Am I wrong for wanting to surrender?

Whatevsman97··13 votes·1,719 views

Let me start by saying, I'm not an optimist by any stretch of the imagination. I go into a match thinking "This is probably gonna end horribly." Most of the time I'm wrong (thankfully). Of course, like with most things, I have to lose at some points. And I'm ok with that. If we lost simply because someone went AFK, I'll be annoyed, but I'll accept it. If we lose but it's a close match, I'll accept it. Here's what I can't accept. Those overly optimistic shmucks spouting something straight out of an anime. "There's always a chance to win!" Spare me that garbage. Lemme give you an example.

We are getting destroyed, they have all of their turrets, we have like, 3 at best.

Me:calls for a surrender Surrender is shot down by two votes.

Me:Garen "Seriously?"

Ashe "I've pulled back from worse."

Sona "There's always a chance to win."

Garen "When we lose, don't get mad at me when I say I told you so."

Ashe "You must be real fun at parties."

Take note, this Ashe and this Sona fed the opposing Jinx, who pretty much turned us all into Swiss cheese within five minutes.

Post game, we lost (obviously)

Garen "So Ashe, you ever pull back from this?

Garen "I told you so."

Ashe "It's people like you that make me hate playing League"

Sona "F*** you Garen."

I'm well aware its a game. But if we're getting torn to pieces by one person, and the other opponents are taking out our turrets left and right, I'm not havin any fun. I can accept a loss. What I can't accept is stubborn fools wasting my time because they wanna be their favorite anime character and spout their ideals like they actually mean something. And I can hear the responses now, "You need to lighten up." "Lol, how long have you been stuck in Bronze?" "I hate people like you." And all I have to say is, bite me. I'm not here to pander to your little ideals. I'm hear to ask, am I in the wrong here? How am I the bad guy? They were the ones who fed, not me. They were the ones who foolishly thought we still had a shot. So in short, am I wrong for being right?

Also, assuming the Ashe and Sona from that match see this, I have one thing to say to you: I told you so.

You sound like you're really fun at parties.

To be fair, you started this with the "Seriously?" and the pessimism afterwards. They might have sucked, and they shouldn't have given you attitude (two wrongs don't make a right), but people do have a right to enjoy the game even if they suck. Unless it's ranked. Screw feeders.

Anyway, that aside, you're not wrong for wanting to surrender. You're in the wrong for not respecting other people's right to not surrender. It's a vote for a reason, and you need to respect it.

You started the conversation by questioning their decision to vote "no," criticized it, brought it back up post-game (really looks like you instigated it, instead of just leaving the lobby), come back to the boards to complain and ask if you're wrong for wanting to surrender like you're the victim, then end your post with a petty jab at the two players who didn't want to surrender.

Forgive me, but I can't really sympathize with you. The issue was not just Ashe and Sona, it was just as much you.

Yeah sorry but my respect for that right to vote goes to zero when the only reason you say no is because you wanna try to be Rambo and pull off a from behind win when the reality of it is that even if the entire opposing team fell into a coma, we'd still have no shot of winning.

IcyPepper5 votes

You do realize there's more than just winning to this game?

And comebacks happen. It's not optimists who always think it's possible (although annoying), it's the pessimist who gets his way that determines the loss.

You lose 100% of the games you surrender, every time.

Whatevsman971 votes

Far as I'm concerned, winning is at least a good 50% of it. 35 goes into loses and the other 15 is to watching other matches.

And its hard to make a comeback when you're pentakilled in 3 minutes by one member while the rest of the team pushes down midlane. We had no shot at a comeback, a blind guy could see that.

"You lose 100% of the games you surrender." Gee, I hadn't figured that out. Maybe thats why it says defeat when we actually surrender.

IcyPepper3 votes

Why do you keep bringing up random stuff about bad games?

People sometimes have fun even if they can't win. That was the point of me saying there's more to the game than winning. The point of playing a game is to have fun, unless you're in ranked and just highly competitive, I suppose. Otherwise, people want to have fun in normals.

This thread isn't about you asking if you're wrong for wanting to surrender (you're not), you're pissy and want to complain about people not wanting to surrender in all these scenarios you keep bringing up that has nothing to do with the conversation. I've seen 20 kill differences in games and one team manages to make a comeback despite the enemy team not throwing, but that's besides the point.

