Make his R come from around of him, instead from his center.

What this would do is make it much wider at the start, making him able to use it better defensively.

I believe what you mean is that when his ult hits a champion, instead of searching out other enemy champions by that champion it would come from Varus so that hitting a backline would allow Varus to have some more safety against bruisers. I disagree, I usually use my ult for when an tank or bruiser is getting too close and they're team is by them so that we can kill them where they stand. (HOPEFULLY) And anyone by the bruiser would have to reposition or our team moves in on them.

No, the function once it leaves him does not change.

What I mean is that currently when he fires it. It's a strait line from him. With this change the projectile would be wider, just at the start. So if someone is in his face it'll hit them. Giving him a stronger defense vs all the mobility. Even with the width increase they gave it his ult is still very easy to miss.

For example the Width would be increased to say 250 for the first 150(melee range) or so units, then back to the current 140(? I think) as it travels it's normal path.

Na. They'd just give his R a second cast like the rest of his abilities. Giving him a free cleanse.

Since it's his ult, it'd of course cost nothing to use it.

I support this idea. I had a game as him yesterday and went into mid game 5-2-2, but every team fight, the enemy Leblanc who I had shut down really hard during lane phase would jump on me, and since she got so close my ult could almost never hit her when I was trying to self peel.

yeah i know what you mean, same issue with other champs (like sona) when you want to ult someone to peel yourself and they are in melee range sometimes they get behind you and dodge it randomly. braum's ult is the first that hits around him and in a line, which is amazing.
