Name one way towers defend players.
de·fend
verb resist an attack made on (someone or something); protect from harm or danger.
I'll edit the answers into the op upon discovery:
Scarecrow tactics. Mind games.

The tower defends the enemy player's ego by lulling the defender into a false sense of security so that the attacker can easily dive them and get a free kill to impress their friends. If the tower wasn't there the defender would have just run out of range and the attacker's friends would think they are bad for not securing the kill.
That's how towers defend players.
Bravo!
Champions are supposed to defend towers, not the other way around. The tower has some means to defend itself. It's not really there to protect the champions, though, frankly.
It's really hard to defend a tower. Also, I'm pretty sure Riot hates that play style judging by how they wouldn't let Janna do her thing.
I think Riot wants champions to attack. Attacking leads to winning. Defending leads to immortality. Just my opinion TM.
They deter early level tower dives from champions that shove waves hard to get their lvl 2-3 power spikes.
Can't give it to you. Tower dives at level 1 are a thing.

Deter, not prevent. Tower's shouldn't be an all encompassing defense against all retaliation, otherwise we'd end up in season 4. Towers deter early game champs, Riven, Renekton, etc, from diving you. A level one tower dive means that either the player that got dived misplayed or the enemy team/jg was more coordinated in their engage.

It also means the deterrent didn't work. Besides, the deterrence was an aggression. Tower made an offensive action from a static position.
Elimination of danger is slightly different than protection from danger.
“The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy.” -Sun Tzu The Art of War
If an allied champion gets lightly touched by an enemy player, then he gets turret aggro. That's about it. Mind you, if said enemy gets one-shot by a champion during a dive, then odds are the tower will just tickle the enemy to death.
