My problems with league as a Season 1 vet

The White Plague·5/26/2016, 9:35:00 AM·227 votes·9,243 views

Now to start out this isn't a thread where I'm gonna whine about the game. However I play league way less then I used too, but I just want to talk about a few problems I have with the game and the lame things that have happened and how I just feel like Riot and this game has changed.

Riot - Riot is not an evil company like how a lot of people make them out to be. But I do think they're a stubborn company. They never do awful things and they've never went as low being pay to win or anything that I would really view as greedy. BUT When they make a decision they do **not ** care what the community thinks. Here are some examples.

1. The removal of dominion Riot removed dominion claiming it was just not worth keeping up anymore, this was a total cop out where what they should of done is just reworked it or made it more appealing, do balance specific changes and make it a good game mode, it was so out dated that it was just dusty. With a yearly income of US**$1.6 billion ** you would think they would have the resources to do this, but I have **never ** in all my years of league ever seen a rioter talk about this, they simply never address the players why they don't use all that money, because it is just so hard for me to think that they wouldn't have enough money to do these types of things.

2. Only 2 maps I just think its crazy that this game only has 2 maps and still makes the money it does, when you think about it, it almost seems like day light robbery. If you look at games like Smite you will see it has an incredible amounts of game modes. Yet it makes MUCH less money then league of legends does. I don't know, just imagine if another online multiplayer game came out with only two maps, you probably just wouldn't bother with it, yet league pulls it off effortlessly

3. Removal of seasons This was the lamest thing EVER! it seems like the more money Riot made the less they worked, or cared what people even wanted. Everybody loved these seasons, Christmas, Halloween, even an Olympic skin for summoner rift was made. But now, they are simply remnants of the past, lost and forgotten Nautilus . Riot said the reason they removed these where because they didn't have the resources, yet I just wonder how? with the MASSIVE $1.6 billion this company makes off one game (Any other video game company would be completely jealous of this) , I just cannot understand why this is.

4. DYNAMIC QUE Yes I had to say it, but I won't really go on about this much because you hear it every day if you go to the boards. Simply, riot did not care about what veteran players cared about and will not change their mind and practically don't acknowledge it. People are STILL asking questions about this but Riot has pulled a famous act of just never replying to any of these concerns, but rather spending their time responding to meme threads and such. They just sometimes genuinely do not care to address players.

5. TENCENT ugh

6. Not enough resources For a video game developer making $1.6 billion off one game is insane. So many developers have to pump out games and new content for those games constantly. I just feel like riot takes this for granted.

Balance - Lately I feel like league has been catering to more casual players and making the game less competitive, I'll also list a few examples here

**1. **Jungle timers I hate that you can now just see the enemy buffs timers whenever they want, this took a lot of skill away from jungleing in my opinion, its really self explanatory and if you jungle like me, you will know exactly what I mean. However I can see why they did this because a lot of people use stupid third party programs that let them know the exact spawns anyways.

2. Range is more powerful then melee I know a lot of people are gonna disagree with me here, but I sincerely believe this is an issue. Melee champions are inherently weaker then ranged champions, and this is more true then ever in the late game. There are so many champions that can kite and make melee champions ineffective. It seems the only time melee champions are ever good is when they're completely busted.

Playing a melee champ without a gap closer is almost impossible now, there is just way to many kiting mechanics and such that any champ that doesn't have a gap closer in their kit will just get destroyed against any smart ranged player. Volibear and Udyr can be strong, but never in lanes unless to directly counter somebody and their only strengths come from their pure ganking power in the jungle. And in the lategame unless very fed will always be outscaled by champions with any reasonable range. Olaf on the other hand is just notoriously awful and Darius even with his pull is only good against inexperienced players or for countering a specific champion. This champ is notorious for being bad in professional play and high elo

UNRELATED: Udyr I just want to say

SPIRIT GUARD UDYR SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN UDYR REWORK Making this an ultimate skin is pretty much forcing players to get this updated model, and riot on purpose will wait as long as they can to visualy update Udyr, and when they do they will PURPOSELY make it not as cool as spirit guard Udyr.

(3) Slug balance The balance in league is so so slow, sometimes Riot will just refuse to acknowledge huge problems in the game ( 95% winrate kass, Akali 1v5ing for months on end, Tank Ekko, Tank Fizz ) It will sometimes take them literally months to make the simple changes that would put these champions in line. Even when there are literally hundreds of balance suggestions everywhere.

(4) Making changes nomatter what Riot will be told my hundreds sometimes thousands of people that a certain balance change will totally break something, but Riot will just do it anyways for no apparent reason (TEEMO SHROOMS AFTER PINK WARD REMOVAL NVER FORGET)

LCS - Just way too much money is poured into when so much money could be used to give the players much more. I think that League should have the LCS, but they should be less concerned with it.