You're not wrong for wanting to surrender, but people to not want to as well. If you can't respect that, then stop complaining because maybe, just maybe, you're not always right. If you can't deal with it, and need to vent on a boards about surrendering, for Morgana's sake, then you might want to check out another game. Or just stick to rank if you can't handle people playing for fun instead of tryharding.

Right you are. Speaking of competitiveness and seriously playing the game, people need to take into account that you can always learn something from a game you play, and most of the time that is what is going to help you be better at the game. So to everyone, It's not just about winning, although that is the desired outcome. It's about the skills you can gain from every small game you play.

No, but they are also not wrong for wanting to keep playing. You are, however, going towards being wrong when you open up a failed surrender vote with "Seriously?"

Whatevsman972 votes

Maybe. Shame I don't regret it one bit.

That sounds like a lack of empaty, a trait of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy.

You may very well not have it, but it is always good to psychoanalysis yourself to make sure you are the person you want to be.

Whatevsman971 votes

I'm me, right? Then I'm exactly the person I wanna be.

Nilok1 votes

The you who you currently are, or the you who you strive to be?

There is a great quote from Dr. Robert Zubrin, "So there’s the choice in life: One either grows or one decays—grow or die. I think we should grow."

If you are already at the place you want to be, if you no longer grow or change, all that is left is decline. Always strive to be more, always aim to be better.

Whatevsman971 votes

And if I can't? Or better yet, since this is just how I feel, if I don't want to?

Nilok1 votes

Sadly, that is a rule of reality and time.

If you are unable to, or refuse to grow, time and the second law of thermodynamics, that entropy will always increase over time and entropy can never be negative, will cause decay.

If you never change, time will wear you down as the world grows around you. This is commonly why stagnation is associated with death, either with people, companies, organizations, even governments. If you cannot keep growing, there are forces in this world that will start to break you down, however varied they may be.

Think of growth as regeneration. The strongest materials will be worn down in time without exception, but if something can keep healing, growing, it will not only hold off decay, it can flourish. You just need to grow faster than you decay.

Whatevsman971 votes

Look, bottom line is, I'm already who I want to be. Couldn't care less about this whole "grow or get left behind" shtick. If it happens, it happens. Like I said, I'm already who I want to be, so I frankly don't care if I'm "left behind" or whatever. Long as I'm still who I want to be when it happens, I'm good.

The problem with what you are saying is that not all change is good change. You assume your point of view is correct so the OP should change to what you believe is right. He is stagnate to you, since he is not doing what you want. Lets flip this and say you are the stagnate one since you are not like the OP. Maybe you should learn and grow? Maybe you should realize when people try to walk vertical walls they should be called out on.

Also in nature when change is bad the individual with the non viable change dies off. So since neither you or the OP has died in your current states (i am assuming both of you are alive) neither of you are non viable.

Some things are straight up impossible or not realistic. When someone does or thinks something completely asinine, why can't you say "seriously?" To think all POVs are legit cause they come from someone is wrong. Not calling someone out cause they be upset is wrong. These are logical facts.

Nilok1 votes

It is true that not all change is good, however, I have been referring to growth, which is a positive change. If the change is negative, I would hesitate to call that growth.

Regardless, It is his choice to grow or not, I cannot force him to. I can only make him aware that remaining stagnant can have consequences later on and may cause him to lose out on future opportunities.

Angry Monster1 votes

My point was that you see the change that you posted as good/positive. The OP see his current behavior as good/correct/what ever. You can not just say X is wrong with out absolutes. As long as their is a situation a rule breaks it is a subjective matter. You subjectively see things one way since it almost impossible to make rules for behavior.

Yes it his choice to grow or not. That still does not mean you are right (that his attitude is bad) unless you can state a rule that is absolute. Real growth is good and meaningful, but a lot of times what humans call growth is stagnation.

please read all the way through

well, unfortunately, as one of the posts below states, it is a vote. Actually, demeaning someone's ideals is far worse than trying to win with come from behind (though yeah, it's a very, very bad idea not not focus the carry and end their streak). Being a realist in a game does not mean you should criticize someone's ideals and preference for fun, if anything, it might only be most satisfying in a way that doesn't harm the individual to report the player as "unskilled"

I once played a match as twisted fate, who at the time was considered a troll pick because there were few who mained him. our team had pushed to their nexus but been forced back and while the enemies were pushing our base, I Gated into the enemy base and destroyed the nexus.

