Just want to share...

I won't go in to much detail, but long story short I had encouraged a friend of mine to try League so when he learns how to play it we would be able to play together. I told him by the time I finish summer school and by him playing the game for that duration we would be able to play and climb together (of course I thought him few basic things before he got to go by himself). However, just a few weeks later my friend told me that the game just literally sucks and that he might just not be able to enjoy the game. I asked him why? he told me two major things:

  1. In all of his games he felt that many of the players in his normals (can't play ranked cause under level) have already played the game before (like smurfs). He felt that there was really no challenge/growth to his lane or gameplay as he was just being stomped.

  2. Getting stomped and really get flamed so hard. He doesn't take them personally but he told me they're just really nasty and condescending.

Overall: he felt the game doesn't really give a real newbie welcome.

Mainly four types of players make new accounts

  1. Smurfs who just want to stomp
  2. Toxic people who got banned
  3. Actual new players
  4. Friends of new players

and sadly there's currently no way to distinguish between them. Also, there's no real way to teach new players in PvP without a smurf. I wish Riot would implement further verification methods to make sure every player only has one account, but that will

  1. be practically impossible without using passport numbers (and that results in even more problems)
  2. not allow to teach new players in PvP games.

Basically, new player experience sucks, but currently there's no easy way to fix it.

Half that would be fixed if there was good tutorials. (And if most new players used the tutorial in the 1st place).

Would it though?

I can see where you're coming from. Better tutorials mean that you don't have to teach new players how the game works, meaning you don't need to create a new account. But I doubt tutorials will ever be as effective as playing with somebody experienced. Additionally, if you introduce friends to the game, you generally want to play with them.

New tutorials will definitely help (I guess we'll see next season how much), but I don't think they will "fix" any of the problems.

I believe in what your saying, but ai games and especially custom games are good ways to teach new players. But there still is the issue of proper pvp games played with a smurf, and while i despise smurfs, they deserve to play with friends, yet if they play good then it is ruined for the enemies and if they joke around to compensate it ruins it for their team. Seems there is no easy fix as you said.

This game is fucking awful to new players or existing casual players.
