamplay. This is good - and it's bad.

We have a good side where your team is never really out of the game if you have a good, strong composition - play your cards right and, even if you're not quite up to snuff on items, you can still do your job heavy handedly and come out on top. It's not "quick, kill Akali before she kills us all, she's all their damage", it's "okay, Galio's going to taunt the shit out of us, so whittle him down before he can reach us so we can quickly kill him and then fight back before the rest of their team beats the ever-loving crap out of us". It's not "hey Fizz, go dive their backline and kill the bastards and then we'll distract them after you Zhonya's so you can kill the rest of them", it's "okay, we're going to use RG to scatter them, Fizz go pick off a straggler if you can get one, but otherwise I'ma go zone the ADC and I'll probably wind up getting killed but ours can outdamage and-"

You get the picture. Less focus on who you want to point the finger of god at and more focus on how you're about to play the cards you're dealt to win the fight.

But this is bad for solo-queue. Because it's solo-queue. Chances are, if you're finding it to be a breeze to get promoted, somebody else is finding it to be a massive pain in the ass - because if you aren't getting the subpar teammates, then that just means somebody else is. And there are the subpar ones, oh there are, have no delusions about that. With how shitty the ranking system is, you shouldn't be surprised if you're getting shafted with some of those leeches. And with it being the team meta, you can try to carry all you want - but let's break it down for you what the new meta says.

So first of all, you gotta have a proper team composition. If you're a mix-and-match bunch of ragtag outliers filled with niche roles and almost nothing but that to contribute, you're not about to have a good and easy game unless you absolutely stomp laning phase and end that game fast enough that you never see a meaningful teamfight.

Second of all, your focus is now teamplay - in a perfect world, this means that each player is going to be putting in 1/5 of the work required to achieve victory, and the winning team is the one that collectively did better at that. Of course, 1/5 is hardly the case - this number is going to vary as generally you will have one player doing the best at all times, but while it used to be that one guy could be doing 4/5 of all the work of the team, this is no longer the case - you're going to be looking at numbers far closer to 1/5. And that's as it should be in a team game.

So why can't "carry harder" apply anymore? Well, let's consider: if everybody in the game has the mindset that they must "carry harder", they're all going to be trying to carry. Because that's the idea, right? If you can't carry, carry harder. No exceptions if you want to get to higher levels now! Everybody has that mindset - but then, that means that not everybody can carry. You can only really have one person carrying at a time. How the hell does that work? You'd have to do all the work for your team every single time you play the game, which begs the question of how the other people in your ELO ever made it to that point. Surely they couldn't just surf on that many games to there? Maybe they're all promos - but that's not likely, don't be fucking stupid.

That's just kind of the initial logical dilemma with that frame of thinking - the real problem right now is that it's impossible to truly carry your team on your back - you can't just pool all your money into a single person and have them do everything for the team, it just won't work anymore like it used to. So consider that your team must all do their parts to win, meaning 1/5 of the work towards victory yadee yadee yada. If the enemy team's whole number is bigger than yours, then victory they win. If yours is bigger, then yay you win. That's what we've set up.

So let's consider that your teammates are behind. Let's put a number value to this - say, they're all at 900. You are at 1500. That's pretty good - you're fed, you're doing work. Right on. You got this. That's how much you're contributing for your team to victory versus your own team's doing.

The enemy team is at 1200 each with one person at 1300. Your numbers add up to 5100 - theirs add up to 6100. You would have to ensure that you - and/or your team - contribute an additional 1000 points to win. These numbers really don't mean anything, it's more of the logic of the issue - you basically have to almost double your work in order to come even with the enemy team. And it's not that simple to do anymore. You can't just say, "Well then I'll go blow up their team while you wait here". No - somebody has to zone the ADC, somebody has to engage, somebody has to do this somebody has to do that - you can't solo-carry. It's no longer a thing. If your top Vlad's got no gold to his name you can't go looking to your Akali mid to make up for his role because it's not about the damage, it's about what a member of your team contributes. It's why team comps are important - every member contributes a little bit of something to the whole group to make a strong and healthy team. If one of those members isn't contributing something now, that means you're missing a fundamental point.