Thats my rant

The only 2 maps thing is kinda mind-blowing... Just think about it for a second, if a new game releases with 6-7 maps people think it's not enough, yet league is the most popular game with only SR and TT (ranked, so HA doesn't count)

i agree, i'm starting to play this game a lot less every season. it's really not the same game it was when i joined. i mostly just play bot games for first win now, play normal games with my friends a few times a week, don't touch ranked.

i actually did a ranked game today despite the fact that i hate dynamic queue, and i won it.. but it honestly didn't make me feel anything. it was just kinda "meh" and i will probably never play ranked again. i have no desire to climb now.

feels really weird not caring about this game anymore, used to play it religiously. kinda sucks.

Good points homie...I especially agree on the ranged vs melee part. There is not much reason to play a melee champ right now because ranged champions beat you in lane and als outscale you. Unfortunately Riot won't do anything to adress this issue, they already made it clear they prefer ranged champions.

I believe this is the cancer of all of this.

Sadly spot on. Especially about ranged is more powerful then melee. I've noticed blitzcrank & the other grapplers have been seeing a significant rise in playrates & bans; and I'd say that's why, they're the only ones that can hold down the hyper-mobile champions being spammed. And that riot's obsession with the 'pro' games is boring and greedy flatout.

AkabaneKun5/26/2016, 3:34:21 PM10 votes

They think they are above all this...jagex wasn't nor was blizzard but when they start having a bad time by season 7 they will see, casuals are nice money bags but casuals leave sooner or later unlike the core playerbase that is here for years now and would stay for more if they had at least some respect for us, but removing dominion while having almost no modes already says much about the current riot state of mind...wtv keep digging.

Hexeliel5/26/2016, 3:32:34 PM8 votes

The game is simple now, and because of that is hard... no matter how good u are in for example dodging skilshots or positioning u are jsut gonna get click bursted now by a Veiagr, Zed or even a Vi. i cant even win games anymore cause of my champion pool the meta is way to enforce right now and i dont like that tbh from plat to silver feelsbadman

Psi215/26/2016, 2:27:08 PM8 votes

As a beta player I completely disagree with you on the melee vs range champs.

This game has been notorious for stupid tanky DPS problems. Nothing escalates the narrative more than the developers acknowledging the problem but failing to fix it. Even you in some part of your thread acknowledge how broken melee champs can get if unchecked.

If any one relates with the classic Meddler statement "Kited for Days" it is the kind of ignorance that gets us the problem we had from Jan. of this year up to patch 6.9

There are plenty of gap closers/champs abilities melee have and items that boost speed and slow even on hit and one that slows on range hit. Thinking outside the box and playing more than; as little as you do now, would allow you to see this.

The buff to grievous wounds really helped against tanky dps but more needs to be done. The tank items in this game are way too powerful. So powerful in fact we have assassins and casters building them out of their insane sustain they provide. It is not just an AP/AD ratio on abilities problem. Watch Tank the Leblanc stream.

I tend to agree with you on the maps but they poured too much into the map Summoner's Rift to update the changes to the winter Olympic map and Halloween one.

Dynamic Queue needed to happen for the following reasons:

  1. You had players giving their account information and paying professional players to play their account.
  2. Solo Queue was NOT really solo queue. It really pissed me off to hear players on top of paying to play their account were also queuing up with one other professional player to carry that account in a few games to the top. DUAL queue was allowed in Solo queuing. It was stupid broken.
  3. Look around, league takes around 2 minutes to get into a game. Players are leaving. And it really is the fact the game is getting out dated. Yet when you play Urf mode.... games are up in less than 9 seconds. People are bored of normal slow pace league.
  4. The top league players... especially if they queue up as a group of 4 or 5 were seeing ridiculous queue times.

Lastly, Veteran players are the only players not recognized in League of legends. This ultimately sucks.

  1. They have all kinds of boarders for ranks.
  2. Ribbons for all kinds of good behavior.
  3. Ribbons for mastering champions.

But nothing really honorable for a Veteran player. I mean yeah I have something... But come on can I please have something more than just a recoloring of Rammus for being a beta player. Even micro transaction games like Puzzle Dragons honors a player for logging into the game. It is all about incentive to even play one game....... something more than first win of the day.....

I stopped reading when I saw Riot's gross income being used as an argument against removing Dominion.

ereiserengo5/26/2016, 2:44:38 PM7 votes

Very good post, I'm fighting with myself to find the game as much competitive as before since the introduction of Dynamic, I very attached to the game and feeling like i care everyday less is hearthbreaking. I agree about all your points except one: Having only one real map (SR) is the strong point of league, more maps means more balance problems and less meta creation that brings to the high competitive levels we are used to in league. What I want to underline is that if league had success till now is for the competitive part of it that made people addicted to it, I loved to think half of my day about how to improve and how to rank up better, now, with the introduction of dynamic, I still feel it a little but nothing comparable to before. I'm afraid the magic is ending and I woulndt like it at all :(

VentusDragoon5/27/2016, 1:00:47 PM5 votes

1.) You can blame Tencent for a good 80% of this stuff.

2.) There are 3 maps, not two. Yes, HA doesn't have ranked, but it's one of the few places that's generally always "fun" like the game should be, instead of frustrating you to the point that you want to cry while the 0/6 Kalista on the enemy team taunts you for losing because her team carried her.