There are rambo's everywhere and I want to get rid of them, but technically, it is in the wrong to criticize them only for their ideals.

More experienced players in the league...although brutally bashed by many players...take the time to explain to the players strategies, support options and counter-strategies, so that even those who do not pay attention to the game MIGHT learn something and for those who truly wish to improve while having fun to do so

A recent strategy I created for early game is to use the face of the mountain items for carries to support each other. ever been in a match with 3 ADCs in one lane? why not make it fun where your characters are healing each other and providing support while playing to their strengths without losing anything in return. Sounds fun, doesn't it?

There are times you can tell that you might be able to pull a win out of your ass, and a time when you know unless the enemy player dc's(luck rate over 9000) or something that you have no chance.

Provengreil3 votes

Ah, the eternal surrender thread. Allow me to submit my 2 cents to be ignored.

I surrender based on hope of winning. It's not about statistics or chances, though those can help. it's about the momentum of the game, team compositions, and player strategy until this point. To wit:

our riven is getting stomped by darius, like 0/4 at 6 minutes stomped. our bot lane is zoned out of their CS because they took kog/soraka into leona/graves. I'm doing even at mid, but anivia/karthus is often a farm lane unless one of the two really screws up. both junglers are rushing to 6 in the bushes. Early on, I'm kinda sad but we haven't lost yet. Anivia can hold a tower against anything, riven will still have squishies to kill and our ww will scale quite well.

Fast forward this match into three situations at 20: A: we've taken top outer tower, but lost everything outside of our base. we can't currently leave the base even as we know their yi is taking third drag. riven kept charging straight into darius, so now he has a 20 stacked occult and can almost one-shot koggles, riven, or soraka. the only semblance of resistance we ever mount is my glacial storm, securing any one tower, but the others immediately come under siege every time, to faltering resistance. We will not win this game. I vote yes.

B: WW ganked for me at 6 and we managed to turn it into a kill. the extra gold boost got me an earlier ROA, and I could start putting a decent bit of pressure on karth to abuse the spike. our other lanes are still losing but now yi will focus mid, which I can handle. we start to die slowly as darius roams and rotates, but manage to keep a death grip on our inner turret line. Riven is getting a bit of free farm, ww is not denied from his jungle because of the turret line, the enemy still has dragon control and will get third quite soon, but we can make it work as our comp will begin to outscale if we can bait out the right teamfights. We will still likely lose, but a path to victory does present itself. I will not start a vote, but will vote yes if 3 others already have: this game is only winnable of the whole team is in the right mentality.

C: WW ganked for me at 6 got a kill. Yi later attemps to rebalance the lane, but gets baited by my egg and end up geing a buff delivery. I can now force karthus into total waveclear mode. darius takes top turret and then goes ARAM, only to be stopped by glacial storms. ww realizes we gank bot next, scores koggles a double kill, and we're back in this. we make a fight for third dragon, 2 for 2 and get the drake. game's slightly in their favor from the top lane, but not even close to a losing game. Even if someone starts a vote, I'm saying no.

Raivica3 votes

I think of things a little differently than all of you guys seem to. Some games, I know, yes, we COULD win...but the game's been absolute torture so far, nobody's really fed, or at least, none of our carries are, and winning the game wouldn't necessarily make all the unpleasantness worthwhile. I could probably do better explaining that, but hopefully it makes sense.

Shonjl2 votes

I have mixed thoughts on this. Yes you had a hopeless game and I would have been annoyed too, but people do have a right to vote. I would have asked them why and see what they said. If they were doing it to be trolls then at most I would report them and possibly ask others to report and then leave. If they were doing it since they thought they had a chance, you just suck it up and keep going. At least most games when someone snowballs that hard, the game will end in about 5 minutes anyways so it doesn't matter. Its not a waste of time unless they take ages to win and if they did, then maybe you did have a chance to win after all, since truly lost matches at that point would literally be over in not even a minute if all you had left was 3 towers, which i assume 2 as nexus towers.

I agree that I hate the people that have the whole "No surrender" mentality since regarding to what people say about the game not only being about winning are wrong. You can see it by how pros play, you can see it by even how Riot thinks, look at MASTERY system, it basically says if you win you are rewarded, if you lose you can go fk yourself. But I won't argue with them since while I know they are wrong, I am not going to force it on them. If they want to think that way so be it. But at same time, like others said, the way you said things made you no victim. If anything I woulda stopped at what you said ingame about the don't say I didn't tell ya so when we lose. Since you only rekindled the fire in the postgame when it was obvious to all you lost and known full well it would cause drama needlessly.