What this, as an endpoint, means is this - your ELO and MMR is no longer heavily reliant upon how you as an individual do. You are now affected far more than ever by your teammates - and in solo-queue, this is a nightmare. And I would urge Riot to develop a far better way to rank players, because it's no longer a "I got demoted I suppose I'll just carry the three games back into rank" - it's "I got demoted dear god I hope my next three teams work with me well enough to get me back up". It's not solo-queue - it's "fight with strangers" queue. It's not just about you - it's also about those four other fucks that all called mid and apparently none of them know how to jungle or ADC.

not even worth reading. elo hell doesnt exist or elo boosters wouldnt exist. Done and done get better and you will win. Tilt is your own elo hell get over that and you will be fine.

So then you're saying that for literally everyone they simply just have to get better and they will win.

So that means that 9 other people going into a game with me will have this mindset. But it only matters that I do better, right? Not them. Then wait, what are they there for? If it's about me doing better period and winning every game, then every game must solely rely on me and me alone, right?

Or... is it not that simple and it's actually reliant upon those other 9 people as well, which would mean the collective skill of your entire team is weighed against that of the enemy and can result in mixed and varied outcomes which can be heavily affected by the sheer chance of who you're being grouped with out of the millions of potential candidates?

There's a reason boosting services spike prices between Plat and Diamond - it's because it's not that simple, you idiot. Bronze-Gold are ELO's lacking any teamwork - Plat and up is where you start seeing how much your teammates can really drag you down.

then why am i playing on a plat account going on 10 game winning spree's like im challenger when im only diamond? They spike because it can take longer due to your mmr. if you spent as much time learning about the game as you do typing and complaining about false things that dont exist you would be diamond as well (^:

You cannot win every game. A 60% total win rate is pretty good.

It is everyone's responsibility to lead there team to victory. It's as important as CS. Since this is a team game, leadership is not optional.

Then you're saying that every game has 5 leaders.

Then who's calling the shots? Everyone? Then what shots are you following? Everyone's? Then what's getting done if it takes five people to accomplish the common goal and currently you have 5 people doing whatever they want to do?

I rarely see a game that has a clear leader from the start. Usually, the most successful teams are the ones where everyone takes an active role in coordinating the teams efforts. Often the "leader" role changes around on teams like that.

I have a little over a 60% win rate in normals.

I have a ~35% win rate in ranked.

find me the disconnect.

oh. i did it for you. it would be my ADC who never joined one game. My support in one other. my Top in two. and my trolls in several. and my overall shitty team in a good 5-8.

sure. some games we lost and had fun. but a solid half my losses were from people never even getting in game or from people who had little intention of winning from the outset.

yes. be good = win. but that doesnt apply to the presence and mentality of your team.

as it stands. i've completely sworn off Ranked games and as it stands im curently actively playing normals to refine my skill and bump up my non-ranked MMR so that once i finally wade back into that shit storm atleast i'll finally hopefully be able to acquite a team of a higher quality with the potential to make greater LP gains and potential Divisional leaps.

let me go ahead and say that i do not refute your statements. but i simply hate blankets statements like many that are being thrown about in this board that simply says be good and win scrub.

chipndip11 votes

To be fair, I find that normals tend to be easier than ranked, but that's just me....

Sinlaire1 votes

i honestly agree with that statement, but only because i believe that people allow the "it's a ranked game" mentality to cause them to throw while people just play in normals.

the match making system cant possibly be so messed up as to make all your games just naturally easier in one category while forcing you to be stuck with the sub-par at every turn in another. I honestly think that my games suffer from people just getting overwhelmed in the instances i dont have an afk or something.

