Renekton.....useless?

Hi everyone,

I haven't played Renekton since his changes back in 5.1 I know that there was an argument being made that some of his power was being shifted towards the late game and champion pvp interaction.

Can anyone provide me with their experiences with him top lane?

I just played a game with Renekton against Gnar. Even with a 1/0/2 start to lane thanks to successful ganks by Kha'zix I got destroyed by him 1v1. His rage generated faster and provided more utility to him than mine, his mini gnar w passive shredded through my armor and stacked health and even with my ultimate helping me to sustain a bit in fight there was no escaping him in either form.

We won the game, I ended up 3/9/24 and was happy with my job as the sole tank in the game, but in all of our team fights I really had so much less impact than the enemy gnar, who ended 11/12/16I think.

This is not a rant, this is not a qq. This is me reaching out to players with more game experience with renekton in season 5. Is he viable in the current meta? Where does he rank for you in terms of top lane tank?

First off, why did you take flash smite top? That is the first mistake because flash and tele/ignite/exhaust are mandatory on Renekton.

Secondly, max your W first. Start cloth 5. If you are up against a Gnar, you will get harassed pretty hard.

That being said, try to get Tiamat as your first item, then build into Ravenous Hydra and Black Cleaver.

By that time, you should be hitting for crazy amounts with his empowered W.

You become more and more useless as the game goes on. So, buy Sunfire Warmogs and Spirit visage and try to reach their ADC and end as more of a tank than a fighter.

He is a pretty solid top laner, and is kind of the opposite of Nasus, as his early game is his highest point, weakest being late game

Yeah, he's viable. But he's not a tank.

Renekton is a fighter. While you can build all tank items and be a beefy front line for your team, it's much more effective for the main tank to come from elsewhere. A Leona bot, a Sejuani jungle, etc. Because Renekton needs to deal damage to reach his full potential. Renekton is a better offtank, taking some damage while dealing sustained damage just by existing beside enemies during Dominus and using Cull the Meek.

He's extremely aggressive during laning. You know that. Use that to secure CS and rush either a Ravenous Hydra, Blade of the Ruined King, or the new Black Cleaver. Let the other tank engage unless you get the chance to catch someone out with Ruthless Predator. And after that, Slice and Dice onto the enemy Marksman's face and MAKE THEM FUCKING BLEEEEEEEEEEED.

I too enjoy playing Renekton. He was my main top laner for a while. I favor Sion nowadays, but with Renekton's buff tomorrow I may favor him again.
