Do placements even matter?
They seem like just a waste of time and it actually makes sense to just dodge them and then start climbing. Because you can't really rank up during placements anyway.

They really are a waste of time in my opinion
It has more to do with MMR than ladder rankings.
Think of it... like an evaluation for future progress, like an aptitude test.
dodging placements doesn't make them a loss, afaik not even a hidden loss
you just have the time penalty and that's all
Dodges don't count as losses in placements (in contrast with promo series, where dodges are losses in series and also deduct LP), so you need to play your 10 matches regardless.
Placement matches are pretty significant though, despite what jaded people might feel like after getting placed B5. The impact on your MMR is the main and most important thing. Someone who was say, bronze 4 end of last season will almost certainly get placed bronze 5 no matter how they do in placements, and so people go "Ha, see, they don't matter!", but the person in that situation who goes 10-0 in placements will be getting like 25 LP for a win and losing 15 for a loss and so will quickly be able to climb out of B5, while the person who went 0-10 will be more like 15 LP for a win and -25 for losses and have a rough time climbing out.
