As a Pantheon player, Pantheon needs a rework

I currently have more mastery points on Pantheon than any other champion in this game, and I love his design, but he could use a bit of an update. His kit is just too uninteractive (especially for his enemies) for it to be fun for a lot of players, and even though many Pantheon players such as myself enjoy him as is, I think it would be more enjoyable if his kit had more potential ways to interact with your enemy laner and the enemy had more ways to actually beat the pantheon. As is, there are only 5 real strategies for surviving against a pantheon in lane unless your jungler camps him.

  1. Play super passively so he can't kill you and snowball.
  2. Stack a shitton of armor.
  3. Pick someone with strong engage and trading in lane like riven or renekton, engage on him when he comes too close, as long as you have basic trading knowledge on your champion and interrupt his E with your hard CC you should be able to win the trade.
  4. Pick someone with a ton of sustain and/or tankiness and try to stay alive longer than he can sustain his mana.
  5. Pick someone who has a strong late game and do steps 1 and 2 to outscale him.

That's basically it, most of these "beating pantheon" strategies really just turn the lane into either a skill matchup or an infinite loss of cs for whoever is laning against him at the expense of not dying. This is too little counterplay, because many of the weaknesses of his kit are not realistically abusable by his enemy laner in low elo, but are what make him rarely found in very high elo.

Weaknesses like having an early game champion who is weak to early ganks, or having an AD caster who runs out of mana quite quickly, or being completely screwed if you mess up in laning phase, or having your engage and your escape on the same spell that has a high cooldown, these all prevent him from being popular in higher elos, but are not commonly abusable by people in lower elos. You generally need to outplay the Pantheon to exploit these weaknesses without using a completely universal strategy, and because Pantheon as a champion has very little outplay potential himself, he can't make a comback against people who can beat him (usually in higher elos). Many people don't know of all the strategies to beat him, especially number 3, so laning vs a pantheon is nightmarish.

To be honest, I'm not really sure what riot can do to make him more viable in higher elos while also giving him realistically abusable counterplay in lower ones and giving him more general interactivity, I'm not a designer, but I think that changes that do these things should be put in place. For the record, I'm not saying he should get a complete kit overhaul like poppy or sion, but something like the Katarina rework would be beneficial to his kit, in my opinion. The skills that I, as a pantheon player would not touch are his passive, W, and ultimate, as these are the parts of his kit that provide the most depth.

According to a post made by Reav3, Pantheon is on the Tier 1 list for a full VGU. Not sure when it will happen, but Riot does consider him to be a priority at the moment.