TheHypeGoku4 votes

tl;dr

Basically, if you're in ELO hell you're probably going against people that are much better than you. Eventually, your MMR will drop so low you'll start to go against people you can actually beat. Getting good teammates vs bad teammates is a 50/50 chance. But just because flipping a quarter gives you a 50/50 chance to get heads, you could get heads 10 times in a row. But eventually, it all evens out. Stop writing this elo hell nonsense and go play some rankeds.

chipndip15 votes

Your summary is wrong:

If you're in ELO hell, it's equally likely that it's your mechanics as it is your team mates' mechanics that are holding you back.

He explained his point perfectly. Eventually, as you fall down the ladder, your 1500 + your team's collective 900 will be greater than the enemy's collective score of skill. Until then, what can you do? You can't just run your tip through the whole enemy team. It takes more cohesive team work than just running through 5 random people like a porn star in a frat house, so carrying your team is harder.

Not impossible to be way more significant than the rest of your team, but your team can't be blatantly idiotic either.

Zenthon Prime3 votes

ELO Hell is when you aren't good enough to solo-carry your team but aren't facing good enough opponents to improve at any respectable rate.

Nýaruko3 votes

I think people think ELO hell exists when it doesn't, what does exist is delayed progression. You gotta play around 400 games to be at your "true" elo where you probably won't go up or down much at that point. This is however, if everything works as it should, but obviously some things don't. A couple things that can fuck you up are... 1: Smurfs... 2: Elorift ELO boosters 3: Friend ELO boosters 4: Luck, and this actually will change per person, taking away some games or tacking on some games.

But in the end, play enough games, you will get to your real ELO.

The problem is finding the time to play like 600 games a season.

Chrony2 votes

This has been said over and over again but I'll repeat it...there is no "Elo hell" only a point where your skill matches that of your opponent and you are no longer able to hard carry. After that point it is all on strategy and how you are able to work and cordinate with others. I am proof positive of this. I have been playin since season one were I was bronze. I experienced this "Elo hell" since last season 3. But I improved my play and attitude and am now steadily climbing to diamond (plat 2) now. Yes I see trolls every once in awhile now but no one starts a game wanting to lose it(this is an exaggeration but maybe 1/10000 people will actually start a game thinking I'm gonna f.uck over these random strangers). The truth is all you Elo Hellers are in denial and just looking for something besides yourself to blame....don't look for excuses look to improve yourself instead and you will escape your so called hell.

Chrony2 votes

Semantics....same thing happens in chess....there will always be a point where if your skill stagnates you will fluctuate and all your games will see to be determined by luck. It is at that point that you can either blame others or push yourself to the max and keep improving. If you can't keep getting better to the point where you stomp or cordinate to where u get your team to win or various other strats to ensure victory then you belong where you are and don't deserve anything

Celeste Benal2 votes

This is exactly where I am. I have to verbally assault people just to get them to ward or move as a team. I ask for more wards, get told "you do it." or "not my job." Tell the one retard that is constantly running off into the jungle with novision to stop doing it, he ignores, either here comes the enemy team of 5 down the middle. Can't hold because we're short one, or he just feeds a free kill to the enemyu carry.

Had a Lee Sin the other day come screaming up the river and into my lane with a nunu hot on his heals. I was at 20% health as ADC. Enemy Jinx gets an easy double. He says: "Why didn't you help me?" I actually had to tell him to turn on his health bars. No awareness. We lost the entire game because of that one mistake.

Chrony1 votes

Ok I'm gonna be straight with you. Climbing out of bronze or silver can be done solely by yourself with no help from anyone. If you are mechanically proficient (I.e. Can last hit with missing maybe 1 per wave and can look at your minimap to conduct your movements you can get out) the majority of bronze lack the mechanics and constantly make mistakes that can be capitalized on. Believe me the enemy team has people just like that on it and will be frustrating their teammates too. If you want some help add me an ill play some games with you and show you what you can do to get better.

