Do you like ARURF?

Naenia··23 votes·3,211 views

I'm interested in what the community thinks about why they feel ARURF is a failure or a success. Hopefully Riot can learn and grow accordingly. I, myself, haven't had the opportunity to play yet but I'd love to see what this is like. Share your thoughts!

I like it. And I say that having gotten my least favourite and worst champion in my first game while having to go against a malz and a kass. Why? Because next game I got Rumble and pentakilled the enemy team, which had Xerath, LB, Zac, Rengo, and Brand, all good to very strong in URF. I would enjoy it more if it was random between every champ, not just the ones you own, but it is still fun and much more balanced than before.

I'm loving it too. One of my problems was that I wanted to play so many different champions in URF but I couldn't decide on one and just stuck to a champion that was in my comfort zone (usually Malzahar since he is personal favorite). Now I can have fun with my whole champion pool with the randomized choice at the start.

Owyn2 votes

For some reason I decided not to roll Mundo and totally rocked everyone :D

ChaosThief6 votes

I wouldn't call that balance, I would call that luck; you either get a good champion or a bad one.

In general, it sounds like it didn't fix any champion by champion balance issue, but then again, that's near impossible. I would think it's much more fun, though, because variety exists.

I do like it. I mean, it's not perfect and certainly has some issues(cough aram-accounts cough), so there is room for improvement, but i prefer it by far over normal urf and it's effective pool of 15 champs. I certainly prefer getting randomly outpicked every now and then from getting certainly outpicked everytime i don't go with on of the few god tier OPs.

I have to agree here. I won't dodge because of a bad champion, but other people will. I went into queue with an approximate time of 14 seconds... 3 dodges, 4 failed AFK checks and 2 minutes later I am starting a game. The AFK checks happen, no big deal, but had a bunch of dodges when people weren't happy with their champs and couldn't reroll and nobody would trade.

Make some punishment for people that dodge so we can really enjoy it. Maybe balance out ARAM and ARURF by including champion mastery points and number of champs owned into the match making. This way people with a small selection of champs they have high mastery with would be matched with similar players. Say (# mastery points)/(# of champs owned) = Mastery Ratio. Then new players with 20 champs wouldn't be matched with experienced ARAM players with 20 champs and ARAM only players with a high mastery ration (few champs owned all with high mastery) would be matched with experienced players.

ItsOrval13 votes

No. Its all about who has that one champ that is broken af in urf. Does the enemy have a Hecarim? Gg. You die too fast and its just boring in general

VivaLaKitten11 votes

I wanna play ap Nasus- oh wait got Renekton, uh oh

You know, Renekton wasn't that bad I should try him ag- oh cool, Mordekaiser. . . . I hate playing Mordekaiser "why do you own him then" because I bought him to try him, then didn't want to waste a refund on him shame on me for not having an account of perfect spam champions am I right?

The idea was good. After that I ran into a shitstorm of ARAM accounts that simply ruined it for me. I kept meeting 2-3 people with matching nicknames/tags, flashing lvl 6&7 masteries with skins in a mode, which is supposed to be random. The only random thing was if I was matched with them, being carried without actually have fun, or be in the enemy team, get stomped and again - not having fun. And that was the case in more than half of my game. I am mad at the community this time. RITO tried to deliver us a fun/silly mode and there were f-ckers who ruined it again.

doiminat0r36008 votes

People are complaining about it even though the last time urf was a thing, the community wanted ARURF.

So stop complaining.

Maximum Can3 votes

find me the thread where this was asked for by lots of people

EROTIC RAID BOSS4 votes

a lot of people suggested it on here in different threads complaining about all the 'op picks' everyone spammed. it was suggested some on reddit too. I always said it was a terrible idea and what do you know, it is.

Steelflame5 votes

No, the way Riot implimented it was a terrible idea.

We wanted true all champion pool unlocked random. We got "Oh, just log into your ARAM account to be a top tier pick instead" "AR"URF.

EROTIC RAID BOSS6 votes

it would still be pretty damn bad. the whole fun of URF is picking champs you enjoy and can outplay with. without being able to pick your champ there's no reason to play at all

Steelflame3 votes

And the whole fun of ARAM is that you get a random roll game.

Guess what. ARURF is NOT URF. It is a game mode based on URF and ARAM's love child. It isn't what you want, but you will deal with what you get. Should we only have URF because that is all Y player wants? No variance, no difference, because some people want to exclusively play a specific thing?

Maybe for the people who only play like 5-10 champions, then yes, ARURF isn't for them. For those of us who have a broad, deep champion pool, who enjoy playing just about every champion they own (All but like 10 of them btw for me. I will happily play anything, and ARAM gives me that random so that I don't have to pick between A, B, C, D... X, Y, Z, AA, AB, AC, ect.), this is pretty close to what we want.

RocketRelm3 votes

As much as I think URF needs a different implementation than this, I would like to point out that 'aram' and 'URF' generally have divergences in their tier lists.