Personally what I try to do when a game is lost is just farm my lane til its over since again, most steamroll games at that point often end very soon after and you not being there in teamfights doesnt really matter if you all melt in 4 seconds instead of you being there and making it 5 seconds.

As for the voting system I have seen both ways happen, I have been one of the people that refused to surrender since it was one of the games the enemy had a huge lead, but also kept said huge lead for over 10 minutes which says something. If they truly were in control they woulda beaten you already, so due to me and my support seeing that and denying the surrender, we ended up turning the game around and winning when it was something like 30 kills vs 56 or something like that by simply making sure the one person with half the enemy kills (Katarina obviously) was never given a chance to jump in and when she did, I killed her and with her death we could push several towers. But I have also seen the troll games when it was obvious you had no chance, the ADC was killing towers in seconds from full health, the tanks could sleep under towers without worry and yet you have people wanting to continue, but again, those games don't last long so at worst you lose and can report the people for unskilled or something and move on.

Dr Poro2 votes

Game is 31-8 they have destroyed 8 turrets and 2 inhibs, we have destroyed 2 turrets while they also have all drakes. You try to surrender? Surrender vote failed 2 for 3 against.

I have no idea why there are so many Mundo's IRL but I always seem to get teamed with the biggest masochists on earth.

Seriously, sometimes you lose so bad that there's no coming back from. Just accept the lose man! You can't win every game so it's sometimes just better to surrender and start a new one. Btw I'm talking about normal games here, where losing doesn't even penalize you so there is no reason to stick in that game where you get your ass raped like no tomorrow.

BluePolarizer2 votes

there are comebacks that look impossible, but are actually very logical, if you have the game knowledge to identify them. A score of 0-15 is not always gg because it depends on your team comp.

As for who am I? I'm a player in high plat.

Whatevsman971 votes

Well laa de friggin da for you. Tell me, in any of your oh so great high ranking platinum matches, you ever come back from a game where your inhibs are exposed and you're whole team has been penta killed twice within a span of 10 minutes?

Cause if not, then spare me your high and mighty "platinum rank wins" garbage.

BluePolarizer1 votes

Yes. I've won games where the enemy ADC was hitting our Nexus and our Nexus was 2 autos away from dying and everyone was dead. I've also won 4v5's where my ADC AFKed at lvl 1 or where my support AFKed after feeding a kill.

Then, of course, you have the perfectly winnable games where a player who still thinks like a bronzie goes "gg" and intent feeds to "end the game faster" or sits in base spamming surrender, because they fed FB and can't solo carry anymore.

See, you care alot about this game. I don't. I play for fun, so I don't really care about winning, but rather improving. You, on the other hand, care greatly about winning. That's why you are complaining about surrendering. If you were plat, you wouldn't, but since you a bronze, you do.

Whatevsman971 votes

I complain about surrender because I have better things to do than waste an extra 20 minutes because some idiot wants to try to be a hero and carry, when in reality its their fault we're losing.

But no, of course what do i know, I'm just a bronze. I've only been playing for a year (I was on/off for a while, got caught up in other things). I've only been stuck in games that I know are impossible, games I honestly want to just walk away from, but can't because idiots like you wanna go on about your little stories about how you "took down the hyper carry and won the game". And then you slayed the Jabberwocky and saved Narnia.Seriously, go take your little war stories and your "improvements", and preach about them to some idiot noobs who don't know any better.

The game was a loss, no question. We didn't even surrender, we just had no chance. A blind guy could see that.

Judging by your attitude I think you decide you could decide you're done with the game within the first 10 minutes if the game isn't going perfectly for you. By the time you have 3 inhibs down, you're just running through the motions and not even thinking about how you can win. And if you don't think I get where you're coming from, I play with a friend of a friend who opens the soup kitchen and starts feeding after he has died once in lane. Also, just like you, he insists he is just a God and will take advice from NO ONE no matter how bad he truly is. If you want to be good at this game, don't tell off people who try to help you. When did I say I was God? Don't go sticking words in my mouth.

And for the record, this guy's "help" is pretty much the same copy-paste "dont surrender, i've played games where we were down two players and we managed to make a comeback."

