Stop QQing about silences

Silence: Free movement, can Basic attack, can be cleansed

Stun: Inability to do anything, can be reduced by tenacity, can be cleansed

Snare: Inability to move and cast spells which move you (JarvanIV Except for this guy), can auto attack and cast spells.

Knockup: Can't do anything against it 0 counter play.

Supress: Renders caster immobile, Inability to do anything, can't be reduced by tenacity, (Edit) can't be cleansed only item 3140.

So why do we QQ about silence guys. It's not that oppressive.

Silence is perfectly balanced, as long as it isn't on assassins. Riot understands this now.

The thing with silences is that they're extremely debilitating to certain types of champions, namely mages or other characters who are entirely or mostly dependent on their spells for damage output. If you silence an ADC, they don't care. Even some mages like Cho or Morde don't mind too much, since they have decent auto attacks (helped by Cho's spikes), so they can still fight alright. A silenced Veigar? What's he going to do, auto you to death? Blinds are the same to champions dependent on auto attacks (mainly ADCs, but also some top laners like Trynd and Fiora). I think people get freaked out over silences because 1) they're playing a champion who suffers a lot when silenced and 2) they're not super common, so people aren't used to them.

I think silences can work on some characters (Cho'Gath and Garen), but Kassadin's and LeBlanc's were positively asinine.

and talon talons slience was ridiculous

LordKentravyon4 votes

although certainly strong Talon's was nothing compared to LB and Kass

Talon you could almost make a case for and without it he is certainly hurting a bit (though not nearly as bad as many think) , the others you couldn't at all.

Divewing2 votes

+1 you sir. Talon's silence only made his lane matchups kinda annoying. It did nothing to solve the problem of no counterplay burst (0.7-1.2 second burst) and disgusting on-the-side-AoE damage (in fact, they actually gave him MORE damage by giving his e a slow). Talon's nerf was rushed, and as a result, didnt fix anything, and perhaps only made both parties worse off (Talons have silly matchups they shuld win they might not anymore a la KATARINA, and adcs get bursted even faster now cos slow on e)

T RexHasLongLegs1 votes

The issue is mobility and burst. LB and kass can jump in and jump out during science, cho is slow if his flash is down, and garen has melee range silence and no gap closer really.

Beoridas1 votes

i dont think these are really related and the reason why it was an issue. it was because of what the enemy could do WHILE silenced. and the nature of the dmg they ate at the same time. cho can do the same thing to a silenced target that lb and kass were doing. tho lb's theme dont fit with silence and never needed it, Kassadin was his theme.

T RexHasLongLegs1 votes

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm curious though, is that an issue in the spectrum of the game. Kass and LB silence made balance difficult bc they could kill someone w/out being punished. Even if they blew up the support, often they could do that w/ no backup and get away and set up the 4v5 while waiting till their skills came off cd. Cho is a force to be reckoned with if he gets to the right target bc if you have one fed carry on the team but lose hard w/out them and Cho gets close he can blow them up. However he isn't that mobile so you can at least try and prevent him from getting there or if the rest of the team isn't super behind and you can force his team back a little, you can focus him down easy (well kinda, he's tanky). Even if he's tanky and a burst assassin he has no way to get out and super long cool downs. Once he drops one person he's done for a little while and if your team can focus him before his team can follow up then you balance things out easy bc you can catch him when he goes in on people. I think for overall game health silence is fine if they don't have tons of mobility, but a lot of players will QQ about it because it requires you to either position really well so he can't pick you as his target bc he'd get focused down before he got to you, or it requires you to rely on your team to deal w/ him when he goes in or save you AND deal w/ him (like janna shield or lulu shield to save you and then tying him up long enough for silence to wear off and you burst him)

Beoridas1 votes

the thing with silence is that its reducible by tenacity. removable by QSS, mikaels and cleanse. and silence was never aoe but by cho and the new soraka. so one target could. but lets not forget. it doesnt prevent an adc to shoot you and re heal or move around. if leblanc decided to dive an enemy to kill someone, she better make sure she does it quick, silence or not. but she never needed it as i said. she already has two hard cc as it is. kassadin never had what she had.

Beoridas1 votes

i think kassadin role and what he represent did fit him. he was a predator to some champs that are out of line now because no one can oppose their casting. he was an anti mage. i dunno about the lenght if it was too long, but it wasnt the longest to my knowledge. Cho and garen and soraka had longer if not the same if i recall.

Talon and leblanc however...yea that was some crazy stuff. but i agree with OP. its a soft cc that can be cleanse and reduced by tenacity.

EDIT: back in the day, mikaels didnt exist either. now it does.

Volt Cruelerz9 votes

It depends on who it's on. Talon, LB, and Kassadin were mid lane assassins. They could jump on you, deal damage, and get away before you could even respond. Imagine if a meta support had a point-and-click blind. It would be a nightmare for bot lane. This is making me want to go Quinn+Teemo bot lane now...

On Garen, Choggy, and Malzahar, it's not so much an issue that they have silences because they aren't assassins (and Malzahar's is a skillshot that's easy to dodge).

Strawberrycocoa6 votes

I thought Supression was immune to Tenacity?

I also find it funny that you're telling people bitching about silence to be silent. ;P

Ice Weasel X6 votes

Just imagine how trollish silences would be if they completely silenced you. Pings? Disabled for the duration. Chat? Not just disabled, but if you were in the middle of typing something, your text would be cleared and your chat bar would be closed. Emotes? Shut down mid-spam.

CoolKnightST5 votes

If they remove the silence from Chogath I would really be pissed.

