Support Needs Attention

I've mained support for 4 seasons. It has had its ups and downs. My favorite time was probably the beginning of season 5, there were some unique builds (blue cinderhulk Sion, wha?) and a wide variety of options. Sightstone was strong enough that I could reasonably ward and still maintain control over the game. Though it still certainly had its weaknesses--I'm still unclear on the trinkets vs greens. The inevitable duality of bot lane tends to be that way. Some mistakes by either the support or adc are simply too onerous to carry. Or, at least, the probability is very low.

There's a lot I can say on this topic. I've had the opportunity to play with Bronze->Master players in my lane/on my team. I'm no expert, certainly, but I could probably coach now and then, even if I'm too fat to get on the court with the best of them.

Vision: My primary concern is here. Right now this system is very very susceptible to snowball. For example, if, as support, my lane starts to win, I can actually ignore sightstone. This is not troll. With 2-3 blue trinkets and 1-3 pinks on the team, we can satisfactorily keep defensive vision to stop invades. And with the 800+ gold spent on rushing something like sunfire, I can exert immense control on the game, in fact, it's often the difference in teamfights. Having a 2nd/3rd tank on the team to peel/frontline is crazy.

Vision is just poor this season. It's interactions are poor, it's steamrolly, and it does not contribute to enjoyable team dynamics. For example, if my team is winning and I do choose to go sightstone/red trinket, I can completely shutdown any defensive wards they have. There's nothing they can do to keep up vision. It's so EASY to deny them.

Enjoyability: Support has always been a bit of a lackluster roll. Like the linemen on a football team, it tends to operate in the essential shadows. However, when choosing to play a proper support role, and trying to manage the vision game (see previous) the enjoyment is horrendous. I can only place THREE wards before having to recall. My upgrade option 2 for sighstone gives me 4 (gasp) and it never replenshes unless I recall. What's more, I give up some seriously strong items to get that 4th ward. The vision game is just tor·tu·ous, and makes the entire role of support very unappealing. Which is why I get games in less than 5 seconds when I press 'queue'.

There are other aspects that concern me such as breadth of viable support types, etc, but I'll just focus on vision for now. It could use a serious overhaul.

The support role just became verry differently as a support:

  • In season 5 you created advantages all on your own
  • Now 6 you create your advantages based on a snowball from others.

This means that supports have a harder time to snowball the game individualy like you mentioned in your post. If your midlane has the pressure in his lane the additional vision you purchase won't give you an additional advantage. But in the opposite scenario when your midlane doesn't have the pressure you need to purchase this vision just to prevent gaining a disadvantage. And this only counts on the side between bot & mid. You will still gain an disvantage on the other sides. Basicly:

  • You do your job perfectly nothing happends unless one of your teammates is snowballing.
  • You do your job nothing happends.
  • You don't do your job you will surely lose the game.

Basicly in an average game you have to overperform in order to gain an advantage for your team. The problem is when underperforming the disadvantage is just way bigger compaired to other roles. This makes the role so underwhelming but overwhelming when the role is been buffed to drasticly (season 5).

I have to add the fact that wards now only last 2:30 minutes is pathetic.
