Riot please don't keep the Poppy E+Q interaction

Riot is adding a QoL of change with how Poppy 's Q (hammer smash) interacts with her E (dash). It automatically aims the Q on the E target shortly after casting E. Usually you would want this as it can be a bit challenging to aim the Q in the split-second after dashing. However, it can sometimes be beneficial to dash to an alternate target (usually a minion) to get next to the target without pushing them with you (as seen in Poppy's new champ spotlight video) and then casting the Q sideways or backwards to engage on an enemy. If Riot's change stays you will have to wait a bit after dashing to cast the Q in a different direction.

This could possibly be fixed by allowing the Q to be cast in a different direction if it's >45 degrees off from the E target. Or allow the Q to be targeted in any direction if the E is used on a minion (though I will sometimes E to one champ to get next to another). I have about 50 games on the new Poppy and I have tested the new change on the PBE.

tl;dr: Please rethink always auto-targeting the Poppy's Q after she uses her E.

I made a similar thread about this issue as it also handicaps you wild trying to e q the jungle camps to get the stun and AOE damage onto the camps.

Making her e prioritise champions when there is a minion very close to them would benefit Poppy a lot more then these changes.

It could trigger only if you e a champ

How big of a delay are we talking about here? I find that most of the time I don't want to immediately Q after E due to the delay on my Sheen item. If the delay to get free targeting back is less then the time to get another Sheen boost then I don't really have a big problem with it I guess.

It is like .25-.5 sec. Pretty much right away. It'll be done by the time you auto

Oh... Then I don't really see the problem. XD

It's just a little something we'll have to get used to, eventually it'll turn out to be I good thing I reckon.

Thanks for the heads-up, and the response.

it might be a problem if you tryng tm E the tank in a team fight and Qing their adc or carry. it can be a big problem because i do that a lot.

Yeah, also I often E to a minion so I can Q+passive for a surprise killing blow in lane.

Hope they at least fixed the flash bug on Q. The delay is probably ok if it's a short enough window but I'd also prefere to remove it. Taking options away in trade of a bit easier usage of an ability seems wrong. I usually prefere a higher ceiling

absolutely 100% this thread.

I dont understand why riot did this. There were plenty of ways to fix her E-Q interaction, but this....

So not cool.

Yeah and the nerf posts... god help me if this is a poppy nerf lol. Meanwhile riven buffs every patch lol. W.. T... F

WAIt is this good or bad for poppy?

Raven Redeemed2 votes

It's good if you want to follow up on the target you dashing to, (most of the time), it's bad if you gap close by dashing to a target close to the champ so you can use Q without pushing the enemy (some times). Does that make sense? It's a little hard to picture I know.

It's actually only triggering if you press both at the same time.

Raven Redeemed1 votes

Oh Really? Like when you are in the middle of the dash, then the Q is cast after?

Why do I feel this is a nerf and less of a help?

This is only nerf in every case imho. Q used to hit target no matter where you throw it after hitting enemy against wall with E. Now, if there is no walls, it's not possible to land second hit from Q if you want to slow your enemy immediately after E.

Chipping in to say that my first game with Poppy since this change showed it to be more annoying than helpful. Lining up Q wasn't much of a problem before unless there was serious lag (which isn't a problem with the champion and affects any Champ's combos). To be honest, if there IS lag, the loss of control issue is even bigger, because you'll have a harder time timing/delaying your combo to avoid it.

Thankfully, said window for this auto-target malarkey is pretty short, so it's not messing with me constantly.... But I can't think of a situation it's helping me in, while I've already seen a few it's hurt me in.

1: Minion-charging to land a Q. Broken. -The auto-aim forces a miss unless you delay your Q, in which case they have more time to respond. It also almost killed me when I W'd a minion to escape and pressed my Q behind me to deter the enemy chase. Instead, it fired uselessly forward into the minion. Before, they'd be slowed down and be forced to eat the double-proc if they commited to the chase. Sure, I can delay the Q, but when I'm RUNNING from a fight, I do not want that delay on the Q's slow. 2: Jungling, futzes with it. -Have to delay E or Q going in to avoid catching only one target. Before I'd often charge in for the stun and instantly Q into the side monsters. The delay to avoid this now isn't as critical as against players (where every fraction of a second counts), but it IS obnoxious. 3: Teamfights, severely futzed. -Against players, especially once the laning phase is over, every fraction of a second counts. Delaying your Q after a critical stun even a hair can make a big difference in a fight. And you have no choice but to do this if you want to aim the aoe into anything but a wall. And if you're a little too fast? You get punished.

TL,DR: This change has almost no benefit and punishes you with a loss of control if you have good reaction times/reflexes. And, mentally, knowing you have to hold back to avoid your combo misfiring... it's frustrating. It takes away that sense of satisfaction for quick and precise combos. And it adds that mental block of "what if I click too fast?"