Steelflame5 votes

They do to a point, but that's generally that URF's is a larger champion pool vs ARAM, and the ARAM picks will still be good, just a few URF specific picks will be better. You still have a far more consistent lineup than someone who has every champion though.

Ulriah6 votes

A few people on Boards =/= the community.

If you don't like reading complaints then stop reading.

doiminat0r36003 votes

Really? You're gonna hate comment on everything of mine because you disagree with me stating that ARURF is actually good? How immature dude.

Ulriah5 votes

I'll hate on any comment that supports this crap arurf.

Imperial Japan1 votes

Okay then you come up with something better, become a game developer, then implement it. Besides if you don't like the game mode just shut the hell up and don't play it. You're not being forced to complain or play you know?

Ulriah2 votes

Come up with something better, sure, the previous version of URF, there, easy.

Just shut the hell up? Why don't YOU shut the hell up first? It was because of a bunch of crybabies that URF got changed in the first place, so apparently complaining works. If you don't like it, don't read the Boards.

Imperial Japan1 votes

Look then don't frickin go to other peoples comments just to talk crap to them. Make a thread complaining about it.

Ulriah1 votes

Uhm, no, it's called a discussion board for a reason, not a blog.

Qiy4na6 votes

I don't like losing something just because I got a certain champion. It's just not fun. I can stand losing if it's a fair game, and people had a chance. However, ARURF does not supply that option because it only takes it away. This is why I hate ARURF. On the positive side it widened the gap between sort of op champions and not op champions :)[slayer-jinx-unamused]

Fíction5 votes

AR URF did not fix anything that people were complaining about with normal URF. Now instead of the same 20 champs being played and people calling it OP, we get stuck with going up against the SAME 20 CHAMPIONS that people complained about because people are getting those champs.

Owyn5 votes

Well, it would be a nice replacement for Howling abyss aram mode, but not as replacement for traditional URF. Cuz it feels pretty the same - either you'r lucky and stomp with your OPs, or you'r unlucky and get stomped by OPs

LadyRenly5 votes

no "all champs unlocked", no bans.

so it kinda blows

I think ARURF was a failure. Not because of what they did, but what they failed to do. They made it healthier and unhealthier. It's healthier because the randomness makes it easier for new players, because no one is guaranteed getting their main champ anymore. It's unhealthy because no one is guaranteed getting their main champ anymore but are still able to...add in that the random champs given to you to play can even be part of the Free-2-Use roster which consists of champs you've most likely never played at all, and you're going to have a bad time. It feels pretty bad when you have a toxic Diana or Singed that don't know how to play their Champ, and then they spam the chat because they're toxic little shits who shouldn't even be allowed to play LoL in the first place. I also think it's bad because of the reason randomness was in only one lane before. Randomness is supposed to be a "nerf" in its own right to the game while also being fun because of that randomness, but it was only able to be balanced by having a single lane where everyone -- no matter their experience -- could enjoy playing champs from outside their comfort zone. But ARURF tips that on its head because now it's 3 lanes and a full jungle quadrant of "oh look I got ganked by an Alistar who's taking me dry to kingdom come and back" without even having the security of knowing how to use your own champ to outplay him. Which is another point. URF is supposed to be incredibly fast-paced even more so than Summoner's Rift, to the point where it takes raw experience to be able to outplay overwhelming odds. Being incapable of choosing your own champion, and even potentially getting a champ you've never seen before, ruins that because now you have learn on the fly a champ you're likely to feed as anyhow. My solution would be to change it to Twisted Treeline. 1) No one cared about the Jungle in URF or ARURF, 2) a large population of players now have close-to-no experience in playing most champs they play in ARURF, and having a smaller map and smaller jungle would make it easier to play for newer and veteran players alike, 3) because URF was already fast-paced, so a full lane removed from the equation won't change much, and 4) because removing 2 players from the match would make games be more based on outplaying your opponents instead of teamfighting or running from your opponent's full team (1v5s have always been terrible in URF, but they've been managable because you knew how to play your champ and outplay them; having only 3 opponents -- and 2 allies at the same time -- is healthier in this kind of fast-paced randomized gameplay). So there ya go. I doubt Riot will see or notice this at all, because they rarely pay attention to any posts that don't specifically call for Meddler, so I have no hopes for URF to come back from its dump in the future. They already ruined Ascension and Dominion and haven't done anything about them, so why would they fix URF?

Naenia2 votes

You've brought up some valid points and I thank you for your insight. Also, I didn't know the thing about calling upon Meddler. I was wondering why I've been seeing a lot of threads that have "@Meddler" in the title. Thanks for that tip. I'll have to remember that in the future.

Steelflame3 votes

For this, you would want something like @L4TENCY or whatever the exact name of the dev that handles RGMs is.