3.) For all the things you named on "Slug Balance," it's more of an overarching problem. Every single one of these problems is caused by Assassins, and honestly I think Riot's going to hold off on anything major with them until they do a class update or something. Assassins with any sort of utility at all (or with any amount of good base damage) will always build tank. However, if you gut their base damages, they may get nerfed so hard that they can't even function normally. (See: S3 Akali to S6 Akali.) The only "healthy" assassins are those in game with somewhat limited mobility options and extremely high damages with no resistances. ...So Shaco, pretty much. Kha'zix is another good example. But the problem is, if you make EVERY assassin in the game like that, there's not enough diversity. Which is what causes these class overhauls we've been having recently.

As a Garen main, this is by far the hardest season i ever played, been playing since season 2 and i simply just get rekt with all the cc and to top it off, since im a solo only player, im forced to play with or against premades all the time, not fun, dem 4 man dives up top just feelsbadman, at least they buffed towers slighly but atm i simply have ot wait for the enemy to fuck up or im just farming all game, tp if we fight since usually in the midst of the choas i can pick someone off. Most top laners picked into me are all range, liss, swain, vlad, graves, quinn, list of range goes on, i just want garens base speed back and his q duration, them nerfs hurt me alot, infact, i miss old garen all together since his kit would help alot in this meta compared to new garen, the 30% tenacity,mr, and armor bonus was awesome, the q silence was way longer, the speed bonus way higher, i didnt mind being slowed when hitting mininons with spin on old garen but at least the spin did full damage when hitting more then 1 target...rofl idk i have a lot of gripes of being a garen main, wish i just had some help...lol

Kinetika5/26/2016, 2:41:16 PM5 votes

I completely agree about the jungle timer, and for that matter, any game "feature" that takes away the unknown.

It's funny how things progressed - awhile back they gave everyone these ward trinkets, because low ELO players just wouldn't buy wards and that contributed to very different experiences for different skill levels.

More recently, they completely removed purchasing stealth wards, and even more recently, increased timers on upgraded trinkets, then introduced jungle camp spawn timers.

I counter jungle whenever possible, and this change makes things easier at low ELO, but for higher ELO might just screw up the game.

Here's an idea - make certain aspects of the game rank specific in ranked rift matches.

FourVsFive5/27/2016, 1:54:14 AM4 votes

Why are they so afraid to balance champs? imagine not having to see the same dam champs all season, will feel like a new game.

Masochist5/27/2016, 1:58:29 AM4 votes

I'm a veteran player - since before season one, since before the game released in full, and I like dyanmic queue.

Neo Metalsonic5/26/2016, 11:44:55 PM3 votes

Apparently too hard for Riot to hire a couple of software engineers in Silicon valley so they can make maps.

They have a very huge team, but it seems nobody is working on content (like maps, for example do you still remember magma chamber?).

3v3 is kind of the forgotten game mode since you had super overpowered champions in it, then everybody quit since 5v5 seemed to only matter. Then Riot reworked it so it would be less unbalanced but it still was and Riot never wanted to do seperate balance changes to 3v3 for a very long time, making it die out yet again, which means Riot won't dedicate resources to balance 3v3 anymore because nobody plays it.

Mandang05/26/2016, 4:49:50 PM3 votes

I just struggle to believe that Riot's polls have suggested players care as much about splash art and lore as they do about game balance and client conveniences (replays, sandbox, "safe to leave", etc). Yet, Riot struggles to deliver the latter while continually producing the former.

I get it, you can't repurpose splash art resources for balance and so on, but by this point I would've hoped Riot could adjust the allotment of each skill set in their employment.

Can you imagine how much further ahead of the MOBA field Riot would be if they had just worked on the things players want instead of continually telling us why we don't want them? We could've had (user-side) replays years ago, "safe to leave" and the new role selection years ago, solo queue months ago instead of next year, more bans years ago instead of next year, etc....

  1. Range is more powerful then melee I know a lot of people are gonna disagree with me here, but I sincerely believe this is an issue. Related, I just want to say Nasus. Darius and Olaf (with recent buffs) shit on Nasus who should be the highest scaling champion in the game. Why? Because they both counter Frozen Heart. Darius does true damage with his ulti, while Olaf's ulti ignored att. speed reduction aura. The latter should make him immune to only to crowd control effects, but somehow the attack speed debuffs became crowd control. Get outta here.

It Hertz When IP5/27/2016, 1:57:21 PM3 votes

Unpopular Opinion time: LCS may be great to watch, but the existence of professional play is killing game balance. Not (IMO) because Riot is balancing in anticipation of what expert players can pull off with a champion, but because Riot is consistently making balance and design decisions based around how interesting a champion's gameplay is to watch. Mobility creep, power creep, kit overload.... I personally blame much of that on the existence of LCS. All the Zed and Lee Sin jokes aside, that's why assassins are constantly pampered and favored over traditional mages, why Graves and Lucian are allowed to be OP FOTM, why Kalista exists at all....

iLoki5/28/2016, 1:23:17 AM3 votes

Not often I see posts from someone else from Season 1, but it's good to see and a lot of points have been made in your post, all of which i really agree with. Riot has a lot they could do to make this game better, but instead they put more focus into releasing more and more champions.