Edit: also never....ever verbally assault or harrass your teammates. You will only dig your hole deeper. Try to come off as friendly and non condescending. Believe me I used to be a dick to everyone too. Now I simply yell at my monitor and instead do my best to not type anything or to make sure whatever I type isn't threatening or douchey. Even things like that can drastically improve your winrate

It's funny how in every thread where people claim they are in ELO Hell, or the equivalent, writing about how they're stuck in ELO Hell because their teammates are so much worse than them and how they always go 20/-3/8 every game but always lose because of their feeding team who don't know how to play...

but when you look at their last games to try to give them the help they asked for, you see that they do stupid crap like play a bruiser jungler but only buy armor, took AD masteries on Vlad, and proudly admit that they never once grouped in "the last game my team threw" even when they were playing as the damn ADC, all while "forgetting" that they fed the most on their team in a quarter of their games.

macromite1 votes

It still goes to show my point. you don't think you're in elo hell if you've always done poorly, so even though they are bad, they are still used to being less bad than everyone else, when everyone scales up to being around them, they can no longer handle it. its like you getting put into a lot of games against bad players without you knowing, and then you get placed against players you actually should be placed against and lose. you probably aren't going to look at yourself, because you didn't get any worse, and you didn't watch the entire enemy team through all these games, so obviously the final variable, your new team, is at fault right? This is how elo hell can work, being used to stomping with whatever you want, to not being able to anymore. Still being simply the point where you can no longer solo carry.

Sona Ping1 votes

That's actually the opposite of my point. I'm not interested in trying to redefine the term "ELO Hell" so we can say it exists.

The only common denominator I've found among those who claim to be in ELO Hell is that they are Bad. They are so bad at the game they can't even conceive of how bad they are at it, even when it is demonstrated or just flat out told how their play is bad.

That's how they believe in it. They do poorly but they are where they are supposed to be. Being unable to see their mistakes, they blame their teammates for their mistakes, which frequently aren't even mistakes, and pretending that they are the only reason why he didn't win. "ELO Hell" as in some "system that keeps good players in low ranks" has frequently been demonstrated as being impossible BS excuse only exists the minds of those egotistical asshats who refuse to acknowledge that they can make mistakes.

macromite1 votes

You see, the problem is your ignoring the root of the problem. bad players experience elo hell, because they can't be bad and solo carry. you won't think your bad if you just through winning matches, and elo hell is created when you are slightly lower than your rank, or acceptably within the lower points of it, its not a thing about being much better, but rather, being slightly better. it only affects low elo players at this point becuase higher elo players experience it later, but the change is slower and therefore less drastic.

You sir, need more faith in mankind. Try to understand their woes before your simply write them off as false.

Lugg2 votes

You only really experience ELO hell if you go on a long losing streak. Your MMR becomes so bad at that point that it take you MONTHS to get it back up. You will get just a few points for wins but lose lots of points for any loss.

The people who say it doesn't exist have never experienced how bad it gets.

Chrony1 votes

That is not Elo hell, you have simply falling to a point where your skill level matches your opponents and if you wish to return to your previous ranking you will need to go on a similar win streak that is in proportion to the lose streak you put yourself in. That's like saying a chess player that was previously 1600 ELO but suddenly dropped 1200 after losing success matches to worse and worse people and ended up at 1200 doesn't belong there, when in fact they do until they prove otherwise...you have made the mistake of losing successively to people ranked below you and so you have proven you didn't belong where you were.

chipndip13 votes

Chess is a 1v1 game. Bad analogy.

Chrony1 votes

No it still fits, one team vs another. Elo measures the impact on your ability to make your team win. It is completely valid. There is only one outcome win or lose sooo....ya it still can be applied.

