Autofill is counterintuitive.
I may be a little late to the party here, and I recognize im a little low on the ethos ladder as far as league of legends is concerned, but Autofill really doesnt make any sense to me, and it seems to be more of a hindrance than a feature.
To preface, I am not a superstar league player, (lord knows im trying, lol) but I have been playing for a while, enough to see a lot of leagues transformations through the years. And to be honest I was never really a big fan of the new "dynamic queue" system put into play in season 6, because Ive been a member of the philosophy that everyone should able to play every role, if they want to play ranked. So when dynamic queue came a long, it seemed a little like crutch for bad players, in my opinion. But after a year of being with it, I figured what the heck? This is actually really cool, I can play whatever two roles i feel like and I can always switch em up, and I have like a 60-70 percent chance of getting my primary role anyway. So i changed my mind. The dynamic queue is awesome.....that is... until autofill came along.
Autofill seems so bad for the game. but before you dismiss me as an unskilled player who just lost his recent bunch of LP to autofill. hear me out.
The community complained for years about the condition of solo Q. People felt that there should be a way to queue for whatever role you wanted and that that would eliminate a lot of bad games for people. And after much fighting, riot listened and gave us this dynamic queue, and I think it did actually solve a lot of problems with people getting undesired roles in ranked. Which was good. But then, for no reason other than "long queue times", the new queue system, that was fought for, for so long, "has essentially been made null and void" to quote gbay99. And I agree with him. Autofill seems to completely undermine and defeat the entire purpose of the new queue system. And this is bad. very bad. in fact its worse than the original queue system, and heres why:
-
You can be autofilled onto ANY role.... NOT JUST SUPPORT.
-
The majority of the people ive talked to, overwhelmingly agree, that theyd rather wait an extra minute or 2 in queue so they could get their main role
-
Someone getting autofilled onto a role, often affects more than just that person.
to elaborate:
-
In the old queue it really wasn't a problem for me, and for many others, because you still only really needed to main 2 or 3 roles, one of them being support, and you could do just fine, getting one of those roles like 90% of the time, and the other 10% youd have to play a 4th role. But in the queue system, theres ZERO chance of getting around it, you can be autofilled onto ANY role, not just support, and so that forces players to know every role if they want to do good... which personally, i dont mind that part. what I do mind, is that fact that that completely defeats the purpose of our new 2 role queue system, which was supposed to eliminate the problem of getting put into a role you didnt want... and that it seems to be worse than the original queue, which you could still get those 2 roles, and sometimes a 3rd.. MOST OF THE TIME. With auto fill its worse. There is a fair chance of you getting thrown into ANY role.
-
self-explanatory, Especially in bronze, where queue times are only like 2-3 minutes anyway. is saving that extra minute of queue time, really worth the potential for creating a toxic game for 4 players? I could see why this would be a necessary evil in like plat-diamond and up, but is it really that necessary in the elos? It seems to create more problems than it solves, which brings me to the third point

Autofill affects more than just one person. I have had a significant number of games, that started out sour because one of my teammates was autofilled. It really screws up the experience for the rest of the team when one player decides that this is bullshit, and just trolls. or is generally bad at their role, because they dont main it. I'm in bronze, so it's bad enough that I have people calling gg just becasue we got a few kills behind, I really dont need people calling gg in champion select because they got a role they dont normally play. This is problem that the old queue style had, that was one of the main reasons that the new 2 role queue style was added. and for season 6, it seems like it solved that problem quite well. But now with autofill, that solution has been thrown out the window.
Autofill is like a 2 steps forward 3 steps type of feature for league of legends. To be honest I don't really see how cutting my queue time down from 2 minutes to 1 seriously merits the problems that it creates in the process. Namely, the fact that toxic games and teammates are a bigger problem now because of autofill, and that altogether... it honestly seems like more flawed system, that accomplishes LESS than the original queue did with pick order.
So I don't really know. Perhaps im just inexperienced but does anyone have any thoughts on the topic? I feel that the video by gbay99 illustrates a lot of the problems with autofill that i've mentioned above, and he has more ethos than me.
I've heard some people refer to autofill as a "necessary evil", but I don't think that that absolves autofill of it's faults. It seems like autofill has effectively made the new queue system WORSE than the original queue, where we all just went an pick order pretty much decided it for us with no particularly long queue times.
so.... Thoughts? Rebuttals? agree/disagree? I'm insane?