Yes, very great help. Oh thank you wise master for your oh so intelligent words of wisdom. Because saying someone doesn't have the experience to tell when a game is lost, then waxing nostalgic about how they've pulled comeback games without any sort of detail or information that could be qualified as helpful, then dropping that your platnium is totally advice I should listen to. I'll be sure to try techniques like those when I'm in a losing match.

Thats the "advice" you're trying to defend. Though when you look at how much time and effort he put into typing it, you can see it's really something I should put stock into.

Vistha Kai2 votes

Everytime I hear somebody say "Never surrender." something dies inside of me. I have nothing aganist not surrendering per se. Even the opposite! There are situations which you shouldn't surrender.

You see "situations" is the keyword here.

No, "ranked" isn't a situation, you dumb crap. Just because you play for imaginary League Points doesn't mean you should act all samurai who dies before dishonoring himself.

When you picked all counter, but terrible teamfighting champs and expect to win every freaking 4v5 you jump into, don't expect me to die with you or care about your "all group mid" cries, because if you didn't notice, IT DOES NOT WORK! This team doesn't want to win, quite the opposite they want to - subconsciously, but still - lose. This above is a situation which you should surrender.

On the other hand we have, say, 10-30 game, but your team is better mid-late game and in teamfights, while the enemy team got a lead only because they countered specific lanes. If the losing team's morale is still high and actually want to win for the sake of winning and showing those punks "We are better!", then hell no, surrendering is not an option.

Baunjo1 votes

Yes you are most definitely wrong. One of the main things that separates good players from bad ones is they generally already know how, but are always looking for ways to get ahead, or in some cases, catch up. A big part of this comes from being able to both identify when your enemies make a mistake, and capitalize on it. Whether you believe it or not, even someone who is 20/0 can make mistakes. If you just whine and whine at your team for doing whatever wrong, that is completely counter productive. Learning how to properly play objectives is a huge part of this, in fact, i have a thread on this that you should look at on this concept. You wont ever be a better player if you just lay down and say that the team that beat you last is just better than you and not try to figure out what you did wrong and instead surrender and wait for the next win, or in your case, expect the next loss.

Whatevsman971 votes

Oh spare me that "separates the good from the bad" tripe. Capitalize on a mistake huh? Yeah, thats gonna be real easy when the enemy turns you into a corpse on sight.

Properly play objectives? Yes, thats a good idea, run out, take out 1 turret, mind you the only turret your team has taken, and then wait for. 2 seconds while you're rushed by the entire enemy team. Give the less fed members a chance to catch up.

I won't get better huh? We'll see about that. At the very least, I'll be smarter than the rest of my team. I won't be running out of the base like an idiot into what can only be described as a five person meat grinder.

So you just afk? sounds better than dealing with a toxic cunt who wont actually try and get better or do anything productive to win. After all, you dont need 5 people to win. And yeah when someone makes a mistake, if you know what that actually was, you can punish that and further yourself. its not as hard of a concept as you think. Just be smarter than the average idiot

Whatevsman971 votes

Better, I just sit there and watch. I just sit at the base, abd while the rest of those idiots are stressing themselves trying to push mid, I'm relaxing, watching them die with a sandwhich in hand.

The best part is when the most vocal member of the team tries to blame me for their deaths. "If you'd been there, it would've been different. We might've won." Yeah, sure, keep telling yourself that chief. Whatever it takes for you to maintain your delusions.

And like I said before, hard to punish a mistake when you die too fast to see it.

Better your just sit there in watch? You literally sound like a toddler saying " No if we can't do it my way ( surrender ) im gonna go pout in the corner " ( or in your case sums plat ) If your team clearly will not surrender, don't waste their time and make the game less fun for them just because your a little pretentious bitch. When you get into a match you are dedicating your time to other people whether you like it or not. You need to act like it. And clearly if you don't understand what I mean when i say punish a mistake there is no hope for you, this isn't COD, you don't win games by playing TDM.

Like I say to my team when they wanna blame me for something that really wasn't my fault (I've actually participated in team fights we had no shot in, they still try to blame me) "Cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it. And if you can't do that, just jump off of the bridge and drown."

Also, I like how you keep recycling the "punish a mistake" routine without expanding on it in any way shape or form. What mistake, what am I looking for? Before you go writting me off as hopeless chief, you put more effort into your respone beyond "duuuur, do this thing."

I have an honest question. Do you want to be a better player?
