I miss the days when you could build Shyvana as a Bruiser

I remember when I was new to the game in season 7, I saw a video by Foxdrop. This video was teaching people who to play Shyvana in the jungle. Now, I didn't know much about Shyvana or jungling at the time. All i knew was that shyvana was a dragon, and I loved dragons. So I thought I'd give it a watch.

I watched the whole video, intrigued. Foxdrop spoke about how good Shyvana was as a counter-jungler and a duelist. These terms didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time being quite new to the game, but still I watched. Despite me being a person who isn't very good at sitting down and watching videos, especially long ones of other people playing video games, I watched through the whole 30 minute video. I wanted to play Shyvana. And play Shyvana I did. I mained her for ages.

What I loved about Shyvana was her potential to duel, and her potential to counterjungle, and her potential to split-push. Those are 3 traits I love in champions today, and it shows in my main champs - Warwick, who has a fantastic dueling potential, and Kayn, who has incredible counter-jungling. The only thing Shyvana missed that my mains had was insane map pressure in the form of movementspeed buffs or walking through walls.

But that champion I loved to play is pretty long gone now, what with the AP Shyvana build kicking off and regular AD Shyvana becoming weak. I dont like it. AP Shyvana makes her into...I don't even know. An Assassin? A burst mage? Both of those categories are NOT the champion I loved to play two years ago. I loved that feeling of power when I would become a dragon and easily 1v2, maybe 1v3 depending on how fed I was, the enemy team. That's gone now.

I hope that with Shyvana's (hopefully) upcoming rework, they'll address this and make Shyvana back into the counterjungling menace she once was.

First things first: You love a champ? NEVER EVER ASK FOR A REWORK! Reworks make a champ more interesting for the masses NOT the few mains!

With that out of the way: Shyvana is a powerfarmer, you don't beat any opponent via superior micro but with superior macro! The items you build while doing so actually don't matter AT ALL! You dont need X-Item to spike and roll, you simply need as much or more items than your opponent. Shyvana scales with everything! AS, AD, AP, HP it doesn't matter! Shyvana is a stat-checker in that regard - I don't consider this bad, tho! You have more stats than your opponent, you win - is that bad? NO! Because you had to work to get this stats earlier and now you're rewarded for it!

Problem is: Powerfarming JGL is DEAD! It's not meant to be done, makes your team loose and doesn't pay off compared to solo-lanes! People switched to AP-Shyv because she has better clear and has more snowball potential, but snowballing does not actually SOLVE the issue! It's a risky workaround!

That being said: I no longer consider Shyvana a JGL! She scales, works and plays like a high budget, high level solo-laner! Which is exactly where I play her succesfully. As a all-time midlaner I play her as an AP-Mid most of the time to fix the teams lack of magic DMG but whenever I end up with a magic heavy team or land top I pick the Bruiser route with no issues what so ever. And she's amaring! Her natural resistances give you decent to great matchups into the meta, she can deal with both poke and all ins and she has amazing lane-controll very few items in which allows you presure almost every opponent and use every oppotunity you can find to burn through their towers making a fortune from plates. (Which got BUFFED even more last patch!)

I recommend you to think outside the box. Almost every Item in the entire shop is worth thinking about and can be a great choice for what ever scenario you find your selfe in. You're insanely adaptable and able opt into almost every build at almost every stage of the game. Don't shoehorn your selfe into the builds you're used to!

Considering runes IMO Shyvana has 3 viable ones:

  • Conquerer: Which she's able to stack insanely fast on all-ins and gives massive sustain in combination with other omnivamp item 3156 / item 3146. AP is a great stat on her. Just accept this fact and use it! Gunblade especially is AMAZING even.. or better especially for the AD-Bruiser route! item 3078intoitem 3146 ? Why not, just do it! Than a item 3083 , given your team has a drake or two which renders it insanely efficient and opens up a very powerfull item 3053 or item 3748. Yes this stuff is expensive, but that's the whole point! As Shyvana you're given every tool you could ever ask for to get this much money. Being able to take summoner 12 over summoner 11 is huge plus in this regard since it allows you to keep the gold flowing on splitting-duty without abandoning your team!
  • Comet: Which gives you a better early laning but falls of compared to the one above. (Still my usual choice since playing without a keystone in mid until 6 is... let's call that not quite educated)
  • DarkHarvest: The least interesting cause most snowbally for me but not mentioning it would be wrong. Also I hate the entire domination tree on her outside of Ravenous!

As a sidenote: I love AP-Shyvana, there is little to nothing more satisfying in this whole game than being a big flaming Dragon obliterating and entire enemy team with this one juicy 200IQ Fireball accross a wall that hits 4 people!

Blade into PD? That would actually work. xD

It's not like AD shyv is weak, its just that AP shyv has cheesy levels of damage

She is truly weak, doesnt deal enough damage or soak enough of it to be really useful unless snowballing.

And even if snowballing i´d say she´s only really good up until 2-3 items after which she starts falling off real fast going by her usual build.

Trundle is in the same boat. His normal tanky build is weak, since defensive stats in general suck right now, so he's been played with full damage items. I hate that playstyle as it's not how he's meant to be played. If damage didn't outscale defense so much champs like Shyv and Trundle could go back to having balanced builds again.

They can still work, but you're generally making more work for yourself by not rushing damage.

I miss the days when Trundle vs Shyvana Top was the meta but you could still beat both of them with many champions, unlike current metas...I miss those days

When her AP build became meta, I never even looked back. That style of shyvana just isn't appealing.

In lower elo where powerfarming can work out, indeed the classic On-hit Shyvana still has the upper hand. However in high elo where powerfarming equals trolling AP is the only viable route due to superior cleartimes, earlier windows of power and a high snowball potential.

tl;dr Thank gank-meta and the jungle changes more than the changes to her as a champ

I do think this is correct.

Yellow enchant has almost a 30% pickrate and 52% winrate in plat+, and I assume that's what you'd get if you were running bruiser on her.

Seems less popular, but not really far enough out of meta to consider it dead.

I'm kinda hoping when Shyvana gets her VGU they turn her into a proper bruiser.

Uh still is good just why play shyv when you can play burst damage champs its Cool vs Easier Wins

You still do build Shyvana as a TDPS.

I still play AD shyv, rotate between PtA and Conq depending on matchups. Its very item dependant as well.

What I don't like is how flex is now super flex.

Does it make sense to face a Diamond 2 player that admits being on a loosing streak from Master to Diamond 2 and gets paired with bronze, silver, gold, plat players...

just because his MMR is lacking right now and just because im at 55%-60% winning rate on flex, doesnt mean that I need to face MASTER rank players..

At High rank with AD Shyv you want to be taking the objectives early, if you cant gank early for whatever reason then recall early and get stalkers blade at 3 mins ish then you can prolly dragon at 6 mins or early.

I was trying to see what you build to help optimize your AD Shyvana build, but you don't play her. lol

You can try 2 things.

Hydra or FM, which have great success. Or top SoS Wits end into Thorn/SV.

Both are very good, AP Shyvana is just better at high elo for a slew of reasons, but AD is great for anything below D4. AD Shyvana is just very situational beyond that.

Do you really want to see Shyvana though? She counters Kayn hard. Lol

Splitpushing is a dead art in most elos. The closest it gets to that nowadays is roaming and counterjungling, since teamfights are so fast and swingy now that everyone possible needs to be present for them.

Doopliss71 votes

arent they changing the jungle so that camps spawn sooner? doesnt tht mean power farming will be a little more of a thing you can do now?

Shyvana? Is that a new champ?