Thank you :)

Attticus Finch5 votes

Tried to play a match just now. I got Katarina, some dude with Lulu asked to trade with me. Having never played Lulu and with no intention of ever playing Lulu I declined, and he dodged immediately.

Because you can't choose the champ you want to play I have no doubt that the amount of dodges in this mode is going to be huge.

So nah, into the garbage this mode goes.

Gora T2 votes

I haven't experience any dodge since it's a 20 min penalty, at least that Lulu got it.

Leetri2 votes

I've played 5 games so far and not a single dodge. The dodging penalty is higher than normal, so everyone who dodges for the tiniest thing won't be able to play the game.

Ligerzz5 votes

Well i've been getting a crapload of S so i'm not gonna argue, and even discovered a few hidden broken picks as well.

MrBuffington5 votes

It's better than regular URF, since you get a lot of cool champions you would never see otherwise; it needs bans though, since it's a coinflip to see who gets the most BS champions (ie. Evelynn)

Leetri2 votes

And then you get people who can't play Evelynn who get absolutely destroyed. You don't auto-win just because you got a strong champion.

Yamispade4 votes

I would rather face the same champs every time while at least having the option of picking my own broken champ then the setup where you might get a good for this mode champ or you might get an subpar support or melee champ meaning you're fucked from the get go. essentially playing the lottery that's going to eat up 20-30 minutes of my time. Add into this dodging penalizes you. So basically if you play this mode you either get lucky and get an empirically imbalanced champ either for strictly this mode or in the game, or or or you get the bottom of the barrel champs either in this mode or somehow that are equally bad in normal play. They didn't fix the "balance issue" they simply made it an RnG mode which favors those who make ARAM like accounts. It's almost like the vocal minority got listened to and we ended up with this. Riot could have simply gave ARAM players their own URF mode for ARAM or made this version an option on top of the original version thus pleasing both crowds.

ipkandskill3 votes

ARURF is fun but the other team just consistently gets busted ass champions like xin and then it literally just gg on load screen. sy enough fix just get rip of like 10-15 of the champions who are mega busted then it would be super fun.

Meep Man3 votes

It feels like you are doomed from the start a decent amount of times, but its ok.

Mighty Mortein3 votes

Hopefully IF ARURF rears its head around another time, ARAM only accounts will be useless in it.

Ds4OcKl8dn3 votes

This mode is literally the bane of my existence. This random bullshit of a mode is just ARAM on summoner's rift.

It's not just the ARAM accounts but the mere fact that its random champs that completely outbalances teams like a motherfucker.

Introduced a fun game mode that I enjoyed long ago now turned into rubbish garbage that I would rather play bot games with friends than that shit.

[slayer-jinx-unamused] Riot secretly hates us

Ranch Blessing2 votes

the fun thing in urf was the experimentation, trying different champs out to see what combo might be strong or what synergy you could find between champs when cool downs were lower. not being able to pick your champion is a death-knell to the game mode for people that enjoyed it like I did. All random is fine by itself as a fun, slightly different game mode, but when merged with urf it's too much and it takes the sense of agency away from the player.

Urf should honestly be at least a custom game mode so we don't have to whine for months and months to get a couple days of it- many game modes in the rgm queue are good for learning about the fundamentals of the game- urf teaches combos, nexus siege (obvs), ascension teaches you to how to shut down a fed enemy (etc.etc. et al) and these game modes are just fun to play generally. I think that riot is making a bad move by designing all of this content and refusing to let us play it. I mean shit, even if rgm queue is just ramping up to selling us these game modes individually I would be fine with it, but I cant see why they would just trash entire game modes for months and months. Dumb AND stupid idea.
RisenDarkKnight2 votes

I like it. However, they should probably have added bans.

I had to play against sona 2 games in a row which was somewhat annoying.

Then in another game, I got hecarim and literally was able to 1 v 5 the enemy team.

So it's defintely better than old URF, because you get a lot more variety of picks, but some (like Hecarim) are still so OP that they auto win, so they should add bans for next time.

Edit: Also I don't think the complaint about ARAM acounts taking over ARURF is valid at all. There is a huge difference between what champs are good in urf and what champs are good in aram. Champs like Hecarim, Evelyn, Skarner, Fiora, Zed, Xin Zhao, Jax, etc are all amazing in URF and not in ARAM. Most poke champions aren't actually that OP in URF after the first 8 mins or so. Obviously there are a few champs that are really good in both (Like Sona), but I think the power of a lot of melee/short range champs in this mode (and the fact it's on summoner's rift) makes it way different from ARAM.

Veltox2 votes

All URF needs to be perfect is either unlocking all champions to kill URF only accounts or disable certain champions like Karthus case in One for All.

TBakes2 votes

I have actually really enjoyed it! There are improvements that could be made, which would be as simple as making all champions available for everyone, but beyond that I think it's incredibly fun. Even the games I lost felt like I was laughing at people getting outplayed and going too ham all the time. I wish I could play this mode instead of ARAM regularly to be honest.
