I always do fairly well, when I play garen. I have over 1 million mastery on him, and super comfortable with his kit. I usually can crush all my counters and rarely lose the laning phase.(silver elo) I also LOVE to learn new strategies and builds for him, and my other mains. I recently played against two aatrox top lanes. I crushed the first one, and a few games later, got destroyed for the first time in months. I've NEVER been beaten like that, while on garen. It humbled me quite a lot. So, my question is this. How do I deal with aatrox in the Top Lane? The aatrox I lost to, was a diamond smurf(or so he says) It definately seemed like it. Long story short, my jungle tried to gank while I wasn't in lane, and gave him first blood. After that, he snowballed into a monster! He 1v1 killed me under tower 4 or 5 times, while my jungle never returned the whole laning phase. After laning phase he ran through our team and destroyed us. I could have solo killed his entire team, but couldn't even THINK about killing him. Please give me advice on how to deal with him as Garen in lane, and maybe a good build? FYI Grievous wounds DID NOT stop him from healing a CRAZY amount, all game. It also seemed like building armor did nothing as well.(tabi boots and thornmail, finally deadmans plate towards the end) Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks. I linked my profile, so maybe you can see how I do on garen, what i'm building, and so forth. Thanks in advance community!

EDIT: I could just permaban him, but I've been banning tahm kench, due to him being wayyyy op right now.

In seasons 1-5 if you got countered you could play around it. Just.

In seasons 6-9 if you get countered you may as well afk under tower and get 1/10 minion farm.

Aatrox hard counters Garen. You can have more health. Armour and one combo will chunk you for 80%.

Lol isn't a game of skill anymore it's a stat check joke.

To answer your question dodge. Everytime. Even the world's best Garens don't beat Aatrox. They just climb high enough that junglers know counters and gank early before they're fed. Riste just sits under his tower Vs Aatrox and in low elo that's a death penalty because junglers are r%%%%%ed. In high elo........it's time to gank and get fed because Aatrox has a choice....push and feed.....or let Garen farm up and risk losing as he scales.

In low elo Aatrox can just push and not have to worry because junglers are dumb.

So....yeah....dodge. How do you think half these high elo people get high? They premade or dodge. Once you get high enough it's rarer to get useless junglers.

Same reason LCS players don't go ham. One overextend gets exploited.

And yet in low elo you play safe the MMR system doesn't consider you a carry so punishes you with worse team mates.

Shitty system all round. In a more balanced system id say sit under tower farm and wait for a gank. But that won't happen in your elo. Trust me.

Sorry for you. The more you play Garen into Aatrox the more your MMR will suffer.

....

Thanks Meddler.

My advice is to watch the video on YouTube about the Master tier Garen and emulate what he does.

Run into his first q, aa, q auto cancel for silence. He can’t hit his second q now.

Pop your w on his third q. Spin to win run him down, ult. Collect 300 gold.

Aatrox is actually a pretty easy matchup for me atleast.

This isn't really directly related to your question about how to deal with Aatrox, it's a hard matchup and all that, but one thing I'd suggest is trying out trinity force on Garen. Unless the enemy team has multiple people who are going to be getting a lot of armor, I feel like trinity force is a better buy than black cleaver. It's also more fun in my opinion.

About Aatrox though, it's a matchup where, like others have said, you really just want to try to stay safe and farm. I haven't played much against the new Aatrox as Garen so I don't really have much advice, but before his major changes the biggest issue I had with him was all his sustain.
