So, uh, do all supports still *need a sightstone? How soon to build it and when.

Hey there, Onwodori here.

I used to be a support main and find myself gravitating back to it every once in awhile. - particularly because I feel 60% of other support players rush Needlessly Large Rods and steal kills and farm.

Lux Ahem.

Anyways, the question I am stuck with is 'Does a support *always need to build a sight stone' but now too it is actually:

Do they *need a sightstone in their kit already belies having wards and visions built in + their trinket and

How long, if it is a necessity, can you delay a sightstone?

I'm one of those weirdos that loves to play Gangplank as a support - he was arguably much better in his last incarnation with lower cooldowns across the board and an AOE attack and movement speed buff, which gave him flat free AD as well, making him the one AD support. Now he has a variable but large AOE slow that reaches 80%~ and wards with said barrels.

So with someone like GP support, as odd as it is - is it more helpful to rush items that make you relevant, like a item 3302 item 3057 into an item 3025 and then perhaps more items that make you strong as an individual or can you max CDR asap and forgo the sightstone?

Obviously in the lower tiers it matters a lot less but, eh.

I'm ok with upgrading your support item first back instead of sightstone, but you should probably still try to get it second back. If the jungler is hitting 6 before you have a sightstone, you're going to be a prime target for ganks.

I would also suggest that 'supports' that need items to be relevant are not good supports.

Get it after your tier 2 gold item, or before you leave lane for any given reason (roaming counts). The only time you don't have to rush it is when you constantly pushed to your tower, which does happen in a long while.

Never leave lane without a Sightstone, and never skip or delay building vision.

I usually will always get it on my first back Unless I am playing a support (or mage/kill lane) that plans on getting item 3070 Or if my champion is pretty mana hungry and I need to get item 3028 first. Both of which is only 750-800g so in most cases people wouldn't mind if I get one of them first and then sight stone.

Well, if you're talking to an ADC Main, it's first item, first back, any less and you are trolling.

Not really.

For example, it could help me more when we are being pushed in and you are a Relic Shield user for more Relic procs to assist in farming under tower.

haha i was just trying to joke bitterly :)

Always get sightstone as soon as possible. If you can keep everything warded all day long without sightstone then you could do it even harder with sightstone.

If you want to delay sightstone for some strategic reason that is edgy and awkward but not always a bad idea. But there is no "not building sightstone"

If you are going to permanently delay sightstone, because you cannot simply not build sightstone unless you're an asshole who deserves to lose, then you should inform your team of this. Like stop worrying about who's mia

Aha see this is effectively what makes me enjoy the GP support. If I can buy my starting support item of choice, cause all 3 work for GP in certain situations, and then go straight into a sheen for my second back, the poke in lane is terrifying. After that I usually get sightstone and boots.

Youre not officially "not an asshole" until you get your sightstone lol

I usually get sightstone after I have the tier 2 support item, the tier 2 boots, and one advance item (tier two) i get two advance items if I'm ahead. Any sooner and I could lose trades and longer and I risk low vision.

So you hardly ward for the first 15 minutes and when you do they don't last long. Awesome, but hey you got boots so you can wave at your ADC as he lays dying!

Who said I hardly ward? I end up most of my games with an average of one ward every minute and a half (a 30 min game I put 20 wards). You gotta remember that active warding early game is the jungler responsibility and early game you are static on bot and you actually only have to cover 3 points for ganks. You have access to 2 pinks and up to 4 active trinkets and that is enough vision to cover the tiny section of the map where you spend 90% of the time on the lanning phase. The sigh stone helps with moving vision when I need to set up an specific objective or I need to seige a turret., take it and then move on to the very next objective.

Boots are much more handy on the 2v2 than the extra 150 hp. I get to have more mobility to dodge or to put pressure and zone the enemy out of the wave. But sure I'll spend all my resources on an item that won't help me directly and I could easily replace on the first 10 minutes of the game by just managing my trinket and ask my adc to use his (that I'm sure he gets anyway since it gets auto purchased)

if i have 800 gold, i get it right away. if not, upgrade support item :)

The main reason why you want to pick up a sight stone asap is so you can ward the river and dragon effectively especially since some junglers can bypass vision in the bushes using stealth. If you don't buy a sight stone on the first back then at least buy a control ward to deny the enemy vision, a potion and whatever portion of a support item you're going to get.

I'd say it depends on the type of lanes and jungler.

I'd say delaying sightstone while you build your second gold item and some small item you need to help you win your lane is fine, but you should still be getting it before you get any fully finished item.

Personally, I tend to go item 3098 > item 3070 > item 2049 when I'm playing enchanter supports, because being able to cast more spells is usually more useful than more vision in the early laning phase.

The reasoning behind this is that those items are more useful the earlier you get them - Frostfang gives you more gold the entire game, and tear starts stacking earlier. If you are a support who doesn't need that kind of scaling item, I'd recommend tier 2 gold item and then rushing Sighstone.