Sinlaire2 votes

no it doesnt fit. which was his point that you only refuted to validate your own statement,

In the OP's posted he clearly stated that a person cannot "carry" any more. this is now a game which forces you to rely on team work and smart plays. you yourself stated "Elo measures the impact on your ability to make your team win". then tell me this. is 1/5 greater than 4/5. because by my math 4/5 is 4 times larger and therefor 4 times more impactful.

I myself stopped playing ranked simply due to this reason alone. I could play hard and do better than any other play on my team. but my ADC never connected. we lost. My top decided to troll and run bottom lane, forcing our support our team to try and figure out who was playing top while our tower was getting wrecked. he never team fought or complied with anything we asked. we lost.

We had 3 team mates get into a fight that was so bad that they practically werent even playing to the point that their champs were left standing in lane to get caught out and die. we lost.

now please tell me where in your of tldr'ed "you lost so you must be bad" righteous logic does it explain where if any of your team mates at any point throw your game for you indicate that you yourself simply arent as good as your current ELO has you at?

In my last 10 games i spent all of my time marveling at sheer stupidity of allies who

  1. couldnt dodge simple skill shots
  2. couldnt understand enemy champion mechanics well enough to keep from dying (tryndmere doesnt die for 5 seconds during his Ult. shocker)
  3. didnt understand the proper application of warding and those responsible (hint, it more than just the support)
  4. couldnt play the game responsibly enough to provide their 1/5 towards winning and simply decided "fuck these guys cuz reasons"

I'm not saying i deserve Challenger. hell. I wouldn't even say i deserve GOLD for god sakes. but this Bullshit bronze 3 im in where every game i play cant seem to let me play without a disconnect or some jackass who can't dodge a nid spear or shut up and play says yes.

There is an ELO Hell. Yes you can carry yourself out of it , and i could, but yes. Sometimes you just dont fucking deserve it like you say people do and anyone who says otherwise just wants to be able to inflate themselves with the capacity to say "I did it so just shut up and do it too."

the belief that the bad only play with the bad are bad themselves loves to completely overlook the fact that a person playing in the rift is only 1/5th of their team and that sometimes it just isn't god damn fair to have to put up with the 4 other guys often dragging you down.

chipndip11 votes

No it doesn't. In chess, you're in control of everything. In LoL, you're in control of only 1/5 of the total man power. In a 1v1 game, everything rides on you. If you lose, you suck. In a team game, however, that isn't the case. If you lose, you COULD be bad, but it also could be because that guy's bad, or maybe she's bad, or maybe no one is but that guy in the corner mistimed something.

Bad analogy.

Chrony1 votes

The same applies to the other team....if that was truly the case no one would be able to consistently climb to the higher ranks and yet time an time again if you place a diamond streamer in bronze they stomp right on back to where they belong. Just because there are 4 factors in your team that apply a bit of randomness does not invalidate the system. It just means you need to play enough games (100+) for the law of large numbers to kick in.

chipndip11 votes

This is due to 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. You're so much damn better than the other team that your arbitrary number of skill outdoes even 3-4 of their team mates.

  2. You were fortunate enough to have a competent team that, even if you weren't the main star of the team, you could still move up anyway.

Don't compare games where you have 100% control to games where you have 20%. It doesn't add up.

Chrony1 votes

The thing is....as has been stated many many times before....in the long run after a 100 games it does. You full well have control of 20% of the game every single game. The enemy then has a full 20% higher chance to fail every single game because every single one of them has a chance to be unskilled, troll noob or whatever. This is why if you can simply keep a 50% Winrate which isn't difficult you will rise and any thing higher will shoot you up the ranks. Seriosuly all these people complaining about Elo hell have sub 50% winrates and expect to climb. This is a team game and I'm not sayin Elo is best way to measure your individual skill, but it does measure something which I think is important. Atleast in solo que, it Is an accurate indicator of how well you can influence your team and win games...that's all there is too it....those 4 other people are just noise that statistical weigh in your favor because the enemy has 20% more noise.

