RE: Stop reworking all the Champions!
NOTICE: I'm a smurf who has been playing since Worlds 2013, and got to Level 30 January 2014. I really shouldn't be talking about design philosophy as I'm just a shitty high school student who can't get past silver 3. However, I'm going to anyways since this in particular bothered me and I have time until Overwatch is done installing.
I'm not even going to refer to the story in future of the OP since I just don't like it. It's a bad analogy on how the evolution of running online games work. You can't compare getting a cat, then after it dies, a rabbit. Rather, it feels like going from owning a Corgi to a mixed Corgi. It looks and feels like your old Corgi, but it's not exactly the same since the seller mixed a Dalmatian with your old pal's kin. Examples include Kassadin, Gragas, Mordekaiser, Zyra, Darius, and Fizz. However, in some cases it's like getting a new breed of a dog, let's use a Golden Retriever. It's a dog nonetheless, but it's a lot different than your Corgi. Examples of this could be seen as of Poppy, Sion, and Taric.
Now that that's over, I want to explain why the game changing quite the way it does when it reworks Champions. The reason for this is simple: League can't handle being the same game as it was back in Seasons Zero, One, Two, Three, and in the future even Four. We are in Season Six, which in all opinion I'm not that big a fan of with all this really troll spoon-feeding of information like with Enemy Jungle Timers but at the same time taking it away at the same time as seen when Sight Wards were removed. Though that's not what the post is about. We're in a season where Samsung won Worlds a year and a half ago. Back then, the game literally had a different story plot. Some Champions of Institute League do not and should not exist at the moment. That's a reason why visual updates are a thing: to bring the Champions of the past a new coat of paint while still attaining what they were. A great example of this is Twitch. Twitch really didn't have much wrong with him other than he was ugly and didn't fit in with post-Institute League. He still doesn't really have a place in the Lore and the team sure as FUCK needs to look at the two industrial state of Runeterra, but it set the ground for what he is now.
Some Champions however, are just UGLY. They were hideous, had horrible lines and/or actor voice them, and had horrible animations. One example I will always use for this category is Tristana. Holy balls, did she walk bad. Holy balls, did she have bad lines. Holy balls, was she stale to play because of this. Trist has always been boring to play for me, but it did get better when she was updated. She stayed 100% point-and-click, but managed to be a lot more enjoyable to play because of her new Explosive Charge. Focusing around a target with a sticky grenade is a lot more fun to me than clicking someone and they take DoT damage and nothing else. Overall, she and the complete overhauls became a lot more fun to play and play against(Except Gangplank. Fuck enemy Gangplanks.).
Other Champions, however, were just not fun to play against or were fucking balls-to-the-wall hard to balance. Some examples include Fizz, Fiora, and Gragas. These Champions needed reworks. Fiora because she got a bunch of stats and 1v5 mode, Fizz because Riot wanted to keep his Trollpole but get rid of his ability to 100-to-0 someone and Gragas...well he was Gragas.
