Mage Viability

It's really sad to see that only a few mages are ever truly viable at any given time now-a-days. I'm tired of seeing the safe, easy to use, high damage, low risk mages in every game. Why bother picking high risk skillshot champs like Lux or Xerath when the reward is the same with safer picks like the boring old Orianna ,Syndra, Cassiopeia,Taliyah ? The problem with mages is that even though they're SUPPOSED to be the magical bursty class, only the ones with short cd aoe/targetted and therefore high dps mages are picked. Gone are the days where hard to land skillshot combos are rewarded with mages. The risk is simply too high. With AP items constantly getting the shaft in terms of cost efficiency compared to AD items, it seems the pool of viable mages keeps shrinking smaller and smaller. Let's not even mention how these same champions require half the mana, time, and sometimes even half the cds (Viktor ) needed to clear waves. Don't get me wrong, I know buffing long range mages would just let them 100-0 you from fog of war, but I'd really like to see these risky picks have higher payoffs than they do now. Burst means almost nothing this season with the clusterfuck of shields and heals flying around, but at least AD assassins hardly ever have to land single target skillshots to do their job, and even so, their auto attacks still hurt like trucks while long range mages have to sit around sucking their thumbs until their cds are up again once they miss. Overall, I feel like this season has the been the worst season in terms of champion viability and I'm not expecting Rito to have any bright ideas... ever really. Until then, let's just all play the good ol AD Ranged Point Click Sustained Burst DPS sub-class consisting of Draven Twitch Vayne Tristana

What's with the circlejerk of mages being unviable? Literally on op.gg there are 7 mages that have above 53% win rate, Xerath being one of them, while Lux has a slightly less win rate of 52.60%. Literally just scroll through and you can see over 10 having over 50% win rate, with many having above 52%, and this is diamond stats.

AP revamp announced early next season. Was in one of Meddler's posts a while back. I'm hoping for more magic pen options and a wider selection of first items. Morella being mandatory on 80% of mages feels terrible and Rhylais has been in the gutter for way too long.

Taliyah being a safe pick? She's anything but safe unless you consider good roaming potential "safe". She gets screwed over by any other mage in terms of burst by level 9. Lux is a lot more safe with the amount of dueling, burst, and reliable disengage potential she possesses.

How are those champions safer than Lux and Xerath? With Lux and Xerath all you do is stand back and spam ur abilities. The reason the other champions are played more is because they are more team-oriented. Cass has amazing DPS and a good ult, Orianna's ult is a game changer, a Taliyah wall can get one of your other lanes kills and get you a lead, and Syndra has good damage, an instakill ult, and can stun a lot of targets with her E.

What do Lux or Xerath offer? Poke. That's about it. Poke champions are not risky picks. They are safe picks. And if you wanna play Xerath, play Xerath. He has one of the highest win rates in the game after you have 150+ games with him. He is extremely viable.

How is Taliyah boring? She doesn't focus on farming nearly as much as the rest of those, and tries to make good plays that will snowball the game; her lategame is much worse than other high tier picks.

that's literally every class.

How tf is lux or xerath high risk theyre some of the safer mages. Hell out of the list you showed Ori is probably the only one safer than them. And most mages are perfectly viable tbh and theres a few who just have to be careful about his matchups like Vik but most of them can easily burst an adc from a range where they dont need to worry about the adc lifestealing the damage from a mage since most of the mages arent given delays to be considered counterplay

I mean, the same applies for every other class. There's only ever 3-5 viable champions for each class at any given time. And please don't misunderstand, when I say viable I mean you can pick them regardless of experience on the champion or comp and still find success.

Lux and Xerath are actually the safest mages in the game.

Go watch CLG vs IMT

Huhi picked Velkoz into Lucian. It was sad to see and hear the Caster questioning why the Velkoz was defeated by Lucian by the dragon pit even when Abel had a thresh on his side.

It was clear to see why. The Lucian's damage was unavoidable. The Velkoz missed his 1 of his abilities due to the mobility of Lucian. The mobility creep does hurt the game when you have such easy telegraphed skill shots

Yeah Xerath and Lux are so high risk.

Keepe9/25/2017, 9:31:21 PM1 votes

Lux is considered High Risk? Xerath, certainly, but Lux?

Dream High9/25/2017, 9:34:03 PM1 votes

I've been playing Lux recently, she sucks just like every other burst mage. You just don't have the damage to even reliably kill "squishies" unless you're fed.

Blåbæret9/25/2017, 11:42:09 PM1 votes

Because mages don't have the damage anymore to kill anything. You only pick them for utility. Even burst mages can't take down an ADC. It's what happens when Riot has been systematically nerfing AP champions and their itemization.