Champion Skin1 votes

That would almost be like removing Cho'gath from the game.... Unless they gave him something pretty good in return.. well he would still be kind of decent in lane i guess because of his sustain but his late game and teamfighting would suffer so much...

It would probably break cho'gath

Kazaashi4 votes

Lol Wiki on Suppression:

The target is unable to control movement, attack, cast abilities or summoner spells (including cleanse).

Will interrupt channeled abilities.

The duration is not affected by crowd control reduction.

The effect can be removed only by using item 3140 or item 3139 (summoner 1 is not an option since Suppression prevents summoner spell use).

Only Warwick Malzahar Skarner Urgot have it.

Warwick Urgot getting reworked. High chance they remove it.

Skarner is defines his kit

Malzahar is a difficult one, he is the only ones that both has Suppression & Silence in his kit. I swear it would become a lcs pick for this reason only...

Eraest971 votes

I don't think you will really see Mal in LCS. I mean you might (UOL might grab him), but in this meta mal isn't the best against tanks, and doesn't help that he has no escapes.

Urgot on the other hand can shred through tanks which is why he is played even though he has no escape like Mal.

But I will admit that Mal is a solo queue god if you know how to play him :D

What Is Smite1 votes

Malzahar's kit is made to shred through tanks and is quite effective in this meta, I don't play him personally but trying to kill malzahar as a tanky as hell nautilus with warmong's and just being killed to his combo when he is at 10% health sucks very much, and as an AP tank a QSS has literally no use to me.

Champion Skin1 votes

Well more like Malzahar's kit is made to demolish anyone he can get his hands on in a 1v1 as he can be a bit vulnerable if there are more people around as his ult locks him in place

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Actually every suppression effect currently in the game is a channel (except maybe Skarner's Impale) so if you just CC the suppressor it stops them from continuing. (Knock Warwick back, silence Malzahar).

Champion Skin1 votes

Well yeah... but Skarner ult doesn't really deal all that much damage and he needs his team to kill the target as 1 his ult doesn't deal all that much damage and he can't auto attack while he is suppressing someone with his ult

And if Skarner has his team around you probably should as well.. so they can you know... peel and protect each other from Skarner and prevent him from going anywhere

can NOT be reduced by tenacity, can NOT be cleansed, can only be QSSed.

DomainSpecific2 votes

The only issue I have is that we have more silences than blinds.

Heck, you didn't even mention in your OP. I think only Teemo and Quinn have blinds since they took it out from Heimer's.

kile1471 votes

I've always found that strange too, I think it's because silences hurt more equally than blinds. An adc still uses their abilities to amp their damage or to escape, so silencing them still does something, whereas blinding a caster does virtually nothing unless they are lich bane reliant.

SociopathFriend2 votes

Riot has only been removing the silences with little to no counterplay. Talon Point and click, jump to enemy, mash keyboard- nothing they can do about it. Kassadin Leblanc Had similar themes, couldn't really miss, couldn't fight back. And for all 3 of them that would be literally every single trade.

Now let's look at the silences Riot had let stand Malzahar Skillshot with a delay; counterplay? Dodge. Chogath Extremely close range and is easier to dodge the closer he is to you; again, dodge. Fiddlesticks Point and click, but again; short range. It's also a grievously short silence unless it bounces to you again- more counterplay. Garen AA-buff, meaning he has to be literally in your face for it to work. And the people he uses it on typically can still fight back (cept Riven )

Now, the argument can be made for Chogath ,Malzahar , and Fiddlesticks that their silences are unfair because they can be chained into their kits- well YEAH, that's the point of a kit. The biggest difference is how you can deal with it- when Kassadin Leblanc Talon jumped onto an AP mid- the enemy could do nothing against them as it would be free damage that they could not respond to.

It doesn't bounce again and silence.

Champion Skin1 votes

Well it used to refresh the silence when it bounced though if I remember right they nerfed fiddle by making it avoid hitting the same target twice (unless no other targets to bounce to)

IcyPepper2 votes

Knockup: Can't do anything against it 0 counter play.

Some knockups can be dodged relatively easily, such as Cho'Gath's. Others are somewhere in between, such as Vi, depending on your reflexes and their plan on hitting you.

PerishSoftly2 votes

The problem there is that you can dodge pretty much any other form of CC with the same results (targeted skills aside). Dodging is the "universal counterplay" and therefore doesn't really count.

YOU BEEN WARNED1 votes

Lol go ahead and dodge Soraka's silence then. It's instant, because if you're in it's range both you and Soraka are out of position.

Zed I was Supposed to be behind that ADC. I just couldn't escape after I got there. Don't worry, I already submitted a bug report.

Why would Zed dive into a 1v2? That implies his team is already losing.

kile1471 votes

Or you could stay out of range of it, or you could wait until they blow it and then go in, or you could cleanse (or QSS item 3140) it if you really feel like tanking it. Or just let it hit and you walk away from the enemies since most champs with silences require their team to follow up on it.

yet Riot has been removing silences right and left I don't even get why they did it to viktor he was fine. they should be removing point and click suppress since it has only 1 thing that counters it. Like I gotta buy sash or item 3137 just to counter ww?

Who cares if suppression is difficult to remove? The person suppressing you is literally crowd controlling themselves at the same time.

Wheatloaf1 votes

Except Skarner, but he has the only suppress that can't be cast at range.

Champion Skin1 votes

Well yeah but it prevents Skarner from auto attacking which is usually quite a bit of his damage

Wheatloaf1 votes

afaik he only can't attack his ult target, because attempting to do so essentially has him chasing his tail.

Champion Skin1 votes

Well yeah... but then again you are unlikely to ever want to auto attack anyone other then the target you ult... after all there is probably a reason you ulted that target
