Hey everyone,

I'm Riot Opeli, Narrative Designer on Gnar. He's a pretty neat guy. If you’re curious to know how we went about creating Gnar’s character and story, ask us here!

  • So at what point did the "Become a literal titan of death" gene get bred out of yordles, because that seems like something most species would want to keep.

  • What specifically attacked Gnar's family? It looks like Vel'koz but that would mean Vel has been around for far, FAR longer than we ever thought.

  • How intelligent would you say Gnar is? We talking toddler? Secretly super smart? Borderline deficiency?

  • Why is Gnar in the League specifically?

Aww, Opeli, you're a really good sport for reading all of that glorious wall of text <3 (except the fact you seem to have intentionally not read the last tidbit about Tumblr, but I'll let it slide since you're a busy fellow)

I have another question for you, which is in no way related to Gnar - but more to your art of writing and developing new ideas and stories through the mastery of words.

  • Are you surprised to find so many people genuinely interested in the lore?
  • Do you think Riot will ever give their game's lore a bit more thorough attention sometime in the distant yet foreseeable future, or would the company's priority lie to pumping out awesome content that ultimately has very very little credibility tying it all together?
  • What exactly happened to the Institute of War/ League of Legends as a self-standing organization? We understand that you are trying to step away from using it as a plot device/deus ex machina, but with the latest 20 champions you practically give the impression that the League just doesn't exist anymore. Will we summoners ever get some love, with our purple-hooded, blue-glowy spheres??
  • What does it take to become a writer at Riot, exactly?

I have a couple questions about my favorite yordle:

  • Who would be Gnar’s friends in a cold, unforgiving future?

  • Does Gnar realize he transforms into a vicious beast, or is he unaware? Does that affect his actions?

  • Does Gnar retain his personality in best form?

  • Speaking of which, Gnar is more of a defender? It looks like he was protecting his family.

  • Does Gnar get sad when he remembers the past, or does he have something like amnesia?

How did Gnar end up fighting in the League? Also, him being encased in ice led me to think about Lissandra for some reason ("So many secrets buried in ice"): does he know her?

Excellent, multiple threads means I can ask all of my questions in places where they might get answered. Here are a few lore questions about Gnar:

  • Can I assume the Rage Gene was recessive? Only Gnar Hulked out and fought against the thing that presumably killed his family/tribe.
  • Who would be most likely to befriend Gnar? My guess is Annie.
  • According to the reveal, Gnar was "born millennia ago." Does this make him the oldest living champion?
  • On the Fields of Justice, Mega Gnar doesn't stop being mad unless he's tired (or dead). Off of the Fields of Justice, is it possible to calm down Mega Gnar before he tires himself out? Who (or what) is most likely to be able to do it?

As an aside, I really like the way Gnar's lore was presented. I feel like these less-conventional stories are a great way to introduce champions.

What was the inspiration for Dino Gnar? It's a really funny skin and reminds me of a child in a costume.

I measured Gnar at 2 ft 26lbs(normal gnar) and 28 ft tall by 16 ft broad, 3 tons (mega gnar). Do you find this accurate? How much of Gnar is based on Rioter's pets.

Whenever people refer to a missing link, I imagine it's a parse between two species. So, Gnar is the missing link between yordles and what exactly?

Is that Vel'Koz in Gnar's teaser? How did he get there, what did he do, and how old is Vel'Koz truly?

If not, what exactly attacked their family?

Also, what are the names of his family members?

  1. Does Gnar know that he transforms?
  2. If so, is he conscious while in beast form? Or does he just black out and have no idea what just happened when he reverts back to Mini-Gnar?

Edit: More questions.

  1. Most people assume that Gnar's lore is told from the point of view of Rengar. Does this mean that Gnar and Rengar are "enemies" or is the person from Gnar's lore someone else? (possibly Rengar's master?)
  2. What do you like most about Gnar?

We saw in the teaser that what looked to be his parents being killed, or at least pushed aside, by the strange creature/being that attacked his family. However, we see his siblings hiding over in a corner while Gnar be's the man and tries to defend his family. Does this mean his siblings could be in the same situation as he was, frozen in true ice?

First up,

  • Does Gnar consider himself a friend of Rengar, despite the lore? Rengar seemed happy to see the little Yordle, despite it's annoyance to him. When he went Mega-Gnar on Rengar, was he mad about Rengar trying to tell him to bugger off, or was throwing his boomerang the last straw?

  • Really, we all want to know, why Gnar? Which brilliant mind envisioned the little Yordle?

  • Well, he and Rengar are clearly not on the best of terms, does that mean Gnar doesn't like Kha'Zix?

So i have a few questions.......

  1. WHY NO CUBONE SKIN!

  2. needs a Stitch skin, when?

  3. What was the hardest part of Gnar to design and why?

  4. Was Gnar ever completely different than what we have now? Was he always caveman yordle?

  5. Were all of Gnars abilities his own or where they inspired by abilities that you had from canceled champions or just some you had on the back burner?
