Sion, the Undead *Juggernaut*

Sion's rework was a resounding success. Across the board, almost everyone loved what Riot did with him. He was almost a perfect champion - He had strong abilities that synergized, his thematics were all perfectly matching his abilities, his visuals and audio are both stellar, and, almost best of all, he was meta. You could take Sion into top or jungle and consistently find success.

More recently, however, nerfs to Sion (Which were needed) have shifted his play pattern. Before, Sion was indeed a juggernaut. He was a damage force who's sustained damage and crowd control in a teamfight could not be ignored. However, people started to build him as a super tank, and indeed, Sion was just a wall of flesh and iron that could not be broken through. This became his most dominant identity, which it is to this day, but I have to question if this is the direction Riot had planned for Sion, for a few reasons.

Anyone remember when Sion's rework first came out? He was tagged as a 'Fighter'. Now, he's tagged as a 'Tank'. This shift shows that Riot settled for the new 'super tank' playstyle some players had adopted with him.

Remember his champion spotlight? One of the suggested items is item 3074. I've rarely seen it built to this day, but we saw it being used in the spotlight.

Perhaps most evident, Sion has purchase quotes for SO MANY offensive items. item 3071 item 3156 item 3153 item 3072 item 3022 item 3025. Even item 3031.

item 3031 Which Sion, in their right mind, would buy item 3031?

Anyways, back to the point. Riot clearly had a vision for him, a vision of him not just being a big wall, but also a damage threat, which he was originally before nerfs. This vision matches his personality and thematics, and I think it's a vision that should be reiterated upon.

Make Sion a Juggernaut. Like Garen, Darius, Skarner, and Mordekaiser. Hell, it's right there in his title.

How would we promote this? Well, Riot would need to be careful. Too much damage, and he'll become super dominant again. Not enough, and people will just use whatever is given to him to tank more effectively. I have a few suggestions:

  1. Tie most of his 'Juggernaut'ness to his passive. When Sion dies, currently, his passive isn't much of a threat. Sometimes it can net you a lucky kill, but mostly, you'll just pick up some extra CS. I would suggest: Slightly increase the Attack Speed bonus. Make Death Surge remove crowd control. Increase his base MS by a small amount while he's raging. Make kills and assists reset the cooldown on Death Surge and reset the health decay rate. This way, Sion will still be kitable, but he has a chance to actually catch someone and rip them apart. The enemy would need to stagger their CC, and the Sion player could cleverly use Death Surge to avoid CC.

  2. Increase his base AS a little bit. This wouldn't stack with the set AS during his passive, of course, but I think it would promote building item 3748. Would also make CSing a bit easier, which helps promote Sion's strong laning phase.

  3. Increase the scaling of his W. Currently, it's 6/7/8/9/10%. I suggest 7/9/11/13/14%, while nerfing the base amount to 30/50/70/90/110. This will promote building the health-heavy items that Juggernauts favor, like item 3748 item 3053 and item 3068. Early game, the shield will be similar, but late game. when detonating it isn't as practical as letting it absorb damage, it'll account for much more.

  4. Lastly. Make it so he can detonate his shield after 2 seconds again. Currently, it's really difficult to pull off the Decimating Smash+Blood Furnace eruption combo in lane, because it takes so long to detonate. Combined with the fact that the shield is really easy to break at early ranks(A minion wave can break it), and he almost never gets to use the detonation anymore. This, combined with the change in #3, will let him effectively pull off that pushing/lane bullying combo. The counterplay is simple - Stay away from Decimating Smash. Maybe buy some early boots.

TL:DR: Make Sion a Juggernaut, instead of a wet noodle-hitting tank. Sion

Never will happen. He has to much CC in his kit to be a juggernaut. That one thing that was lest for what make a juggernaut was very little hard cc.

Two easily avoidable knockups, and a slow?

He's not kike Malphite or Sejuani, with fast, long lasting CC. His is heavily telegraphed, which balances it out.

His Q has a 50% slow if charge less for a sec and if more then that then it will knockup for 1.25 - 2.25 seconds. Winch is a lot longer then Sej Q. It all so have a much shorter cool down. You can all so hit a lot more people with it then Sej. Maphite is better but you are talking about his R winch is on a much longer cooldown. As for his R. It's not a knockup but a stun that can last as long as 1.75 seconds if done right winch is not to hard.

If we look at the Juggernauts. The only one with any sort of hard cc is Skarner. Winch can only work on one person at a time. I think that is the big reason why Sion is a tank. He can CC easy two or three people if not the a full team if you are good enough or luck.

Quick question:

Why should you build a Sunfire over Deadman's plate?

To this day, I've hardly built the Sunfire, in favour of the more armor and health from the past Randuin (RIP). Now I build DMP, even on supports. This allows me to get that extra intimidation off, by showing them i can move fast, and deliver damage while not getting hurt.

Dead Man's Plate would be a good option, too.

Sunfire is better for lane pushing, and making your damage mixed instead of all physical. I'd rather have Sunfire in lane, but I'd rather have DMP late game.

Sunfire does more DPS than you think it does.

I don't think it looks horrible, definitely has some counter play. My only suggestion would be that death surge's removal of cc can only happen once or twice instead of the four and if he gets the assist with the reset on that.....ouch. If it only removed slows and allowed one remove of a root, stun, etc. (think Olaf ult) so he can get 4 QSS if he gets the assist that would also allow for more counter play. Besides that I think Sion juggernaut would work and I'd like to see it, but it wouldn't happen for awhile with Rito looking to make Shy and Olaf into Juggernauts.

Remove everything except stun and suppress?

Sion can do both super well though. I build him "juggernaut" style. Ideally Black Cleaver with the rest being tank items. He has such high damage because of his W % health damage. A fully extended ultimate charge deals tons of damage with just a pickaxe, even.

I personally wouldn't like tank Sion to be nerfed because he's the easiest and best damage soaker in the game right now. He's got a shit ton of disruption and his kit is heavily forgiving. Not knocking people up with Q still applies a hefty slow, coupled with E and ultimate they can't escape without flashing. The crazy thing is a little less than half of his damage comes from his W when you take into account targets dodging your Q knock-up and ultimate in generic fights.