Tldr: get Gud scrub lord ...you can't climb it's because you aren't improving yourself

chipndip11 votes

Thing is, IT STILL DOESN'T add up. It's entirely possible to be in a situation where you're in generally better than your laning opponents, but not better than the enemy team enough to constantly stomp all over them regardless (or nearly regardless) of what your allies, stupid or genius or something in the middle. You can always be caught in a gray area where your still dependent on your allies not being bad, but at the same time your still better than the laning opponents your immediately faced with in most situations. Saying it's cold cut and binary like this is being ignorant. I acknowledge that you'll eventually climb if your THAT good in comparison, but getting stuck in limbo until you can catch a break with competent team members is the elo hell being referenced here.

It's a team game. It's not supposed to reflect individual skill alone like checkers or chess or Smash Bros. Chess is NEVER gonna be a good comparison to a team game.

There's more to carrying than just getting fed out of your mind as Khazix (although I did just see someone do this, 20 stacks at 15 minutes and what followed was disgusting). You can carry by making the game so easy for your team that a dead gopher lying on a keyboard could ride your back to victory, or you could just make the game damn near impossible for the enemy team. You play your tank perfectly and you're a massive pain for the enemy team because they probably aren't going to be winning teamfights while you peel everyone and soak damage and the enemy tank is just autoing a carry, accomplishing sweet fuck-all while you zone their backup.

If you want to call something Elo Hell, it's what happens when you play without a duo during the summertime. Especially in division 5 of anything. Every game is gonna be more or less settled by some stupid thing that would probably make a good story. I'll list a few: -kata gets 20 stacks and then trolls for the rest of the game, ending up with like 3 stacks and no nexus -zed only wants to split, zac doesn't understand not to engage 4v5s over and over -cait that doesn't poke, doesn't follow engages, and facetanks the whole enemy team in teamfights -draven/thresh go 0/8 against vayne/janna Some of those were free wins for me, some of them were free losses. This happens in bronze silver and diamond, only real escape from it is to wisely choose when you play, and duo.

Good post but its the nature of this game. The elo system from the very beginning doesn't fit this type of game because it is team based. Doesn't matter how skilled a player is, if they don't get lucky and have teammates that can coordinate they will lose to a better coordinated team. Its a crap shoot. Its also why I don't play ranked. Well, that and I hate SR. I much prefer ARAM and TT anyways. They need to get rid of dominion and bring Ascension back as well.

that is honestly far to much to read for an Elo hell post

Voyboy went 50-4 as yasuo only starting unranked to diamond 5 last i checked, play better.

Really hope this gets upvoted more, while it's unlikely Riot can/will do anything, it makes for a very thought provoking and interesting read nontheless

I deny that ELO hell exists, cause I've been there man I started this season with so many lost games, I legitimately did not want to play ranked for 2 months Let me put it this way, I had to get an average of 85% winrate over 30 games JUST TO BREAK EVEN. So I've been there man, I feel you, I miss being able to grab Syndra and kill the hell out of anyone that stood too close, then stick on the old back brace and carry. You just have to play consistent, odds are higher that the opponent gets feeders/AFK/Trolls, considering you're (most likely) not one of them. This comes from a man that's been through bronze, and let me tell you, if ELO hell DOES exist, it exists at every, single, tier.

heavy bargaining. don't worry, the acceptance that lol is now a spectator sport and not a game meant to be played is right around the bend, i'm sure.

I have never really agreed with the whole "Elo Hell" thing but OP makes excellent points about the meta making it much more difficult to solo carry games. It used to be possible to say "Guys sit under tower and farm while I carry this shit" but it is much more difficult to do so now for the reasons OP stated. It is also more difficult due to the fact that players are building tankier, making it way harder to delete someone from a fight making it an instant 4v5 every time.

Although you do normally reach the Elo you deserve, I do think this meta makes the progress much slower.
