I need some help. How do I get out of plat 5?

I thought that the last few patches were pretty unstable so that might be a reason why you have been stagnant. This patch though seems to be better at least it feels that way. I would go play different champions in normal and then you will get the crave to play your mains again and maybe then go back to rank. I guess my recommendation is take a break, or play only like a single rank game a night for a while.

Just like any other league - you get better + luck. I like the explanation i heard once - 40% you must lose, 40% you must win. What makes you to climb higher is those crucial 20% where you will influence the outcome. If in those 20% you will be outstandingly better than the rest Plat 5 players, than you will have a higher chance than 40% of winning (40%+20%).
