Essence Reavers concept should be applied to Athenes

Make it give 10% CDR and up to 20% more based on stats from other items (AP or MR or whatever). That way there is a clear distinction between Athenes for late game oriented mages with a powerspike delayed until the 2. to 3. item while Morellos gives you a huge midgame powerspike. This would make those two items less similar.

Maybe something like 10% cdr for every 100 ap up to 20% total with the 10% cdr the item already has this would get you 30%

I like this idea. Especially since Meditation mastery has become more easily available and its essentially a slightly weaker manafont i think Morellonomicon will be the go to item as it also give ap and grievous wounds.

I don't think this is a good idea. Grail and Morello need to be decent generalist items because they're the only two options we have. The majority of the mage roster needs mana regen, so if we make the items for that more niche then you shaft anyone who doesn't fit into that niche. What if someone enjoys early pressure but is mana intensive? They can't use Grail because it needs items to scale with, but they can't use Morello because it doesn't give them the regen they need. People like Syndra are screwed over for the sake of making a system that's entirely functional more interesting. It'd be nice for mana regen choices to be more interesting, but it's not worth screwing over... any champions for that.

Now what they really could/should do is add more mana regen items - even one from Black Market Brawlers would be great. This adds choice to builds without having any potential for screwing over people who like the current items and is therefore pretty much... a better idea in every way. This wouldn't work if there was literally no differentiation between Morello and Athene's but personally I think they're more different than many say they are. My opinions:

When to use Morellonomicon:

  • Your mana use pattern is occasional bursts of mana use e.g. Leblanc will use QW and then may not use any other abilities in the next 20 seconds.
  • You are very reliant on a burst combo working correctly - the higher AP and Grievous Wounds passive make this a strong choice on people where deletion is very important.
  • The enemy's highest priority targets have strong sustain - this gives you a chance to counter high sustain ADCs, melee carries, and other sustain-based champions like Mundo.
  • You're snowballing and want the highest damage option as quickly as possible.
  • The enemy laner is AD-based, making early MR pointless.

When to use Grail:

  • You are very mana intensive, possibly based on using spells as often as possible. This applies most strongly to waveclear mages.
  • You like to whittle down enemies with consistent spell hits rahter than burst them down in one combo, so you can deal with the lower amount of AP and don't need the kill secure passive.
  • The enemy has strong AP-based threats or is lacking in AD outside of their ADC. Likely little sustain you need to deal with in this case, and MR is useful.
  • You're losing lane and need to farm safely rather than trying to engage. Grail lets you stick around longer to pick up CS, while Morello is stronger when fighting someone directly.
  • You expect to spend a lot of time clearing waves, whether it's because the enemy is planning to siege a lot, they have a waveclear mage on their team or you need to defend against splitpushers.

The CDR delay thing is pretty laughable on ER. It cost either 800 gold or 1200 gold, for a cloak or zeal, respectively, to get up to that 30% CDR, and that was going to be the next item you wanted regardless.

Most of the time you go back to buy ER, you get the crit to go with it at the same time.
