Riot is Removing Dominion

SociopathFriend··23 votes·1,086 views

Oh well, not like anyone plays the mode anyways. I wouldn't put thousands of dollars of work into a mode enjoyed by less than 1% of the playerbase either- substantial waste of resources that could be used elsewhere that players would actually get benefits from.

God forbid a business make a good business decision.

I also noticed a statistic in the community here as well. 1% is filled with people who understand Riot and their decisions 100%, and know how everything works. 19% is filled with people who are slightly confused but nonetheless love Riot. 30% is filled with neutral people. The rest is filled with jerks. You fit in the 1%. You are a good person.

I notice that most of the people who actually understand Riot are people who understand business. If you do the math on how much $ they can reasonably expect to make from Dominion, it isn't much. They can't support it and expect to continue to be successful.

People whine about money all the time, but Rioters have families to feed... they CAN'T make decisions to compromise their job as responsible adults. Riot needs to make money so they can feed themselves. The people who don't understand this are people who don't understand that responsibility.

Yea, 1 Billion Dollars can barely afford what they have in all honesty. When it was smaller, maybe it was a lot, but now? So many Rioters, so much pay to them. Then there is the LCS, which probably takes half of that if not MORE. That's including the stage and place as well as workers there of course. Don't forget that servers exist. Honestly, people overestimate shit. And who's to say they actually have that much money?

ModKnightsKemplar3 votes

Well, you can get some soft numbers, at least for 2014, if you poke around a bit. They grossed over $900 million from Jan-Sep in 2014, for instance. I'm having trouble finding that link now... but it seemed trustworthy at the time XP

All I can find now are articles from 2014 that say they were "on track" to make over $1 billion. Anyway, we can be reasonably sure they are making that. But yeah, the salaries of that many software engineers... not cheap. Especially if you want good ones, and I have secondhand info that they only take the best (or what they consider to be the best).

So... yeah. They are making a great game for us, and we should be glad that they want it to continue. They can't appease everyone, especially if those people aren't brining revenue. So... sorry dominion players. I really am. I wish it could stick around and be balanced, but it doesn't surprise me that it can't, and I won't flame Riot for it. It's the right choice.

THis exactly. Queue time up hours and when you finally get a match it's with bots. Why the ever living goose berry fudge would I keep that mode around? It's a waste of time, waste of money.

Wait. Is someone actually using logic on the boards?

IT'S THE END TIMES! THE END TIMES I TELL YOU!

"thousands of dollars" they never put anything in it in 5 years...

you need other modes to take break for SR ,heroes of storm offers 10 different maps ,why shouldnt riot ?

SociopathFriend1 votes

Does Heroes of the Storm have a map that less than 1% of their playerbase uses? If they do and keep it up- that's not a good business decision on their part.

1% of the playerbase = 270,000. at least 90,000 of those being paying customers.

Quit giving people misleading info.

If you compare that to 99% of the player base who don't care about Dominion and using your 1/3 pay stat, 33% of players who pay don't care about Dominion, that significantly dwarfs your number. So yeah, OP is not being misleading.

Say McDonalds offered goat milk, but only 1% of their consumers ever bought it. It would make little sense to dump money into goat milk when it is clear that it makes you very little money, so they would cut it from the menu.

You really can't use that statistic, not at all. McDonald's is a multi-billion dollar industry whereas Riot sits at a mere 1/100th or less of that. Additionally, McDonald's serves an exponentially higher amount of people than Riot Games does. And besides that fact, McDonald's isn't a free to play industry. It's like you saying Riot is comparable to McDonald's, if it was, you would get free meals there. You can't say these two dissimilar things are similar at all.

It's a funny trend, where misleading information attracts mislead people.

Also,

33% of players who pay don't care about Dominion

Who are you to speak for these people? Do you know them? No. Why do you choose to still mislead?

Lauchmelder3 votes

Well, who are you dominion players to demand Riot to keep dominion because "we" enjoy it. 0.5% of all players enjoyed it. There is no "we", there is only a "you".

Sure, Riot could have done a bit more to promote Dominion. I'm not denying that. But just think logically:

You own a Battlefield 4 and a Minecraft server. The BF4 server has 64 slots and costs you 1600€ a year (I have no idea how much a Nitrado server costs) and the Minecraft server also has 64 Slots costing the same. The MC Server is always full and people even wait to get into this server, there are even queues to get into it. Meanwhile your BF4 server is completely empty 24/7.

