Wukong and the jungle

I'm not great at the game by any means, but I do love Wukong and I hear he may be gifted with a rework by this year end. With that said, the year end is a long ways away.

Currently I feel like Wu isn't fantastic top lane, he gets countered hard by a long list of champs. Mainly because his sustain is lacking (like there is none). Luckily though, I don't really play him there often. Enter mid; mid lane wu can be a great counter pick to many champs, but his role in the mid lane is very niche. So where does that leave? The jungle!

Yay for Silver league, I can get away with this here. I play Wu mainly in the jungle and only Wu. I've racked up quite a few games on him and somewhere in between come up with a minor buff I feel could help him quite a bit.

What if his clone lasted just a touch longer? .5/1 second longer? Not the invisibility, I think that's fine as is. Just the clone itself. If Wu could tank just a hit or two extra off the jungle camps with his clone, his first clear would be exceptionally more healthy creating a jungle that can compete with the meta more reliably.

I don't feel this would break him and give him some kind of ivern level jungle clear, but he sure would be able to do something about those early invades (Lee, Kha, Graves, Elise). As well, he could stay out a bit longer before his first back and even gank a time or two more.

As it is the monkey is just sub par to other jungles due to lacking innate sustain. The clone is great for tanking two hits, but would it break him if it tanked 3 or 4?

Another idea I've had that would be great for laning as well as jungle, if his decoy healed him based on units hit. I don't know the numbers but something scaling like 10 health per unit the decoy hits instead of lasting longer? Just a thought. Thanks for reading!

I've mained Wukong Jungle since Season 4 and the biggest problem with his Jungle clear is his mana costs. You have to spam your spells which means your clear is very bad if you don't have Blue. I feel like his clear is mediocre when you do have mana or Blue though. This also applies to Top Wu as well. His waveclear is garbage unless you spam your spells

Some band aids you might want to try out are item 2032 or item 3077

Wukong is my second most played jungler, and I swear by item 3077 rushing.

item 3133 >item 3077 mainly in jungle

Yeah i don't really have an issue after I get the first part of my jungle item and maybe a long sword or two towards warrior enchant.

I do have to spam my spells to clear efficiently, but I just can't bring myself to buy Tiamat. I know of a couple Wukong jungles off the /r/wukongmains that swear by it though. I just love finishing up warrior and rushing ghost blade too much I guess.

My main issue with Wu is his weak early game. I feel like he's just really susceptible to counter jungle because his first clear is so weak. That and even if I'm not being counter jungled, if I make a successful gank, but lose half my health early on; it can be a struggle to even clear blue. After jungle item, of course no biggie. But just really early on can be a struggle at times.

Cdr is better than tiamat for an healty clear, if any decide to buy tiamat they should do it after finish warrior.

That's ur fault. early ur main goal is to rush lv6, if there a free gank/kill take it obviously... but u don't take Wukong for early. I know we are in a early meta, but u don't play Wukong to play meta btw he will never be meta until a rework.

Tiamat gives a lot of extra burst when used well, so you shouldn't miss out on damage. Wu can cancel it's animation exceptionally well with auto+Tiamat+Q.

I think that something that hurts Wukong's clear is that some of his power is hidden in his Armor pen from Q, which doesn't work on jungle creeps. But yeah at some point i loved playing him top and jung whenever i could.

That makes sense, I was just thinking if they decoy could tank another hit it'd be a small buff to the health of his initial clear. Just something to hold over until his rework I guess

Sun Wu Ryuumoku1 votes

u can avoid 2 hit with decoy

big boi edri1 votes

Yeah i know it tanks 2 hits, the main thing of the longer decoy I was presenting was to have it tank 3/4 hits. I would think it'd give him just a bit better clear early on.

I know he won't be meta until a rework of some kind and I'm not looking for him to become meta. I enjoy playing him as is, but just a small boost to his jungle clear would be great.

his Q spell isnt his issue for the jungler...

You forgot about support Wukong.

Decoy blocks all hooks and bindings. Decoy let's you E, AA, Q, proc thunderlords and still escaped more or less unscaved. You can zone the enemy ADC by running and pressing "s", they will always fear you jumping them. Has good roams with ult, is good in teamfights and deals okay damage during laning phase.

If you're silver, main Wukong and get auto-filled, try it! It's fun.

Wukong is a bad support... for obvious reason.

his early clears are supposed to be his weakness, because his post 6 is just so dam strong

big boi edri2 votes

I agree his post 6 is great, but other jungles have a post 6 power spike and don't suffer nearly as much early clear.

Let's take Zac for instance, doesn't have the damage like Wu but has the team fight potential of Wu. His early clear is suceptible to invades but he has a solid escape and can still clear at low health after being invaded. Post 6 he has a great últ and long range E. I feel like his early game weakness should be similar to Wukongs, but in fact Wu is much weaker.

The longer decoy I believe would give Wu the ability to maintain just a bit better.

Honestly, Zac's damage to squishies is pretty great.

U are wrong... his lv6 isn't strong. his ganks post lv6 are good. His true powerspike is lv11, but the game is already done in this meta, u usualy know the winner at ten min.

Wukong has been one of my "mains" since I started playing league, he is also by far my fav champ to play in league.

I rarely play him in the jg and mostly just play him top but I think the clone lasting a bit longer is a good idea.

if they do rework him I think they need to make changes to everything though

Blue Moon Wolf1 votes

I wouldn't say he's getting completely reworked per say, but yea it does look like Riot will likely focus on him if they decide to do the diver update after mid season (Riot seems to love to pick between two classes while everyone bickers over who needs it more), which normally means one or two big changes to a champ (if not more).

The longer lasting clone can go a long way for jungle Wukong, but I don't think it will really help out top lane Wukong too much since once the enemy sees him, they will just start attacking the real one and minions don't really fall for his decoy anyway.

Personally I'd like to see him get some kind of sustain like most other divers have and to see the decoy punish the enemy more for falling for the decoy (maybe recover a bit of health if the decoy damages an enemy or something). I have a few ideas I'd like to toss out eventually, but I'll hold on to them till we know for sure what Riot is planning. I'm worried this all will be a moot point anyway if they decide to go with another class.

big boi edri2 votes

Yeah the idea was simply for a stronger jungle clear since I think he needs more help than a small change like this to be viable top lane in many scenarios.

Hence wanting to keep his invis the same. Just wanting to find something that can hold Wu over until they show him so love. This change I would think could be a simple one that doesn't require excessive testing.

The only other benefit I could see from this is blocking abilities for a longer period, but I don't think it would really be amazingly useful. As it is the clone is just good enough to block 1, a longer duration shouldn't change that since you'll appear again.

Blue Moon Wolf1 votes

Oh, as something simple to tide him over till the Diver update, I don't see any issue with that. He does have less sustain then most junglers and divers (that is to say his decoy is his only way to sustain depending on what you consider sustain, otherwise he has none) and could stand to have his decoy take a few more hits for him. The time in which he was made, there was no jungle position, so "making a champ work in the jungle" wasn't really on their minds from what I understand. So letting his decoy seems like a good fix to accommodate him till the Diver update where I'm guessing he will get something to help him there (though lets hope it wouldn't be something like what Skarner got >.>)
