Baron Pit/Dragon Pit Question

I was talking about this with one of my friends, and now we are both curious.

"Why is Baron Pit and Dragon Pit not in the center of the river with entrances from both sides of the map? Wouldn't that be more fair?"

I feel that Blue side has a better chance to Engage and Disengage Baron, and vise-versa is true for Dragon, but the buffs each provide dont necessarily equate in terms of power.

Where do you put mid lane?
How can you have Dragon and Baron/Rift spawned at the same time if they're in the same place?
What happens to the Rift Scuttlers?