Would you still pay that 1600€ for a service nobody uses even though you could easily pay for it with donations from your Minecraft server? I know I wouldn't. Instead I would stop the BF4 Server and invest more money into the Minecraft one and increase the available slots to 128.

Note: € or $, whatever you prefer. And with nobody using the Service I mean 1 or 2 Players that join up once a week.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

The average player spends $1.32 a year on this game. It isn't enough to support that mode, any way you slice it. And many of those accounts are bots, as we all know.

SociopathFriend1 votes

Actually it's a ton less- because it's not even 1%- it's 0.5%. And it's not the total playerbase, but the playerbase with access to it. AND the percentage ignores how many bots are in the mode (a lot).

So it's a percentage of a fraction, buffed by cheating numbers.

The irony here, is the community died because Riot put no work into it. It's circular logic. The community died because Riot didn't support it. Riot didn't support it because the community died.

They made 1.6 billion dollars in profits alone this year. With all the SR servers, that's probably a billion or more alone. With TT and ARAM, probably half a billion-ish. With Dominion which is rarely if ever played, maybe a couple hundred million for every server around the world. Tell, me, what the fuck is Riot going to spend 1.6+ billion dollars on, and why do they need more? So far as I've seen, they aren't working on making any other games. The only one they ever did was a LoL teaser on the iPod which was a League of Legends themed Tower Defense game. They aren't really making any new game modes to take Dominion's place. The best they do is that new gamemode every half a year or so for a couple weeks.

Maybe if they actually tried to make Dominion popular, by, I don't know, making it look even a tad nicer, or just having /ALL Chat talk about it, it would get another several % of the community playing it again, at least for awhile. Seriously, when was the last time they updated it? Even with a lot of the community asking for Ranked Dominion so they'd have more of a reason to play it or for people who love it to play competitively, they never did anything. Not a single thing. They fixed a few bugs that would happen with the constant changing of League(probably not even a hundred with how little anything affected it), and they added the effect of champions holding up their hands to capture a point.

Finally, someone that sees the logic behind Riot's decision instead of "GG FKN RITO, WHY YOU ATTACKING ME, WORST COMPANY EVER" like I've seen over the last two days.

Reminds me of the people that rage at their team mates for every little mistake.

The last time Dominion had any change that wasn't done to TT and/or ARAM was June 10 2015. The last time before that was over a year ago and I don't feel like continuing to go through the patches trying to find the sparse changes.

Right, lets go at bare minimum and just mention servers- only the servers.

  1. Hardware- the server itself. For high-traffic servers you'll be paying thousands of dollars, if not tens of thousands.
  2. Software- the stuff to run it. Fun fact, even small stuff like email-servers typically will be over $500. Now remember how much more data LoL has to send back and forth every second and think about how much that costs.
  3. People- you know those thousands of dollars in the first two? That's typically only like 15% of the total cost of running a server. You have to pay to have it setup, pay to have it maintained, pay to have it upgraded, pay to replace hardware or software that expires, pay pay pay pay.

Do people seriously think because Riot hasn't been changing the mode that much that they didn't put money into it? Cool- go buy a server and put a smiley-face site on it or something. Call me back in a few months and tell me it didn't cost anything.

Considering that fact that they:

  1. Didn't bring back The Tribunal (When they said they would)
  2. Didn't keep The Harrowing as a Halloween specific event (That they claimed was related to Halloween originally)
  3. Didn't create the Snowdown map skin for Summoner's Rift (That they said they would)
  4. Didn't lower Caitlyn's cost to purchase (Like they promised they would)
  5. Didn't release Ao Shin (Like they claimed was in the works)
  6. Didn't release a ranked mode for Dominion (Like they claimed they were ready to do)
  7. Didn't mini-rework Lee Sin (Like they claimed they were looking at doing) (Among other things)

I'm reluctant to believe that they have any plans to actually use those "resources" that they are moving from Dominion into Summoner's Rift.

And THAT'S what I'm actually angry about.

Not Dominion's removal.

It's the fact that I have no reason to believe that removing Dominion is anything outside of Riot just wanting to do less work.
